CANADA WEST SHORT TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS Mar 17-18, 2018 Abbotsford, B.C. The Canada West Short Track Championships are intended to be the focal point of athlete preparation for skaters in the Training to Train stage of development. These Championships provide meaningful, high profile and developmentally appropriate end of season events which are a source of motivation and an opportunity for recognition of the best developing skaters in Canada. These events will serve as a primary introduction to national competitions where skaters represent their Branch. As these Championships are the first opportunity for young skaters to participate in national level competition, it is important that it be a positive experience. Many parents may be wondering what the standard of skating is. Using the past 4 years of skating times the CDC has compiled the average winning times and 12th placed times from Canada West and Canada East championships. This table can be used as a guide in managing participation decisions and performance expectations. 400m (1st) 400m (12th) 1500m (1st) 1500m (12th) 11F F F F M M M M Ages Male Female receive at least one extra position in each category, sometimes more. Entries Alberta will be allowed a minimum of 3 spots per category with a possibility of more depending on other Branches not filling their quotas. Alberta will be notified as early as possible regarding extra positions available (usually 2 weeks prior to event). We often Although we will not have our final AB ranking done until March 4 th, if any skaters wish to be considered for entry if they should qualify, they should notify their club or AASSA office before Feb 23 rd. Those skaters who have qualified a spot based on final ranking from the two AB qualifying events, are to send in the registration forms to AASSA before March 6 th 2018.

Alberta Selection for Canada West Alberta skaters will be selected for the Canada West spots based on ranking points among their age class, earned from any 3 of the 4 following distances: 200m, 400m, 1500m and 3000m, skated in either the Alberta T2T SD Championships in Edmonton on Nov 10-12, 2017 or at RUFast in Calgary on Mar 3-4, Note that skaters will be grouped in open T2T age divisions but ranked in their separate single year ages for Can West Qualifying. Ranking in each distance is as follows: 200m and 400m: From their best times from any 200m or 400m skated at Edmonton on Nov 10-12, 2017 or in Calgary at RUFast on Mar 3-4, Both events will run the 200m as mass start (no pursuits). 3000m: From their best rank in their age by placement in the finals in the 3000m from either Edmonton or RUFast. 3000m finals will be run as points races. Although skaters of the same age will likely be spread across different divisions they will be ranked by single year age for Can West qualifying (Skaters of the same age who are in the same final will be ranked according to their place in that final. Skaters of the same age category but in different finals will be ranked so that the skater in the higher final will be ranked ahead of any skater in the lower finals). Please note that at Canada West T2T Championships in Abbotsford on Mar 17-18, the younger two T2T divisions will only be racing a 2000m points race. However, at the two Alberta selection events, the 3000m will be used for all T2T skaters that are to be ranked for Canada West selection. This allows us to mix T2T ages for better quality, more competitive racing. Those T2T who choose not to race a 3000m at the two AB events will not be eligible to earn points in that distance. 1500m From their best rank by placement among their age in the 1500m from either Edmonton or RUFast. Like in the 3000m, skaters will be seeded into open T2T divisions for better quality racing but ranked in single year age categories for Can West qualifying. T2T skaters who do not wish to race in a 3000m will have another shorter distance option at both competitions. However, only the results from 3 of the 4 distances above will count towards Can West qualifying. The ranking points earned from the skater s best 3 distances will be added to determine their overall ranking in their age category for qualification on the Alberta Team into Canada West 2017 in Saskatoon. The ranking points given for each distance are as follows: Rank Points Rank Points Rank Points

The order of racing for T2T s in the two Alberta Qualifying events will be*: Saturday: 1500m heats/finals 200m heats/ finals Sunday: 400m Heats 400m finals 3000m finals *(order of racing, division sizes and round qualifying format may change and/or will be finalized by the organizers/sdc and will depend on length of the schedule and ice availability). Relays may be run during the qualifying events if there is time to do so in the schedule. For more information on Canada West T2T Championships please see the SSC Competitions Bulletin on the SSC website (also available on the AASSA website). Funding and Support: For , entry fees for Can West will be the responsibility of each skater. All skaters representing Alberta will be eligible to use an Alberta short track suit (most of the AB suits do not have built in cut resistant protection and require a dyneema or Kevlar undergarment, or another suit with protection, to be worn underneath). Please note that this competition requires the use of cut resistant protection meeting ISU standards (see SSC regulation D3). AASSA will fund/send a minimum of 2 coaches and 1 manager. Each branch (Provincial organization) is allowed to send 4 coaches and a manager. Coaches must be certified at Intro to Comp, Comp Dev or level 4/5 to have access to the coaches box. Coaches who have in training or trained status at Intro to Comp or higher may be permitted in the coaches box as a certified coach as part of their professional development if they are accompanied by a coach with qualified certification. Clubs and coaches will be asked to apply for the position(s) of AASSA coaches/managers. If AASSA does not send the full 4 coaches any clubs who wish to send their own coach at their expense can apply to AASSA to fill the additional coaching positions. The SDC will select which additional club coaches will be given AB coaching accreditation. Coaches and managers are chosen based on several factors including: experience/certification (especially for manager and head coach), number of skaters going from their club, providing opportunity to new coaches who haven t been to Can West (for assistant coaches), and availability to attend the Friday AB training ice. [ CACLT 2018 information is on the following pages ]

CANADIAN AGE CLASS LONG TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS (CACLT) Feb 10-11, 2018, Québec City, QC The Canadian Age Class Long Track Championships (CACLT) is intended to be the focal point of athlete preparation for skaters in the Training to Train stage of development. The Age Class Championships provide a meaningful, high profile and developmentally appropriate event which is a source of motivation and opportunity for recognition of the best developing long track skaters in Canada. This event will serve as a primary introduction to national competitions where skaters represent their Branch in competition. Alberta is guaranteed 2 skaters per category with the opportunity to send more skaters if other Provinces do not fill their quotas. (eg. 2 boys each in T2T 12, T2T 13, T2T 14, T2T 15 and 2 girls each in T2T 11, T2T 12, T2T 13, T2T 14). Note that this year CACLT is only a T2T competition, with no open Olympic Style division for older skaters. Alberta Selection for Canadian Age Class Long Track Alberta skaters will qualify a spot at CACLT in the T2T categories at the Red Deer Long Track in Red Deer on January 20-21, To provide better racing, T2T skaters will be grouped into 2 year age categories for mass start events at the Red Deer LT event although will be qualifying for single year age categories that are run at CACLT in Quebec. At the Red Deer LT, T2T skaters will skate in and qualify for CACLT in the same events that are run at CACLT and will be ranked by their final points accumulated over the T2T events in their T2T age category. In the event that poor weather does not allow for a full competition at Red Deer, the races that are run will be used to determine the ranking as long as at least two individual events/distances are run. If finals are not able to run then times from heats will be used for final ranking. If less than two distances are run in Red Deer than times from the LT event in Calgary the week before will be used for ranking for CACLT qualifying. Only the distances not run in Red Deer would be used for ranking from Calgary. CACLT Program/Events: (The program shall include the following events) Division Day 1 Day2 Girls 11, Boys 12 3 Lap Team Pursuit Mass Start 1500m Super Final Girls 12, Boys 13 Girls 13, Boys 14 Girls 14, Boys 15 3 Lap Team Pursuit 5 Lap Team Pursuit 5 Lap Team Pursuit Mass Start 1500m Super Final Olympic Style 1500m Olympic Style 1500m

Funding and support: For , entry fees for CACLT will be the responsibility of each skater and are sent and payable to AASSA. All skaters representing Alberta will be eligible to use an Alberta long or short track suit (most of the AB ST suits do not have full built in cut resistant protection but only shin protection). Required equipment for Mass Start races at this competition shall conform to Rule D3-300/D3-301 Long Track Mass Start Competition. Required equipment for Olympic Style races at this competition shall conform to Rule D3-200 Long Track Olympic Style Training and Competition. The Team Pursuit is considered an Olympic style event. The Dave Thompson Memorial Race safety equipment requirements shall conform to Rule D3-300/D Please note that all skaters, including those aged 15 and over will be required to wear a helmet as per D Section D3 Safety skater equipment can be found on the AASSA website under Skaters - resources. AASSA will fund/send a minimum of 2 coaches. Each branch (Province) is allowed to send up to 4 coaches and a manager. If AASSA does not send the full 4 coaches any clubs who wish to send their own coach at their expense can apply to AASSA to fill the additional coaching positions.
