All entrants must be members in good standing of clubs having membership in U.S. Figure Skating or be an individual member of U.S. Figure Skating. Test requirements are as of March 15, 2015 [the USFS deadline for Solo Dance Series registration] and/or when the skater submits their registration to be a solo dance series participant, whichever date is earliest. Entries received February 24 March 2, 2015 will be accepted solely at the discretion of the LOC and will require an additional late fee of $40 per event. All participants must have previously registered with U.S. Figure Skating and paid the required fee to participate in the Solo Dance Series. Your registration number is required to enter this competition as a Series participant and accrue points. 3 Liability: U.S. Figure Skating, the Skating Club of Morris, the William G. Mennen Sports Arena and Morris County Park Commission accept no responsibility for injury or damage sustained by any participant in these championships. The athlete and parent or guardian, agree to sign the US Figure Skating Waiver at registration. Limitations: We may not be able to accommodate all entries. If limits must be placed on any event, entries will be based on the entry date. Anyone closed out of an event will be notified and the applicable portion of the fee returned. Under no other circumstances will a refund be given. This includes: conflicting family activities, injuries, illness or deaths in the family (USFS# 3047 Once entries have closed, entry fees are only refundable if the competition is not held). Should there be only one applicant for any category, the event may be cancelled and the skater will receive a refund for the cancelled event (USFS# 3045). If, on the day of competition, only one skater shows for an event, the event may be cancelled and the skater will receive a refund for that event. *Request for changes of event/level: No changes to the schedule will be allowed to accommodate personal or family conflicts. Any requests for event/level changes, (not due to an LOC error), after the entry has been received will be processed upon receipt of a $25.00 change fee. No changes will be made after the entries are sent to the chief referee. Schedules: Schedules will be available approximately 7 days prior to the start of the competition and will be posted on the Skating Club of Morris website: Please do not send a self addressed stamped envelope. All information will be posted on the website. Please note that the schedule is prepared by the Referee after the close of entries and is based strictly on the number of events and competitors and the availability of judges. Awards: Medals will be awarded to 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd and 4 th place winners in all events. Facility: The ice surface at Mennen Arena measures 200 by 85. First aid facilities are available at the rink at all times. Practice Ice: Practice ice may be available and will be announced on the website after the close of entries. Registration: The registration desk will open one hour before the first event. Competitors are advised to be in the arena and prepared to skate, at least one hour before their event in case the competition is running early. Coaches Information: All coaches must comply with U.S. Figure Skating Rule MR All coaches must check in at the registration desk upon arrival at the rink. The LOC will have a list of compliant coaches who are cleared for a credential at the competition. Upon checking in, coaches will have to show a photo ID to receive a credential. If a coach cannot provide a photo ID, and is not known to the LOC, and is not on the list or cannot produce the necessary documents, he or she will not be allowed a credential no exceptions. We strongly urge all coaches to have their cards with them. Please allow ample time to check in prior to your skater s event. Non-credentialed coaches will not be permitted in the designated coaching area at rink side during events, including practice sessions. Coaching at U.S. Figure Skating events without compliance is an ethics violation which is reported to U.S. Figure Skating and PSA. For more information regarding Coach Compliance, please refer to: Music: Music for the Pattern Dance events will be chosen from the Standardized music of the International Skating Union, per rule 6030, and will be provided by The Skating Club of Morris. Music for the Solo Combined Event Free Dance must be submitted on CDs and only one track per CD is allowed. CDs must be clearly marked with the skater s name, level, and length of program and submitted one (1) hour before the start of the skater s event. Music on CD-RW type CDs will not be accepted. No Ipods are allowed. The Skating Club of Morris assumes no responsibility or liability for damage or loss of CDs. All possible care will be taken; however all competitors MUST have an additional duplicate CD AT RINKSIDE. Judging: All Solo Dance Series Events will be judged under the 6.0 system. All dance events may be double paneled at the discretion of the referee. Ladies will skate the ladies steps and men will skate the men s steps, no exceptions. 2

4 Group Size: Preliminary through Pre-Silver Pattern dance groups will not consist or more than 10 skaters per group. If more than 10 skaters are entered in a solo pattern dance event at the preliminary through pre-silver levels, the skaters will be split as evenly as possibly into as many groups as are necessary to keep each group no larger than 10 skaters total. Silver through Gold Pattern dance groups will not consist of more than 18 skaters. If more than 18 skaters are entered into one level, the skaters will be split as evenly as possible into as many groups as are necessary to keep each group no larger than 18 skaters total. Combined Event and Short Dance Groups will not consist of more than 18 skaters. If more than 18 skaters are entered into one level, the skaters will be split as evenly as possibly into as many groups as are necessary to keep each group no larger than 18 skaters total. Sequences/Patterns: Athletes will perform the number of patterns in accordance to the Rules as described in the Figure Skating Rulebook. The number of sequences skated for Pattern Dance events will be based upon Rule In the initial or final round of all dance competitions the number of sequences of the dance to be danced shall be as follows: A. Two sequences: Swing Dance, European Waltz, American Waltz, Tango, Starlight Waltz, Westminster Waltz, Argentine Tango, Austrian Waltz, Cha Cha Congelado, Yankee Polka, Ravensburger Waltz, Tango Romantica, Silver Samba, Golden Waltz, Midnight Blues and Finnstep. B. Three sequences: Dutch Waltz, Canasta Tango, Rhythm Blues, Cha Cha, Fiesta Tango, Hickory Hoedown, Willow Waltz, Ten Fox, Blues, Paso Doble and Viennese Waltz. C. Four sequences: Fourteenstep, Foxtrot, Rocker Foxtrot, Quickstep and Rhumba. D. Six sequences: Kilian. All pattern dances should start on the judges side unless directed otherwise by the referee. Ties: In the event of a tie, FOR MEDAL PURPOSES ONLY, the second dance shall be the tiebreaker and the medal shall be awarded to the skater scoring highest on the second dance. FOR NATIONAL SOLO DANCE SERIES PURPOSES, ties in Factored Places (overall finish) in the solo pattern dance event will not be broken at the participating Series season competitions. In the case of a tie, skaters will share the available points. For example, if competitors are tied for first place following both pattern dances, the skaters will share the points for first and second place based upon the following process: To calculate their point earning in a group of five or more skaters, we will take the nine points for first place plus the eight points for second, add these numbers together; then divide by two so that each athlete would earn eight-and-one-half points (8.5 points) for their shared first place finish. 6 2015 U.S. Figure Skating Solo Dance Series Events The 2015 Morris Open, is a participating competition within the 2015 Solo Dance Series. The solo pattern dance event, solo combined event and shadow dance event are being offered as part of the 2015 U.S. Figure Skating Solo Dance Series and will be conducted in accordance with the 2015 Solo Dance Series Handbook. Please refer to the 2015 Solo Dance Series handbook, found at for the current Series rules, levels and event requirements that will be in effect for this competition. SOLO PATTERN DANCE EVENT The solo pattern dance event is comprised of two dances at each level. At this competition, this event is offered at the Preliminary, Pre-Bronze, Bronze, Pre-Silver, Silver, Pre-Gold, Gold and International levels. The solo pattern dance competitors will compete two dances at each level, with the result from both dances being combined to create a final, overall result. Points will be awarded based upon the skater s combined, overall placement of the two pattern dances. [Refer to the Awarding of Points section in the 2015 Solo Dance Series Handbook.] TEST LEVEL FOR SOLO PATTERN DANCE: All skaters must either compete at their test level or one level above of their highest completed dance test. The test level is determined by a skater completing all of the dance tests within that level. Participants may test during the Series season without penalty. The determination of level will be based upon test level as of the 2015 Series entry level deadline of March 15, 2015 and/or when the skater submits their registration to be a solo dance series participant, which ever date is earlier. Skaters may not change or move up levels in the 2015 Series once the deadline has passed and/or when they submit their registration to US Figure Skating. ** Test level may be either standard or solo dance. Adult dance, adult solo dance, master s dance and master s solo dance do not fulfill the testing requirements for this event. 7 SOLO COMBINED DANCE EVENT The combined dance event is comprised of the following: 1.) JUVENILE, INTERMEDIATE & NOVICE One solo pattern dance chosen by the referee out of two possible dances as selected by U.S. Figure Skating. The dance will not be posted until the starting order is posted at the competition JUNIOR & SENIOR A short dance and, 2.) A solo free dance The pattern dances competed in the Combined Dance event are separate from those in the solo Pattern Dance event and the results will not count towards the solo pattern dance event or results. This event is offered at Juvenile through Senior levels. Refer to the 2015 Solo Dance Series Complete Handbook found at for the complete, current event rules and details. JUVENILE COMBINED EVENT: Test qualifications as of March 15, 2015 and/or when the skater submits their registration to be a solo dance series participant, which ever date is earliest. Skaters must have passed the standard preliminary solo or standard preliminary partnered pattern dance test and/or the standard solo or partnered juvenile free dance. Skaters must not have passed any solo or partnered pattern dances higher than the complete bronze dance test and must not have passed any solo or partnered free dance test higher that the juvenile free dance. Pattern Dance Selection for Juvenile: Hickory Hoedown and Ten Fox One of the above dances will be drawn for each competition. The chosen dance will be posted on the starting order. It will not be published prior to the posting of the starting order. Free Dance Requirements for Juvenile: Juvenile Solo Free Dance :: 1:40 +/- 10 seconds MUSIC MUST HAVE AN AUDIBLE RHYTHMIC BEAT WITH THE EXCEPTION OF 10 SECONDS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE PROGRAM Music at this level is strongly suggested to be in the same rhythms as the U.S. Figure Skating test structure. Edge Elements Spin Step Sequence Twizzle Series Dance Stop One short edge element, but no more. The edge element held for a minimum of three seconds, but cannot exceed six seconds. One choreographic dance spin*, but no more. Minimum three revolutions on one foot. Spin combinations not permitted. One step sequence from the following list: circular, midline or diagonal. The step sequence must fully utilize the ice surface and should include a variety of steps and turns and must include three-turns and mohawks. Jumps of more than one-half rotation, stops, dance spins, pirouettes, pattern regressions and loops must not be included in any step sequence. One twizzle. Minimum one revolution. One full stop to express the character of the music, not to exceed five seconds. The stop must come at least 10 seconds after the start of the program and at least 10 seconds before the end of the program. * See Page 12 for definition. 6

8 INTERMEDIATE COMBINED EVENT: Test qualifications as of March 15, 2015 and/or when the skater submits their registration to be a solo dance series participant, which ever date is earliest. Skaters must have passed the standard bronze solo or standard bronze partnered pattern dance test and/or have passed the standard solo or partnered intermediate free dance test. Skaters must not have passed any solo or partnered pattern dances higher than the complete pre-silver dance test and no solo or partnered free dance test higher that the intermediate free dance. Pattern Dance Selection for Intermediate: European Waltz and Foxtrot One of the above dances will be drawn for each competition. The chosen dance will be posted on the starting order. It will not be published prior to the posting of the starting order. Free Dance Requirements for Intermediate: Intermediate Solo Free Dance :: 2:00 +/- 10 seconds MUSIC MUST HAVE AN AUDIBLE RHYTHMIC BEAT WITH THE EXCEPTION OF 10 SECONDS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE PROGRAM Music at this level is strongly suggested to be in the same rhythms as the U.S. Figure Skating test structure. 9 NOVICE COMBINED EVENT: Test qualifications as of March 15, 2015 and/or when the skater submits their registration to be a solo dance series participant, which ever date is earliest. Skaters must have passed at least one dance of the standard silver solo or standard silver partnered pattern dance test and/or have passed the standard solo or partnered novice free dance test. Skaters must not have passed any standard solo or partnered pattern dances higher than the complete pre-gold dance test and must not have passed any standard solo or partnered free dance tests higher that novice free dance. Pattern Dance Selection for Novice: Tango and Rocker Foxtrot One of the above dances will be drawn by the referee one week prior to each competition. The chosen dance will be made public when posted on the starting order. Free Dance Requirements for Novice: Novice Solo Free Dance :: 2:10 +/- 10 seconds MUSIC MUST HAVE AN AUDIBLE RHYTHMIC BEAT WITH THE EXCEPTION OF 10 SECONDS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE PROGRAM Music at this level is strongly suggested to be in the same rhythms as the U.S. Figure Skating test structure. Edge Elements Spin Step Sequence Twizzle Series Dance Stop One combination edge element each edge must be held for a minimum of 3 seconds, but the total element must not exceed 12 seconds. And one short edge element held for a minimum of three seconds, but not to exceed six seconds. No more than one combination and one short edge element permitted. 10 JUNIOR COMBINED EVENT: Test qualifications as of March 15, 2015 and/or when the skater submits their registration to be a solo dance series participant, which ever date is earliest. Skaters must have passed at least two dances of the standard pre-gold solo or standard pre-gold partnered pattern dance test and/or have passed the standard junior solo or partnered free dance test. Skaters must not have passed any solo or partnered pattern dances higher than the complete gold dance test and must not have passed any solo or partnered free dance tests higher than the junior free dance. Short Dance Requirements for Junior: Junior Solo Short Dance :: 2:00 +/- 10 seconds Music Requirements: Spanish Dance Rhythms MUSIC MUST HAVE AN AUDIBLE RHYTHMIC BEAT WITH THE EXCEPTION OF 10 SECONDS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE PROGRAM Edge Element One short edge element. Must be held for a minimum of three seconds, but no more than six seconds. Step Sequence Twizzles Pattern Dance Requirement One circular or midline step sequence. The step sequence must fully utilize the ice surface and should include a variety of steps and turns. Jumps of more than one-half rotation, stops, dance spins, pirouettes, pattern regressions and loops must not be included in any step sequence. Once set of sequential twizzles. Two twizzles skated one right after the other with up to one step in between twizzles. Maybe skated anywhere in the program except in the required step sequence. Only one step between twizzles is allowed. Two sequences of the Paso Doble skated separately. Step #1 of each sequence must be skated on a different side of the ice surface. Timing: The Pattern Dance Elements must be skated in strict time to the music with the start of the first step of each pattern dance element on beat 1 of a four measure musical phrase. A Pattern Dance Element not started on the required beat must be penalized by judges with the reduction of 0.5 off the second mark. The Pattern Dance Elements must be skated in accordance with the required tempo of the pattern dance Paso Doble, i.e. 56 measures of 112 beats per minute plus or minus 2 beats per minute. Additional Information Vocal music is permitted and only music with an audible rhythmic beat may be used. The music may be without an audible rhythmic beat for up to 10 seconds at the beginning of the program. The concept and choreography must produce the feeling of a unified dance. The Pattern Dance Elements may be skated anywhere in the Short Dance and should be integrated into the composition of the dance so that there should not be the feeling that there are just rhythms put together without thought of how they will fit together. After the clock is started with the first movement, the skater must not remain in one place for more than 10 seconds. During the program, either up to two full stops (duration must not exceed 5 seconds each) or up to one full stop (duration must not exceed 10 seconds) are permitted. The pattern must proceed in a generally constant direction and must not cross the long axis of the ice surface except once at each end of the rink (within no more than 20 meters from the barrier). Loops in either direction are permitted provided that they do not cross the long axis. Kneeling or sliding on two knees or sitting on the ice is not allowed and will be considered a fall. Touching the ice with hand(s) is not permitted. 9

11 Free Dance Requirements for Junior: Junior Solo Free Dance :: 2:30 +/- 10 seconds MUSIC MUST HAVE AN AUDIBLE RHYTHMIC BEAT WITH THE EXCEPTION OF 10 SECONDS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE PROGRAM Edge Elements Spin Step Sequence One combination edge element - each edge must be held for a minimum of 3 seconds, but the total element must not exceed 12 seconds. And two different short edge elements held for a minimum of three seconds, but not to exceed six seconds. No more than one combination and two short edge elements permitted. Edge elements should have different positions.^ One choreographic dance spin*, but no more. Minimum three revolutions on one foot. May chane feet. Two different step sequences, one selected from group A and one selected from Group B: Group A: Straight Line Step Sequences midline or diagonal Group B: Curved Step Sequences (counterclockwise or clockwise) circular or serpentine Twizzle Series Dance Stop The step sequence must fully utilize the ice surface and should include a variety of steps and turns and must include brackets, counters, rockers and choctaws. Jumps of more than one-half rotation, stops, dance spins, pirouettes, pattern regressions and loops must not be included in any step sequence. Two different twizzle series, but no more. One twizzle series must have a different entry edge and different direction for the two twizzles. For both series, a minimum two revolutions is required on each twizzle. No more than three steps are allowed between twizzles. 12 SENIOR COMBINED EVENT: Test qualifications as of March 15, 2015 and/or when the skater submits their registration to be a solo dance series participant, which ever date is earliest. Skaters must have passed the standard solo or standard partnered gold pattern dance test and/or have passed the standard senior solo or partnered free dance test. Short Dance Requirements for Senior: Senior Solo Short Dance Duration: 2:00 +/- 10 seconds Music Requirements: Samba and one or two of the following rhythms: Samba, Rhumba, ChaCha,Mambo, Merengue, Salsa MUSIC MUST HAVE AN AUDIBLE RHYTHMIC BEAT WITH THE EXCEPTION OF 10 SECONDS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE PROGRAM Edge Element One short edge element. Must be held for a minimum of three seconds, but no more than six seconds. Step Sequence One circular or midline step sequence. The step sequence must fully utilize the ice surface and should include a variety of steps and turns. Jumps of more than one-half rotation, stops, dance spins, pirouettes, patter regressions and loops must not be included in any step sequence. Twizzles Pattern Dance Requirement Additional Information Once set of sequential twizzles. Two twizzles skated one right after the other with up to one step in between twizzles. Maybe skated anywhere in the program except in the required step sequence. No more than 1 step between twizzles is allowed. Two sequences of the Silver Samba skated separately. Step #1 of each sequence must be skated on a different side of the ice surface. Timing: The Pattern Dance Elements must be skated in strict time to the music with the start of the first step of each pattern dance element on beat 1 of a four measure musical phrase. A Pattern Dance Element not started on the required be must be penalized by judges with the reduction of 0.5 off the second mark. The Pattern Dance Elements must be skated on the Samba Rhythm, in the style of the samba. The tempo of music throughout the Pattern Dance Elements must be constant and in accordance with the required tempo of the Pattern Dance Silver Samba, i. e. 54 measures of two beats or 108 beats per minute, plus or minus 2 beats per minute. The tempo of music throughout the Pattern Dance Elements must be consistent. Vocal music is permitted and only music with an audible rhythmic beat may be used. The music may be without an audible rhythmic beat for up to 10 seconds at the beginning of the program. The concept and choreography must produce the feeling of a unified dance. The Pattern Dance Elements may be skated anywhere in the Short Dance and should be integrated into the composition of the dance so that there should not be the feeling that there are just rhythms put together without thought of how they will fit together. After the clock is started with the first movement, the skater must not remain in one place for more than 10 seconds. During the program, either up to two full stops (duration must not exceed 5 seconds each) or up to one full stop (duration must not exceed 10 seconds) are permitted. The pattern must proceed in a generally constant direction and must not cross the long axis of the ice surface except once at each end of the rink (within no more than 20 meters from the barrier). Loops in either direction are permitted provided that they do not cross the long axis. Kneeling or sliding on two knees or sitting on the ice is not allowed and will be considered a fall. Touching the ice with hand(s) is not permitted. 11

13 Free Dance Requirements for Senior: Senior Solo Free Dance :: 2:50 +/- 10 seconds MUSIC MUST HAVE AN AUDIBLE RHYTHMIC BEAT WITH THE EXCEPTION OF 10 SECONDS AT THE BEGINNING OF THE PROGRAM Edge Elements Spin Two different combination edge elements - each edge must be held for a minimum of 3 seconds, but the total element must not exceed 12 seconds. And two different short edge element held for a minimum of three seconds, but not to exceed six seconds. No more than one combination and two short edge elements permitted. Edge elements should have different positions.^ One choreographic dance spin*, but no more. Minimum three revolutions on one foot. May change feet. Step Sequence Twizzle Series Dance Stop Two different step sequences, one selected from group A and one selected from Group B: Group A: Straight Line Step Sequences midline or diagonal Group B: Curved Step Sequences (counterclockwise or clockwise) circular or serpentine The step sequence must fully utilize the ice surface and should include a variety of steps and turns and must include brackets, counters, rockers, choctaws and twizzles. Jumps of more than one-half rotation, stops, dance spins, pirouettes, pattern regressions and loops must not be included in any step sequence. Two different twizzle series, but no more. One twizzle series must have a different entry edge and different direction for the two twizzles with a minimum two revolutions on each twizzle and no more than three steps between twizzles. The other series must have a minimum two revolutions on each twizzle with only one step between twizzles. Two full stops to express the character of the music, not to exceed five seconds each The stop must come at least 10 seconds after the start of the program and at least 10 seconds before the end of the program. * Choreographic Dance Spin a dance spin on one foot with a minimum of 3 revolutions in position which enhances the music and choreography. This element will be judged on how the spin relates to the music and the quality of the spin. Variations in positions will only be rewarded if they enhance the character of the music. ^ It is strongly suggested that the edge elements be of a different nature. For example, one spread eagle and one spiral as opposed to two spirals. 12

14 SHADOW DANCE EVENT The shadow dance event is comprised of one dance at each level. The specific dance at each level has been chosen by the LOC and is listed below. At this competition, this event is offered at the preliminary through senior solo dance levels. A team may be comprised of two females, two males or one female and one male. In any case, the steps skated shall be the lady s steps as specified in the U.S. Figure Skating Rulebook. Skaters may compete with multiple partners at different levels as long as they meet the test qualifications. All skaters must either compete at their test level or one level above their highest completed dance test. The test level is determined by a skater completing all of the dance tests within that level. Participants may test during the Series season without penalty. The determination of level will be based upon test level as of the 2015 Series entry deadline of March 15, 2015, and/or whenever the skater submits their registration to be a solo dance series participant, whichever is earlier.** Teams must remain the same throughout the season skaters may not change partners during the season. Teams may not change or move up levels in the 2015 Series once the deadline has passed and/or when they submit their registration to U.S. Figure Skating. Test level may be either standard or solo dance. Adult dance, adult solo dance, master s dance and master s solo dance do not fulfill the testing requirements for this event. LEVEL DANCE TESTING QUALIFICATION Preliminary Juvenile Intermediate Novice Rhythm Blues Cha Cha Foxtrot Foxtrot One partner must not have passed higher than the complete pre-bronze test. One partner must not have passed higher than the complete pre-silver test. One partner must not have passed higher than the complete silver test.
