2 SWIRLING WATERS Winner TSDAV Dance Composers Competition An Australian contemporary bush dance, composed in Canberra. Composed by: Lawrie Brown, February 1991 Formation: Five couples in a circle. Music: 32-bar Waltz, repeated five times, suggest "Russell's Waltz" (see below) Instructions: (Repeat 5-times) Bar Instructions No bars A1 balance forward & back holding RH with, and honouring, partner. 2 ladies RH-star once around holding the wrist of the lady in front. 6 A2 men north-country courtesy turn lady ending in ballroom hold 2 waltz 1/2 way round circle 6 B1 men LH-star once around holding the wrist of the man in front 2 RH-turn partner 1/2 way round end ladies facing out, men facing in, holding RH partner, LH corner B2 balance right and left acknowledging partner and corner 2 RH-turn partner 1/2 way round, end ladies facing in, men facing out 2 balance right and left acknowledging new partner and corner 2 LH-turn corner 1/2 way round to meet new partner to recommence 2 6 Notes: start facing partner with back to corner, all in a circle the dance should be done with a waltzing step in A1 the man guides the lady into the star, and he may continue with two small circles in place to fill the time, or may just balance forward and back during the courtesy turn in A2, the man stands still facing slightly in, whilst guiding the lady to turn clockwise to back under his left arm round behind him, and then walking forward around to ballroom position for the waltz. Note that the man will briefly have his left arm locked behind his back before releasing this hand and collecting the lady around her waist with his right arm into ballroom hold. This is the courtesy turn used at the end of the north country ladies chain. the progression is by two places each time through the dance. After 5 repeats you will be back with your partner. Initial Formation: Sicilian Longways (ie couple facing couple in longways set or circle) Music: 32-bar (American) Reel Bar Instructions No beats A1 A2 1's mirror turn opposite. (lady 1 RH-turn man 2, man 1 LH-turn lady 2) 1's turn partner with an open two-hand turn. 8 2's mirror turn opposite. (lady 2 RH-turn man 1, man 2 LH-turn lady 1) 2's turn partner with an open two-hand turn. 8 B1 advance and retire. 8 B2 mirror gypsy opposite. (lady 1 R shoulder gypsy man 2, man 1 L shoulder gypsy lady 2) mirror swing opposite with an open two-hand swing (lady 1 natural swing man 2, man 1 reverse swing lady 2) ending in progressed positions facing a new couple to restart the dance Notes: the dance should be done with a walking step. in the first part of the dance the turns should flow straight into each other, whilst in the second half, the gypsy (a turn without holding hands but holding eye contact) should flow straight into the open two-hand swing. 4 SILVERY WALTZ Composed: Claire Stoneman 32 bar Waltz Large circle- progressive Large single circle of couples, Man with partner on right. Start: all hold hands in a large Circle. Bars Instructions 1-4 Balance the circle and men turn lady from left to right (as in the circle waltz). 5-8 Repeat but end facing each other (facing but not directly in front of each other lady facing clockwise and man facing anti-clockwise) Move back 2 places (pass left shoulder to start and go back to partner ladies on inside of circle, men on outside) Left shoulder gypsy U-turn partner and acknowledge (3/4 gypsy to end facing opposite direction, slightly hesitate to acknowledge partner before moving on) Right hand turn corner (3/4 turn to change direction again) Left hand turn partner (3/4 turn to change direction again) Right hand balance corner (waltz balance corner then men turn lady under to end in a ballroom hold) Waltz on (finish waltz back in a single circle formation with lady on the left of the gentleman).

Person on right end of line is number 1, 2 is in the centre and 3 is on the left end of the line. Finish facing partner). 4 Set -- (Set twice to partner). 4 Swing -- (Swing your partner using a longarm hold). 16 Grand chain-- (Grand chain until back in place). 48 Bars Reel. Body 8 In to centre -- (The leading person goes into the centre of the set while the rest of the set join hands and circle left and right). 2 Set to partner -- (The centre person sets to their partner). 2 Turn partner -- (Centre person right arm turn their partner and finishes facing their opposite). 2 Set to opposite -- (Centre person sets to person of same sex and who is standing opposite to their partner). 2 Turn opposite -- (Centre person turns opposite person by the right arm). 8 Reel of three -- (With partner and opposite person). 16 Repeat -- (Dance the last 16 bars but this time with the 2 couples who were not danced with). 40 Bars Reel. 48 Chorus. The complete dance takes the sequence 8x40 Body -- (Where each person takes a turn as the leading person. With each of the lady's taking a turn as lead before each of the men. So we have sequence of leads is Lady 1, Lady 2 etc). 48 Chorus.

7 VICTORIA S WALTZ By Peter Foster 32 bar waltz Section A1 2 All holding hands in a circle, balance forward and back. 2 Men take the lady on their left and pass her across to place her on his right. 2 All holding hands in a circle, balance forward and back. 2 Women take the man on their left and pass him across to place him on her right (it s the same man who just passed her across). A2 2 All holding hands in a circle, balance forward and back. 2 Men take the lady on their left and pass her across to place her on his right. This is your new partner. 4 Two hand turn partner once around, open out standing next to your partner facing anticlockwise around the room, men on the inside, women on the outside. B1 2 Two waltz steps forward, turn on the spot (turning towards your partner) and take their other hand. 2 Two waltz steps backward (so still going in the same direction). 4 Repeat the other way: two waltz steps, turn on the spot, two waltz steps back. Then take a ballroom hold. B2 8 Waltz on.

8 AINSLIE SQUARE By Peter Foster Formation: Square 4x32 bar jig or reel Section Beats Description A1 16 All 4 ladies chain, across and back. A2 4 Men cast one place (cast left, go behind partner, moving one place anticlockwise around set). 4 Women cast one place (cast right, go behind the man that is now next to them). 4 Men cast again (men are now across the set from where they started). 4 Everyone set to the person they are now with (new partner). B1 8 Grand chain halfway (meeting this new partner again, men are now home). 8 Swing. B2 16 Promenade once around. Notes: A2 is pretty quick, people need to be alert. Note that the setting occurs at the end of A2, not the beginning of B1. The grand chain needs to start on time, so if the dancers are not completing the casts in time they should not do the setting.

9 COLONIALS QUADRILLE (Sydney version) 4 Couple Square (numbering 1324) 64 bar reel Section Beats Description A1 16 All circle left and right. A2 16 Couple 1 visit (in promenade hold, go anticlockwise inside the set, acknowledging each couple in turn). B1 8 Heads half right and left. 8 Sides half right and left. B2 8 Heads half right and left. 8 Sides half right and left. C1/C2 32 Grand chain all the way around the set, swing partner. D1 16 Ladies wheel: waist hold with partner, women make a right hand star. D2 16 Mens wheel: still in a waist hold with partner, come back with the men making a left hand star. Repeat 3 more times with each couple in turn leading (when a side couple is leading it is the sides who start the rights and lefts in B1/B2) JUBILEE JIG 32 bar jig Section Beats Description A1 8 All circle left and right. 8 Circle right. A2 4 Men go in to the middle, take hands and make arches. 4 While the men retire the women go in under the arches. Women now make arches. 4 While the women retire the men go in under the arches. Men clap on the 4th step. 4 Men retire. B1 16 Grand chain: starting with your partner as 1, grand chain to number 7, who becomes your new partner. B2 16 Swing new partner.

10 RIVERBOAT WALTZ Step : Waltz Formation: Quadrille, numbering Tops & Sides. 2 1,2,3, up -- (All 4 couples in an extended ballroom hold, men start left foot & ladies start right foot. Each take 1 waltz step towards centre of the set and raise inside foot for 1 bar.) 2 Back,2,3, beside -- (Using same hold, all take 1 waltz step back to place. Use 1 bar to finish standing side by side with partners holding inside hands). 4 Tops Advance & Retire -- (Take 2 waltz steps each way.) 2 Tops 2 slow forward -- (Take 2 slow steps towards opposite person then drop hands with partner.) 2 Ladies Forward -- (Ladies take 2 slow steps forward while men retire with 2 slow steps. During these steps you take a ballroom hold with your opposite. So at the end of this the top couples have changed partners and the men are in their original position). 4 Tops waltz to opposite place -- (Tops waltz anticlockwise inside the set to the opposite side. Finish beside new partner holding inside hands.) 4 Tops Advance and Retire -- (Take 2 waltz steps each way). 2 Tops 2 slow forward -- (Take 2 slow steps towards your original partner and drop hands with your current partner). 2 Men forward -- (Men take 2 slow steps forward while ladies retire with 2 slow steps, while retiring take your partner in a ballroom hold. At the end of this sequence top couples have their original partners and are in original position). 8 Circular waltz -- (All 4 couples circular waltz half way around the set to finish in their opposite couples position). 32 Repeat the last 32 bars with the side couples leading. 64 Bars Waltz Variation: In the 8 bar circular waltz, waltz back to original place. Tunes : Riverboat Waltz (written by Peter McLaren of Goulburn), When Irish Eyes Are Smiling or any other 32 bar pseudo Irish waltz. Tempo : 40 Bars per minute. The movements represent: a) All forward and back -- The passengers and their guests arriving, looking at the boat and the guests returning to shore. b) Advance and Retire -- The loading of goods onto and from the boat. c) Waltz change places -- The boat moving down the river to a farm. d) Advance and Retire -- The loading of goods to and from the farm. e) Waltz change places -- The boat moving down the river to the next port. f) Circular Waltz -- The paddles going round for the whole journey.

11 HAYMAKER'S JIG - Version 1 (Sir Roger De Coverley) Formation: Longways set for 5 couples. 4 Right hand turn -- (Top lady and bottom man, meet in the centre of the set then turn). 4 Top man same -- (Top man, bottom lady right hand turn). 4 Left hand turn -- (Top lady and bottom man). 4 Top man same -- (Top man, bottom lady left hand turn). 4 Two hand turn -- (Top lady and bottom man). 4 Top man same -- (Top man, bottom lady two hand turn). 4 Do-si-do right -- (Top lady and bottom man). 4 Top man same -- (Top man, bottom lady do-si-do right). 4 Do-si-do left -- (Top lady and bottom man). 4 Top man same -- (Top man, bottom lady do-si-do left). 4 Honour -- (Top lady, bottom man advance 3 steps, honour and retire 3 steps). 4 Top man same -- (Top man, bottom lady advance, honour, retire). 16 Cast off -- (All cast off, top couple form two handed arch at bottom of set, all other couples go under the arch, top couple become new bottom couple). 64 Bars Jig. 12 EVENING 3 STEP Formation: Circle of Couples. Start: All facing anticlockwise, man on inside of circle, with inside hand hold. 1 1,2,3 tap -- (Take 3 steps forward, starting with the outside foot and tap the inside foot). 1 Turn across -- (Using 3 steps, starting with the "tapped" foot change sides by each doing a solo turn with the man going behind the lady. You finish facing your original direction holding your partners hand and "tapping"). 1 Turn back -- (Repeat the last bar to return to place but lady goes behind the man. Finish facing original direction and holding partners hand). 1 Backwards -- (Take 3 steps backwards and tap). 1 Set -- (Set away then together while travelling forward so that you make a "diamond" pattern. Finish in a ballroom hold). 1 Chassez -- (2 chassez steps to the man's left). 2 Circular waltz -- (4/4 waltz so 2 full turns and finish beside partner ready to start again). 8 Bars 4/4 March. Music: Waltz in ¾ tempo own music Daisy Bell composed by Harry Dacre in 1892 (aka Daisy, Daisy aka A Bicycle Built for Two ) or any similar waltz. Formation: Couples in line of dance around the room (can be progressive) Bars (beats) Description 8-bar introduction (24) Face partner and honour. Both face LOD in high promenade hold. 1-4 (12) Chassée diagonal left and right, and repeat.
