Goulbourn Skating Club Skater s Handbook

Welcome to the Goulbourn Skating Club! In this Handbook, you will find information on the Goulbourn Skating Club, its programs, rules and regulations, executive positions and contact information. As a Goulbourn Skating Club member/parent, it is important to familiarize yourself with this information. Please read this Handbook carefully, and enjoy your time on the ice. For further information on our programs, schedules and calendar, please visit our website at Goulbourn Skating Club In 2004, the Richmond Skating Club and the Stittsville Skating Club, two long-standing skating clubs operating in our region, joined forces to create the Goulbourn Skating Club ( GSC or the Club ). The Club was formed in an effort to better serve its current members and the needs of an ever-growing Ottawa West community. A member of Skate Canada, the GSC has a membership of close to 600 skaters ranging from preschoolers to adult, and a large team of professional coaches. As such, GSC is the third largest skating club in the Ottawa area. The GSC is run solely by a group of dedicated volunteers and has no paid employees except for the professional skating coaches who teach our programs. Further details are provided at the end of this Handbook. If you are interested in assisting the GSC in any way, please contact us. 4 GSC SKATE PROGRAMS The Goulbourn Skating Club offers the following programs using Skate Canada Guidelines: CANSkate CANPowerSkate PrePowerSkate STARSkate SynchroSkate AdultSkate The next several pages of this Handbook provide descriptions of these programs. For further information pertaining to Skate Canada Programs, please visit the Skate Canada website: and the Eastern Ontario Region of Skate Canada website: CanSkate Program Information The CanSkate learn-to-skate program is offered to beginners aged 3 years and up and is tailored to each user-group (pre-school, youth, adult). Participants earn badges while learning fundamental skating skills. CanSkate is the feeder program to all other Skate Canada programs and is designed to teach skating to all skaters, whether they wish to be recreational skaters or figure skaters, or they aspire to play hockey or ringette. CanSkate lessons are generally taught in a group format by a Professional Coach certified under the 3M National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP). Carefully trained Program Assistants also work with CanSkate skaters. The Club s goal, following Skate Canada s delivery standards, is for all CanSkate participants to be moving 90% of the time while on the ice. CanSkate is Canada's only national learn-to-skate program. It was developed by skating experts to teach the fundamentals of skating in a progressive and sequential manner. Student skaters are taught in a group format, with a typical coach to student ratio of 1:10. Skaters progress at their own rate and coaches use various tools to create a fun environment. The average number of skaters on the ice during a CanSkate program is 60 (on a North American-sized arena). The exact number of skaters on each session depends on: size of skating club, number of Professional Coaches, amount of ice time and size of rink. Skate Canada requires all skating clubs to provide at least 10 minutes of teaching from a Professional Coach to each group of children. GSC s goal is to exceed this minimum requirement and provide each skater with more than 10 minutes per session with a Professional Coach, in addition to the extra learning time provided to skaters by trained GSC Program Assistants. Program, Structure, Awards, Incentives The CanSkate program is structured in a grid-format, consisting of the development of six fundamental movements: GO forward, GO backwards, STOP, TURN, SPIN and JUMP, organized in six stages of learning. An optional 7th level is for skaters wishing to progress into figure skating

Once the skills of each stage are mastered, a badge is awarded, and the skater moves to the next level. It is not unusual for a skater to be working on some elements for 2 badges at a time, provided the skater is ready for such elements. The names of the STAGE badges are: Stage 1 Balance Stage 2 - Glide Forward Stage 3 - Glide Backward Stage 4 - Edges Stage 5 - Power Stage 6 - Speed Stage 7 (optional) - Pre-Preliminary Advanced CanSkate/Introduction to STARSkate GSC may from time to time offer a special Advanced CanSkate session for those CanSkaters looking for more of a challenge. This session is a 50 minute group lesson with a Professional Coach and will introduce the skaters to figure skating. There is no independent skate time requirement as with the Primary skaters (see Primary level, under the STARSkate heading below), making it a great transition program for those advanced CanSkaters who aren t yet ready to work on their own, without a Professional Coach. Tips on Equipment for CanSkaters Skates Avoid buying a larger size skate in anticipation that the skater will grow into it : ill-fitting equipment will cause discomfort and poor results. A general rule of thumb is to have the skater push his/her foot all the way to the front of the boot with the boot unlaced. You should be able to slide one slim finger down between the back of the boot and the skater s heel. If there is more than one finger of space, the boot is likely too large. Good ankle support is essential. Molded plastic skates should be avoided: they are inflexible and make it difficult for skaters to bend their knees and push off. A leather boot is ideal. One pair of socks should be worn with skates. Too much padding can restrict circulation, cause feet to sweat, feel numb and get cold. Skate Care Sharpen new skates and re-sharpen after 30 hours of ice time. For those skaters skating in figure skates, the pick is part of the design of figure skates, is essential to proper balance and should not be removed. Someone who is qualified in sharpening figure skates should sharpen figure skates. We recommend Dale Baker of Blades & Things, Skate guards should be worn at all times off ice to protect blade edges. Always remove guards before storing skates as blades can rust. Unlace skates sufficiently before removing them so the back of the boot will not break down or rip. Blades should be dried thoroughly after skating, to avoid rust problems. Clothing and Accessories Skaters should be comfortably and warmly dressed. Recommended attire is warm pants that allow for movement, turtle neck, warm jacket and warm mittens. One-piece snowsuits and bulky snow pants inhibit movement and make it difficult to get up after a fall. CSA approved (hockey) helmets are mandatory for beginners and a warm hat or headband for more advanced CanSkaters is recommended

CanPowerSkate Program Information CanPowerSkate is the only nationally regulated power skating program in Canada. It was developed by a team of hockey, figure skating and ringette experts to teach the fundamentals of power skating in a progressive and sequential manner. The CanPowerSkate program stresses balance, power, agility, speed and endurance skills, all of which are especially important for hockey and ringette players. CanPowerSkate provides an alternative to figure skating and is an excellent complement for those hockey and ringette athletes or other skaters wanting to improve their speed and power. Its unique skill award program, with a bronze, silver and gold awards at 6 different progressive levels, provides incentives and motivation for skaters to continue to achieve. Coaches trained and certified through CanPowerSkate coach courses deliver the Club s CanPowerSkate programs. There are different sessions available according to the age and level of the skater, and the GSC offers both CanPower and PrePower as part of its CanPowerSkate program. CanPower CanPower is geared to skaters aged approximately six or older who already have basic forward and backward skating skills (they must be able to skate the length of the rink using alternate strides) and are able to stop on command without use of the boards. The GSC requires registering CanPower skaters to have played 1 year of hockey or equivalent. For safety reasons, participants should wear full hockey/ringette equipment that is CSA approved. Drills with hockey sticks and ringette sticks are also used in CanPower sessions. PrePower PrePower is designed for young skaters, approximately four to six years of age, or older beginner skaters, who can stand up on skates and move forward (glide and stride) who are not ready for CanPowerSkate Level 1. PrePower helps develop basic skating abilities in a power skating-specific environment, including balance skills, forward and backward skating, stopping, turning and agility skills. The curriculum is presented in three progressive levels complete with its own awards to encourage participation and motivate skaters. PrePower has been designed to run concurrently with CanSkate sessions, or it may be offered on its own session, if registration numbers permit. Award Levels The GSC CanPowerSkate Coordinator administers the CanPowerSkate program, registration and badges. The CanPowerSkate program consists of skills divided into six levels, arranged in progressions increasing in complexity. Levels 1 to 3 focus on the fundamentals of skating, and Levels 4 to 6 place additional focus on the acquisition of efficient technique, speed, agility, technical aspects of stride and acceleration and skating with the puck/ring. Skaters are evaluated on skill level and are timed as they perform a test involving skills in a course-like pattern. The skater receives a mark combining his/her skill performance plus test time. This determines whether the skater receives a Bronze, Silver or Gold award bar for that level. CanPowerSkate members and parents must conform to the Rules and Responsibilities of the Goulbourn Skating Club on the ice, in the dressing rooms, and in the arena. The Club does not supervise dressing rooms or off-ice areas of the arena

STARSkate What Happens After CanSkate? Participants in the higher levels of CanSkate who are ready for more of a challenge are encouraged to enter the Skate Canada STARSkate Program. STARSkate was developed by Skate Canada for skaters to progress into figure skating. Opportunities for taking tests and competing are available to skaters at this level. STAR = Skills, Test, Achievement, Recognition. Figure skating lessons are taught in-group, semi-private or private lesson format depending on the skating level. GSC groups STARSkate into four levels: Primary, Low Intermediate, High Intermediate and Senior. These levels tie into the Skate Canada tests that skaters may take (see descriptions under STARSkate Programs below for Skate Canada tests). Primary: Low Intermediate: High Intermediate: Senior: This is the first level of STARSkate. As a general rule, skaters who have passed CanSkate Level 4 or are otherwise recommended by a coach may move up to this STARSkate level. Primary Skaters are generally required to skate twice per week. Lessons are held in a group format, with some independent skating required. The Club provides the coach for the group lesson portion. For the independent work portion, skaters may hire a coach for private lessons to accelerate progress. Primary or CanSkaters who are ready to skate independently and who have not yet passed the complete Preliminary Freeskate test, skate at the Low Intermediate level. Generally, skaters are coached privately at this level (or when opportunity warrants semi-privately). Skaters hire their own coach for lessons. Skaters who are already skating in the STARSkate program and who have passed the complete Preliminary Freeskate test (or are coach recommended) are eligible to skate at the High Intermediate level. Generally, skaters are coached privately at this level. Skaters hire their own coach for lessons. Skaters who are already skating in the STARSkate program and have passed the complete Junior Bronze Freeskate test (or are coachrecommended) are eligible to skate at the Senior level. Generally, skaters are coached privately at this level. Skaters hire their own coach for lessons. When a skater is ready to progress to the Intermediate level of STARSkate, GSC recommends that you (parent and/or skater) interview several coaches to find the one who can best meet the needs of the skater in terms of costs, availability and skating level. All private and semi private lessons, which - 4 -

you arrange for your skater, will be directly billed to you from your coach. At the Primary level of STARSkate coach, fees are included in program costs for the group lesson portion only. If a skater participates in competitions or test days, your coach will bill you her/his rate for these activities. Again, the coach will bill you directly and you are responsible to pay your coach. As a STARSkater progresses into Dance, usually a separate Dance Coach is required. Your Coach will advise you the times and availability of the Dance Coach. The Dance Coach will also bill you for lessons, either directly by a bill to you or indirectly by a bill to your regular coach. If you have budgetary limitations, please communicate these to your chosen coach. Coaches are more than willing to work within your budget. Communication is the key to a successful relationship with your coach! STARSkate Program Areas GSC follows Skate Canada s recommended program for STARSkaters. STARSkate offers opportunities for skaters to develop basic figure skating skills in four different areas: Skating Skills, Free Skating, Dance and Interpretive, with the option of taking Skate Canada Tests and/or attending STARSkate competitions. Skating Skills are a combination of fundamental skating movements, executed on a pattern and skated solo to prescribed music. The basic components of all disciplines of figure skating are incorporated into the program. The movements are derived from former compulsory figures, free skating and ice dancing. The objective of the Skating Skills program is to master the basic fundamentals of skating - edge quality, control, power and speed. There are 6 Skating Skills tests in the STARSkate program: Preliminary Junior Bronze Senior Bronze Junior Silver Senior Silver Gold Ice Dance consists of seven levels of dance tests. The Dance Test program teaches timing, musicality, rhythm interpretation, structure as well as basic skating skills such as edges, flow, control and unison. Each level of dance test has 3 or more dances in that level. The dances within a level (i.e. the Preliminary level) can be tried in any order, but the skater must pass all the required number of dances at that dance test level before testing any dances at the next level. In addition to the traditional compulsory dances, there are also Creative Dances to challenge skaters' creativity, artistry and originality. The Dance Tests are as follows: Preliminary Junior Bronze Senior Bronze Junior Silver Senior Silver Gold Diamond Free Skate consists of the execution of jumps, spins, footwork, field movements and stroking, either in isolation or performed in sequence to music. There are six Free Skating tests in the STARSkate Program: Preliminary Junior Bronze - 5 -

Senior Bronze Junior Silver Senior Silver Gold Each test consists of 2 parts: (1) Elements in Isolation and (2) a FreeSkate Program to music. A skater must pass both parts to pass the complete Freeskate test at each level. Interpretive or Artistic encourages and develops skater creativity, expression, musicality, movement, interpretation of music, as well as the use of space, rhythm, line and style. The program provides skaters with the opportunity to explore the performance aspect of skating without focusing on technical elements. The Interpretive tests consist of skating to and interpreting a piece of music 2.0 to 3.0 minutes (+/- 10 seconds) in length. Skaters can take Interpretive tests as individuals and/or as a couple (male/female, female/female or male/male) at four levels: Introductory Bronze Silver Gold Tips on Equipment Skates Avoid buying a larger size skate in anticipation that the skater will grow into it : ill-fitting equipment will cause discomfort and poor results. A general rule of thumb is to have the skater push his/her foot all the way to the front of the boot with the boot unlaced. You should be able to slide one slim finger down between the back of the boot and the skater s heel. If there is more than one finger of space, the boot is likely too large. A leather boot is ideal. One pair of socks should be worn with skates. Too much padding can restrict circulation. Buy used or new skates at a reputable figure skate supplier. Inform the seller of the skating level of the skater. Skate Care Use a person that is skilled in sharpening figure skates, not hockey skates. Sharpen new skates and re-sharpen after 30 hours of ice time. Bring your skates to a qualified skate sharpener! We recommend Dale Baker of Blades & Things, The bottom pick should not be removed. The pick is part of the design of figure skates, is essential to proper balance. Skate guards should be worn at all times off ice to protect blade edges. Always remove guards before storing skates as blades can rust. Unlace skates sufficiently before removing them so the back of the boot will not break down or rip. Blades should be dried thoroughly after skating, to avoid rust problems. Clothing and Accessories Skaters should dress appropriately: tights, dress or knit pants, warm jacket or fleece, gloves, and hat or headband. It is important to be warm (but not over-dressed), comfortable, and have freedom of movement. No jeans allowed! Testing and Competitions The Coach will assess the skater s abilities and propose which tests and competitions might be appropriate for the skater to work towards. The Coach will then work with the skater to achieve the - 6 -

skater s goals. The Coach will invoice you directly for the costs associated with test days and competitions, and payment will be made by you directly to your coach. Test Days Goulbourn Skating Club holds Test Days during the fall, winter and spring sessions. These Test Days are published on the GSC calendar. Your coach will recommend which level your skater should test, and a request for a test will be submitted to the Club s Test Chair, along with the applicable test fee and hospitality fee (to fund the expenses associated with obtaining judges for the event and hosting the Test Day). The test fee and hospitality fee is a combination of an amount that is pre-set and is paid to the judge who tests the skater, and an amount required by the Club to host the event, pay the judges expenses, and purchase food and refreshments for the judges and the coaches, in compliance with Skate Canada protocol. A list of candidates and proposed test schedule is posted on the bulletin boards as the Test Day draws closer. Test Days are very schedule-driven and you will need to consult the bulletin boards to see when your skater s test is scheduled. Skaters must be at the arena on Test Day at least 45 to 60 minutes prior to their scheduled test. Skaters must be attired appropriately for their test. The Coach will give you the details on what the judge expects. Skaters should check in with their Coach. There is a fiveminute warm up period for all skaters trying a particular test or level. Each skater is then required to perform before the Skate Canada judge who will mark the performance according to the criteria outlined by Skate Canada. If your skater is trying a Dance Test, your Coach may recommend the services of a Dance Coach. The arrangements and payment will be similar to the regular Coach s services. Skaters can wait for the results of their tests. The results are submitted to Skate Canada and confirmation of the test achievement will be sent to the Club. Badges and test cards will be distributed through the Club s Test Chair. Competitions There are also many competition opportunities for STARSkaters, including the National STARSkate (Interclub) Championships. Various clubs host invitational competitions throughout the year. A list of upcoming competitions will be posted on the bulletin boards and on the GSC website. You can also check the Eastern Ontario Region website at Fees for entry are the skater s responsibility. Parents/skaters should check with their coach to determine which competitions would be most appropriate for the skater. SynchroSkate Synchronized skating, or "synchro", is a specialized discipline of skating involving groups skaters performing various group formations and manoeuvres to music of the team's choice. The term synchronized skating reflects the importance of unison, the accuracy of formations and the precision of the team. The objective is for the team to perform as one unit, executing circles, blocks, lines, wheels and intersections in unison to the music, while demonstrating quality edges, power and flow. The Club s synchronized skating team is called the Silhouettes. The Silhouettes became a synchronized skating team in They are a group of dedicated, hard-working and diligent - 7 -

skaters. A skater may enrol in SynchroSkate in addition to or instead of STARSkate. A minimum enrolment is required for this program to continue to run. The Silhouettes skate as part of Festival SynchroSkate, which program was introduced by Skate Canada in 2000, with the first National Festival SynchroSkate competition held in April Festival SynchroSkate provides recreational synchronized skating teams the opportunity to compete at various interclub and invitational competitions throughout the year. The Silhouettes usually compete in one or two competitions throughout the season and in addition, may do one or two skating performances per year. AdultSkate GSC s adult skate is a recreational program designed for adults, from learn-to-skate to advanced levels. It is also a program where adults may begin or enhance their skills. The classes are taught as group or individual lessons, based on the elements worked on and the needs of the skater. Adult skating is growing in popularity, and more and more clubs are offering opportunities to this segment of the population

SKATING SEASONS The GSC skating year is broken down into 4 seasons and includes the following programs, always depending on enrolment: SEASON TIMEFRAME PROGRAMS OFFERED Fall September (sometimes overflows into early October and may start at the end of August) STARSkate SynchroSkate CanPower Winter Spring Summer (run as part of Ottawa West Skate program in conjunction with Kanata Skate Clubs) October March (our main season) April (occasionally overflows into first week of May) July and August (some programs may begin at the end of June) CANSkate STARSkate SynchroSkate CanPower PrePower AdultSkate CanSkate STARSkate CanSkate PrePower STARSkate AdultSkate - 9 -

GSC ICE RULES General Conduct All skaters, coaches, parents and guardians are responsible for familiarizing themselves with and abiding by the rules and policies of the Goulbourn Skating Club ( GSC ). Skaters and coaches must refrain from the use of profane language as well as disrespectful or humiliating language or behavior, on and off ice. There will be no eating or drinking (apart from water) on the ice. There will be no chewing gum on the ice. Skaters must wear appropriate attire on the ice, such as skating dresses, skirts, tights, warm leggings. NO JEANS permitted! Hair must be neatly back. Skaters and coaches should strive to be aware of others on the ice surface and should use their common sense and courtesy to make the ice surface a safe place. Skaters and coaches should make themselves aware of skaters having lessons or having music played. Skate Canada coaches may drink coffee or other hot beverages at the board level on the ice. No kicking or other defacement of ice. On Ice supervision The Goulbourn Skating Club Coaches have the authority from the GSC Executive to verbally order skaters to leave the session: (a) if they have not adhered to GSC rules; (b) if they exhibit inappropriate behavior; or (c) if they have shown disrespect towards any person or property. Coaches must advise the GSC Executive immediately should such a situation occur. The GSC Coaches are responsible for ensuring that there is adequate supervision before leaving the session. A session may not be left unattended. On Ice Session After a fall get up immediately. Sitting on the ice is not allowed. If you do not get up, it will be assumed that you are injured and require assistance. When retying skates, the skater must depart from the ice surface. Congregations of skaters along the sides of the boards are not permitted. Extended conversations on the ice are not permitted. If a serious discussion (which may be emotionally charged ) between a coach and a skater or, between skaters or between coaches should be necessary, please exit the ice and speak in private. Zamboni doors leading to the ice surface MUST be closed at all times during a session. All skaters must exit the ice surface when the zamboni doors are opened for the zamboni to enter the ice surface. Doors leading to the ice surface should be closed but NOT shut tightly during sessions so that skaters can leave the ice surface easily if and when required

Skating Skills Session Right of way shall be given to skater(s) having a lesson or having music played by coach s request. Freeskating will NOT be permitted on skating skills session. Use of harness NOT permitted on skating skill sessions. Freeskate Session Right of way shall be given to skater(s) having a lesson or having music played. Dancing and dance requests are permitted on free skate sessions only if and when a skater is currently in a lesson with a coach. On the sessions when the dance coach is present, his/her request will be taken on a priority basis. Skaters must not stand still on the ice except when waiting for their solo music to start. Dance Session Freeskating is NOT permitted during dance sessions. Skaters are encouraged to skate all dances up to their ability. Use of harness NOT permitted on dance sessions. Stroking/Conditioning Session Skaters not registered for the session must leave the ice. Private lessons are NOT permitted during this session Use of harness NOT permitted during this session. Guest Skating A guest skater is defined by the GSC as a skater who is (a) a member of the GSC but, is not enrolled for that skating session which the guest skater wishes to skate; or (b) not a member of the GSC. Guest skating will only be permitted if registration permits. PRIOR to skating, skaters must get permission from the GSC Registrar, advise coaches, sign guest skaters book in coach room and pay guest fee. All guest skaters must be members in good standing with Skate Canada. Music/Solo Request Rules Skaters and parents/guardians are NOT permitted to request music. Coaches are the only persons permitted to request music to be played. Coaches may only request music for a skater currently in a lesson. Coaches may request music for skaters whose coaches are not on the ice (if in lesson with that coach), otherwise skaters/solos are to be played in rotation and no skater s music will be played twice until all other skaters on the ice (excluding skaters in lesson) have had the opportunity to have their music played

The Dance Coach has priority over all other Coaches when the Dance Coach is present on the session

Fundraising DISCIPLINARY POLICY The Goulbourn Skating Club could not offer quality programs at reasonable prices without fundraising activities. There are at least 2 fundraisers per year. The first is the chocolate bar activity which occurs at the time of registration. You buy the chocolate bars from the Club, and then sell the bars and keep the proceeds, or you pay a buy-out fee to the Club in lieu of selling the chocolates. This is a mandatory fundraiser. The second, which is voluntary, may be a skate-a-thon, a raffle or another product sale. All skaters are highly encouraged to participate. As a not-for-profit organization, Goulbourn Skating Club prices its programs to break even and fundraising assists in keeping program fees down. The Club puts all monies back into Club expenses such as: special events, supplies, awards, coaching costs, capital equipment and ice costs. Ice costs are very expensive and must be paid in advance to the City of Ottawa. We thank you for your participation and assistance in keeping our program costs low. Coaches Coaches are invaluable in the development of a skater s skill. They are teachers and mentors for the thousands of young athletes they deal with in their day-to-day work. They work not only with skaters, but also the skater s parent(s) in setting realistic goals and the training required to reach their potential and their goals. All coaches must go through and pass the courses required by the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP). Currently, all coaches who work at GSC must meet the minimum criteria as outlined by Skate Canada and be a member in good standing with Skate Canada. The Goulbourn Skating Club is proud of its many coaches and the diverse backgrounds that enable us to run the variety of programs that we do. If you would like further information regarding our coaches, please visit our website: GSC Executive Members The Goulbourn Skating Club is an organization run by a team of dedicated volunteers.
