WOMEN S ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS Notes for Senior Judges and Coaches These notes are provided for judges and coaches and are to be read in conjunction with the summary document of the STEP 7 10 requirements and the FIG Code of Points. The FIG judges courses provided explanations of some issues that are not covered in the currently published FIG Code of Points but these will be included in the updated Code (yet to be published) and this information is provided here. STEPS 7 10 REQUIREMENTS FOR 2017 ONWARDS DIFFICULTY VALUE (DV) STEP 7 and 8 count 7 elements including the dismount STEP 9 and 10 count 8 elements including the dismount Floor and Beam - The DV skills must contain a minimum of 3 Acro elements (one of which is the dismount if performed) and 3 Dance elements. The remaining counting skills are the next highest value of either dance or acro If the gymnast fails to dismount then she must count 1 less element in the DV COMPOSITION REQUIREMENTS There are 4 Composition Requirements in keeping with FIG The CRs have been designed to be progressive towards FIG requirements but not everything is seamless! The dismount requirement has been deleted for Beam and Floor but kept for Bars to ensure development of better dismounts on this apparatus DIFFICULTY BONUS 1. Bonus is awarded for individual elements or connections of higher value 2. In general, the DB for one STEP is the CR for the next STEP 3. There is a maximum of 3 bonuses for a total of 0.9 that can be awarded 4. A bonus option may be used more than once a. If a STEP 9 or 10 gymnast has 2 different D value elements, or UB 2 different non-flight elements with a 360 degree turn in her routine she may have 0.3 for each of them. s i. UB: Shoot ½ to handstand and Pak salto ii. UB: Giant 360 turn and Toe On, Toe Off to handstand 360 turn iii. BB: Aerial cartwheel and aerial walkover iv. FX: double back salto, 2½ twisting back salto 5. If an individual element satisfies 2 DBs it may only receive bonus once a. example toe on toe off to handstand with 360 turn bonus for D value element or element with 360 turn 6. A series on beam may receive 2 bonuses a. example, flic flac to 1 foot flic flac to 2 feet back salto dismount i. 0.3 for the acro series with 2 flight elements and 0.3 for the connected series dismount with a flight element on the beam into a salto off the beam b. STEP 8 Acro series of flic flac back salto i. 0.3 for the acro series with 2 flight elements and 0.3 for C value acro element 7. Bonus will only be awarded without a fall 8. FIG Repetition Rules apply will apply to the awarding of bonus 9. A devalued element may be used for the awarding of DB 1

BARS For STEPs 7 and 8 there will be no deduction for o Jump from LB to HB o Short bar routines - 6 skills/elements or less (6.3 COP FIG deductions apply). STEP 9 and 10 o Short bar routine penalties will apply. Elements counted are those with a DV. For example, a cast that does not reach within 10 of vertical (handstand) has no value and is not counted as an element. Repetition rules apply ALL CASTS and Group 2, 4, 5 circle elements will be judged as per FIG Root Groups - Refer COP Root skill IS determined by the entry into the skill and the direction of the rotation (backward or forward). : Clear Circles, Stadlers, Toe on toe off are all different Root Skills Root Skills rule does not apply to Kips, Giants and casts to Handstand Composition Requirements STEP 7 Requirement CR 1 Element to or through handstand Cast to handstand Circle to handstand Giant circle to handstand CR 2 Close bar circle element (Group 2, 4 or 5) Clear circle, piked/straddled circle, stalder circle Clear hip circle Piked/straddled sole circle Stalder circle Hiccup CR 3 2 nd Close bar circle element from a different root group to CR#2 Clear hip circle Piked/straddled sole circle Stalder circle Hiccup CR 4 Salto dismount Flyaway Toe shoot front STEP 8 Requirement CR 1 Giant circle backward or forward (Element or 3.206)) CR 2 Flight element Hiccup Shoot ½ to handstand CR 3 2 close bar circle elements from different root groups (Group 2, 4 or 5) (may include flight element) Pak Salto 2 of Clear hip circle Piked/straddled sole circle Stalder circle Hiccup CR 4 Salto dismount Flyaway Toe shoot front 2

STEP 9 Requirement CR 1 Non flight element with minimum 180 LA turn on the bar (not mount) Handstand ½ turn Giant circle with ½ turn Close bar circling element with ½ turn CR 2 2 different flight elements Hiccup Shoot ½ to handstand Pak Salto CR 3 2 close bar circle elements from 2 of different root groups (Group 2, 4 Clear hip circle or 5) (may include flight element) Piked/straddled sole circle Stalder circle Hiccup CR 4 Salto dismount (min B value) (Not flyaway with ½ twist) Flyaway with 1/1 twist Toe shoot front Double back salto tucked STEP 10 Requirement CR 1 Non flight element with minimum 180 LA turn on the bar (not mount) Handstand ½ turn Giant circle with ½ turn Close bar circling element with ½ turn CR 2 2 different flight elements Hiccup Shoot ½ to handstand Pak Salto CR 3 Different grips (not cast, mount or dismount) Forward sole circle Forward giant Forward stalder circle CR 4 Salto dismount (min C value) Flyaway with 1/1 twist Toe shoot front ½ twist Double back salto tucked Difficulty Bonus STEP 7 and 8 the stretched flyaway does not have to come from a giant or cast of minimum angle STEP 9 and 10 Non flight element with min. 360º turn (not mount or dismount) has been specified because it is an FIG requirement and can be satisfied by giant full turn of C value Gymnast may have bonus for each different D value element One element cannot be awarded more than one bonus example toe on toe off with 360 turn may only have bonus for element with 360 turn or D value element The element in reverse or L grip is to be of minimum B value (STEP 9) eg. forward giant, forward stalder Notes If the gymnast walks or runs under the LB after presenting to the judges she will receive a -0.3 deduction for undisciplined behaviour. She may walk under the bar before presenting to the judges and/or after a fall. Empty swing - a swing forward or backward without the execution of an element from the Table of Elements, before the swing reverses to the opposite direction Does not apply to : o STEPs 1 to 6 where swings are a requirement o STEPs 7 10 individual elements 3.604, and

If a gymnasts performs a long kip out of a shaposhnikova element she will be deducted 0.5 for an empty swing Intermediate swing - a pump swing from a front support or a long swing not needed to perform the next element. o If a gymnast performs more than one intermediate swing in order to restart her exercise, there is only one deduction for intermediate swing of o If the gymnast kips to the LB or HB, stops, then recommences her routines she is deducted -0.5 for an intermediate swing Falls during flight elements o if the gymnast grasps the bar with both hands (ie a momentary hang or support on the bar), the DV is awarded. If the gymnast does not grasp the bar with both hands, no DV is awarded. Other falls o If the gymnast executes a swing and pullover to the HB this is taken as a fall but she is permitted an intermediate swing to recommence the routine. o STEPs 7 10 If a gymnast kips to the HB, stops, releases her hands and then regrips the bar in the same or different grip this is considered a fall. o If the gymnast falls and recommences her routine by jumping from the LB to the HB she will not be deducted for uncharacteristic movement. 4

BEAM Composition Requirements CRs 1, 2 and 4 are the same as FIG. CR 1 Connection of at least two different dance elements, one being a leap or jump with 180 split (cross or side) or straddle position cannot include a hop CR 3 Acro Series o As per FIG the elements must be connected but the connection does not need to be travelling in the same direction o Rolls, handstands and holds may NOT be used to fulfill CR STEP 7 STEP 8 STEP 9 STEP 10 CR3 Requirement Acro series of 2 (or more) elements directly connected flight not required, (excluding mount & dismount) (elements may be the same or different) Acro series of 2 (or more) elements directly connected 1 element with flight, (excluding mount & dismount) (elements may be the same or different) Acro series of 2 (or more) elements, directly connected (excluding mount & dismount). 2 elements with flight. (elements may be the same or different) Direct connection of 2 acro flight elements one of which is a salto (excluding mount & dismount). s Backward walkover x 2 Tic toc - Backward walkover Cartwheel cartwheel Backward walkover flic flac Tic toc - flic flac Cartwheel - flic flac Flic flac - flic flac Flic flac - flic flac Flic flac back salto Flic flac back salto Aerial cartwheel - Aerial cartwheel Aerial cartwheel flic flac Aerial walkover flic flac CR 4 Acrobatic elements in different directions (forward/ sideward AND backward) In STEP 7 one of the acro elements (CR4) is required to have flight. The reason for this is that STEP 7 should have a flight element on the beam and it is preparation for the acro series requirement in STEP 8. Difficulty Bonus Acro Series Bonus Essentially the DB for one STEP is the CR for the next STEP except that: For Difficulty Bonus the acro connections are treated the same as for FIG acro CV they must be rebounding (STEP 8, 9). Connections with rebounding effect utilise the elasticity of the apparatus and develop speed in one direction. o land the first element (with hand support) on two feet and take off immediately into the second element, or o land the first element on one foot and place the second foot quickly on the beam, to take off immediately into the second element. o There should be no discernible pause between the elements; they should appear as one continuous movement In STEP 7 to receive DB the gymnast must have an acro series with the connection travelling in the same direction eg backward walkover flic flac 5

STEP 8 Connected series dismount with a flight element on the beam into a salto off the beam. The flight element on the beam does not need to be different to the flight element in the acro series. If the gymnast performs flic flac to 1 foot, flic flac to 2 feet back salto dismount she will receive o 0.3 for the 2 flight acro series and 0.3 for the connected series dismount STEP 9 and 10 D+ value element may be awarded more than once for different D value elements Connection of add in any you think we may come across C+C (dance) B+C (Mixed) A+C (Turns) Series Bonus (SB) B+B+B (dance/mixed/acro) Split change leap split change ¼ turn Split change leap - split change ½ turn Split change leap flic flac Split jump back salto Full turn with leg horizontal full turn Flic flac flic flac salto backward with full twist 6

Floor General An acro line consists of a minimum of 2 directly connected flight elements one of which must be a salto The dismount salto must be within an acro line The dismount is the last counting acro line (award the highest salto Difficulty Value in that acro line) If only one acro line is performed, the gymnast will not have a dismount o count 1 less skill in the DV and o D panel takes a deduction of -0.5 for no dismount All acrobatic elements not performed in an acro line eg. front layout, will be awarded value only if they are performed before the dismount acro line Any single acro element performed after the last counting acro line will NOT be counted for DV or CR dance skills may be performed after the dismount If the gymnast fails to land feet first from the salto in an acro line, the salto will have no DV but will still be considered an acro line. If the gymnast only has 2 acro lines and failure to land feet first in the salto occurs in her second acro line she will receive no DV for the salto but will not be deducted for no dismount. If the gymnast has no second acro line or fails to land her dismount salto feet first so has no dismount, she must still count the value of 3 acro skills in the DV.STEPs 7 and 8 - A backward salto in stretched position with LA Twist will satisfy CR#2 Composition Requirements CR 1 is the dance series CR 4 saltos in backward and forward directions - (not aerials) in the same or different acro line o the saltos must be within acro line(s) they cannot be an individual element eg front layout o An aerial cartwheel or aerial walkover cannot fulfil the forward requirement CR 2 STEP 7 and 8 CR2 Requirement Acro line with a back salto stretched * s Note *A backward salto in stretched position with LA Twist will satisfy CR#2 CR 3 CR3 Requirement s STEP 7 Acro line with 2 saltos same or different Front salto tucked x 2 Front salto RO FF back salto RO whip back - FF back salto STEP 8 Acro line with 2 different saltos Layout front salto tucked front salto Front salto RO FF back salto RO whip back - FF back salto These above 2 CRs could be satisfied in 2 acro lines RO-FF-back salto stretched and Handspring front salto OR 1 acro line Front salto RO FF - back salto stretched 7

If the gymnast combines both requirements in 1 acro line then she must have a second acro line otherwise she will not have a dismount and incur a deduction of -0.5 count 1 less element in D score -0.5 for no dismount Difficulty Bonus STEP 7 Bonus Acro line with B+ salto Salto backward ½ twist or more Salto forward stretched ± twist Salto forward tucked with 1/1 twist Arabian salto Direct salto connection A+A Salto forward tucked - Salto forward tucked Whip salto Salto backward tucked/stretched Connected series with 2 bonuses Salto forward stretched Salto forward tucked Whip salto - Salto backward with 1/1 twist o 0.3 for direct connection o 0.3 for B value salto STEP 8 Bonus Acro line with C+ salto Salto backward 1½ twist or more Salto forward layout 1/1 twist or more Whip salto ½ twist (not at end of acro line) Direct salto connection A+B Salto forward stretched Salto forward tucked Whip salto - Salto backward with 1/1 twist Whip salto Arabian salto Salto backward ½ twist Salto forward Whip salto ½ twist - Salto forward Arabian salto Salto forward Connected series with 2 bonuses Salto forward stretched front salto 1/1 twist Whip salto - Salto backward with 1½ twist or more Salto backward 1½ twist Salto forward o 0.3 for direct connection o 0.3 for B value salto STEP 9 Bonus D or higher value Double back salto tucked or piked element Salto backward 2½ twist Salto forward 2/1 twist D value turn/leap/jump Direct salto connection A+C Salto forward stretched 1/1 twist Salto forward tucked Whip salto - Salto backward with 1½ twist or more Salto backward 1½ twist Salto forward Whip salto 1/1 twist - Salto backward Connected series with 2 bonuses Salto backward 2½ twist Salto forward o 0.3 for direct connection o 0.3 for B value salto 8

STEP 10 Bonus D or higher value element (different to CR#3) Direct salto connection B+C or C+B Double back salto tucked or piked (only if CR#3 is double front or arabian double salto) Salto backward 2½ twist Salto forward 2/1 twist D value turn/leap/jump Salto forward stretched Salto forward stretched 1/1 twist Whip salto ½ twist - Salto forward stretched with 1/1 twist Salto backward 1½ twist Salto forward stretched Whip salto 1/1 twist - Salto backward 1/1 twist Arabian salto - Salto forward stretched 1/1 twist 9

Dance Elements Only 1 leap/jump with the same number (in the same box) will be awarded DV BB - Turns in side or cross position are the same and will be awarded DV once BB - Jumps in side position will be awarded one DV higher than in cross position but only if the same jump is performed in side and cross position only the first performed will be awarded DV Evaluation of form in leaps/jumps Rather than taking a deduction for every fault look at the overall performance and judge as -0.1 small error -0.3 more than 1 error or medium error -0.5 many errors or 1 large error Also take any height and landing deductions precision -0.1 the element must have a clear start and finish position, each phase of movement must demonstrate perfect control BB Split Leap For the split leap to be awarded B value it cannot be performed with a bent front leg/developpé technique the front leg must be straight. If a developpé technique is used the leap will be awarded A value. 10
