2008 Recipient Youth Achievement Award Claire Powell The Woodlands, Texas 6 This year s recipient of the Foundation s Youth Achievement Award is Claire Powell from The Woodlands, Texas.
Youth Newsletter Established! 7 The Foundation s The Orderly Report and We Proceeded On link our membership with 40+ chapters, with scholars, and with heritage institutions around the world. For decades, we have longed to offer a similar publication to our younger members. Well... one of our younger members did just that! On her own initiative, Claire approached the Foundation about creating a Youth Newsletter and agreed to a two-year commitment to serve as its Co-Editor. Claire learned a design/layout computer program and demonstrated outstanding creativity in developing both the content and layout of the newsletter. She also came up with the idea of a contest to give this new newsletter a name. The result was Seaman Says. Seaman Says is everything We Proceeded On is for a younger generation! The stories are historically accurate, the puzzles challenging, and the information sensitive to the people and the landscape. The future of our Foundation is in good hands with young members like Claire Powell!
Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation Youth Achievement Award Presented to Claire Powell FOR YOUR INITIATIVE AND OUTSTANDING CREATIVITY IN DEVELOPING THE FOUNDATION S YOUTH NEWSLETTER August 11, 2008 Great Falls, Montana 8 Claire, it is with pleasure that we present to you our Foundation s 2008 Youth Achievement Award. 9 Chapter Award 9 In the Chapter Award Category
2008 Recipient Chapter Award Rochejhone Chapter Billings, Montana 10 Our first recipient of the Foundation s Chapter Award is the Rochejhone Chapter in Billings, Montana.
Clark on the Yellowstone 11 The Rochejhone Chapter has worked hard to support the Foundation s mission through it s extensive community involvement in the Billings area by telling the "Clark on the Yellowstone" story and by helping to preserve and protect key sites along the trail, including Pompey s Pillar. The Chapter generously shares their expertise in area schools, during community events, and at Pompey s Pillar. Their large, museum-like display of the wildlife the Corp s described is popular, and can often be seen at Logan Airport in Billings,. Children will tell you their favorite part of the Chapter s exhibit is the hands-on display that allows them to make a rubbing of Clark s signature, as it appears on Pompey s Pillar. The chapter has found corporate sponsorship for their three publications a brochure called Discover Pompey s Pillar, a coloring book called My Story as Told By Sacagawea, and a 12 page newspaper, William Clark s Yellowstone Legacy. This sponsorship allows the chapter to distribute their publications free-of-charge. The Rochejhone Chapter s long-standing partnership with Pompey s Pillar, providing programs and expertise for local communities, and their efforts to protect the Pompey.s Pillar historic view shed have been exemplary. NEXT SLIDE
Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation Chapter Award Presented to the Rochejhone Chapter FOR YOUR EXTENSIVE COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT IN TELLING THE CLARK ON THE YELLOWSTONE STORY AND CREATING GREATER AWARENESS AND APPRECIATION OF THE LEWIS AND CLARK EXPEDITION August 11, 2008 Great Falls, Montana 12 Accepting this award on behalf of the Chapter is the Chapter President, Myrtle Hubley. Myrtle, it is with pleasure that we present to you our Foundation s Chapter Award. Would you come forward please. The citation on the Rochejhone Chapter s Award reads as follows FOR YOUR... Congratulations Myrtle!
2008 Recipient Chapter Award Lone Star Chapter Spring, Texas 13 Our next recipient of the Chapter Award is the Lone Star Chapter of Spring, Texas.
Long Sought Foundation Goal Becomes Reality Projects Video Guide 14 Deep in the heart of Texas, the Lone Star Chapter has taken the Foundation s goals of creative partnerships, youth membership, and education and recreation to a new level of story telling and trail stewardship. Starting small, the Chapter created a daylong series of Corps of Discovery-related activities for a local Wolf Cub Pack. Young Scout members earned a belt loop for their work with maps and compasses, and an academic pin for their study of American Indian lore. The chapter then developed a detailed how-to program to help other Foundation chapters with these projects. The program even included DVD video demonstrations. Next the Chapter developed a proposal to partner with our Foundation and presented it to the Boy Scouts of America. Led by the Lone Star Chapter, the Foundation now has a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding with a national youth organization, the Boy Scouts of America. In partnership, the two organizations will develop creative trail stewardship projects and activities, emphasize historic accuracy and cultural understanding, and encourage youth leadership. The Chapter s easy-to-use DVD video and written material should encourage other chapters and heritage organizations to develop the same kinds of partnerships and activities at the local level.
Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation Chapter Award Presented to the Lone Star Chapter FOR YOUR LEADERSHIP IN FORMING THE PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE FOUNDATION AND THE BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA WHICH SIGNIFICANTLY CONTRIBUTES TO THE FOUNDATION S ENDEAVORS TO DEVELOP EDUCATION AND TRAIL STEWARDSHIP PROGRAMS FOR YOUTH August 11, 2008 Great Falls, Montana 15 Accepting this award on behalf of the Chapter is the Chapter Vice President, Steve Powell Steve, it is with extreme pleasure that we present to you today our Foundation s Chapter Award Would you please come forward. The citation on the Lone Star Chapter s Award reads as follows FOR YOUR... Congratulations Steve!
Distinguished Service Award 16 Our last category of award is the Distinguished Service Award
2008 Recipient Distinguished Service Award Rose Oleson Townsend, MT 17 The first recipient is Rose Oleson from Townsend, Montana.
The Corps of Discovery in the Townsend Valley 18 Over the last decade, Rose Oleson has provided exemplary leadership in telling and preserving the L&C story in the Townsend area. She is a founding member of the Crimson Bluffs Chapter (formed in 1998). She facilitated and promoted the education of chapter members, youth, and the general public through research, prominent L&C speaker programs and scholars, public exhibits, and living history demonstrations. The family-oriented events brought the story to hundreds of would-be explorers, children, and educators. Rose led the effort to have the Crimson Bluffs geological feature designated as a state historical site and protect it for future generations by working with two land trust/conservation organizations and the BLM to bring it into public ownership and administration. She led the development of a 17-point self-guided auto tour and related material for the Expedition s route through the Townsend Valley. This included a colorful, well researched, and informative brochure and the design, development, and placement of interpretive markers. Rose led the effort to have the US Board on Geographic Names and the Montana Board on Geographic Names officially rename a group of islands in the Missouri near Townsend as Yorks Islands, as designated by Clark on his map of the area. She also led the effort to have the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks rename a local fishing access site near Yorks Islands the Yorks Island Fishing Access Site. Rose s leadership of the Crimson Bluffs Chapter has indeed shown her to be a keeper of the story and steward of the trail in the Townsend Valley!
Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation Distinguished Service Award Presented To Rose Oleson FOR YOUR MANY YEARS OF LEADERSHIP IN TELLING AND PRESERVING THE LEWIS AND CLARK STORY IN THE TOWNSEND VALLEY. YOUR EFFORTS HAVE SIGNIFICANTLY FURTHERED THE PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES OF THE FOUNDATION. August 11, 2008 Great Falls, Montana 19 Rose, in recognition of your many years of leadership with the Crimson Bluffs Chapter in the Townsend Valley, it is with pleasure that we present to you today our Distinguished Service Award. Please come forward The citation on Rose s award reads as follows FOR YOUR... Congratulations Rose!
2008 Recipient Distinguished Service Award Don Peterson Great Falls, MT 20 The next recipient of the Distinguished Service Award is Don Peterson of Great Falls, Montana.
Some of Don s Recent Contributions Helping with the placement of benches in the Lower Portage Staging Area Interpretative Site Don being recognized by Portage Route Chapter President Harry Mitchell (right) at the 2007 William P. Sherman Breakfast Assisting in the placement of interpretative signage at the Upper Portage Interpretive Site Don and Bob Bergantino (a 2006 William P. Sherman Lecture Series Presenter) 21 For nearly two decades, Don as supported the mission of the Foundation in a wide range of capacities. Because of his wealth of knowledge of the L&C story, especially in the Great Falls area, he is frequently sought out by a wide range of individuals and organizations for historical information, to lead tours, guide dignitaries, and to coordinate special events such as the William P. Sherman lecture series and the seminar associated with the Great Falls Lewis & Clark Festival. As a member of the Portage Route Chapter, Don has held all of it s officer positions and for many years served as the grant writer and manager for the Chapter. He has also served as the chapter s archival historian. Don has provided assistance to the USDA s Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail (LCNHT) Interpretative Center in documenting the Great Falls Portage Historical Landmark. He researched and wrote most of the text for the Portage Route brochure and interpretative signage and helped to install it. Don routinely and unselfishly shares his knowledge with others. He is a quite person who always steps forward to get the most onerous and tedious of tasks done. As an example, during the bicentennial, he assembled the historical material, prepared tour maps, crafted most of the tour scripts, and helped coordinate the training of tour guides for the Explore the Big Sky National Signature Event. From the Foundation s annual meetings to the William P. Sherman Lecture Series, the Lewis and Clark Festival, and the Big Sky Signature Event, Don has indeed provided years of distinguished service.
Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation Distinguished Service Award Presented To Don Peterson FOR YOUR MANY YEARS OF EXEMPLARY SERVICE... IN CREATING HISTORIC DOCUMENTATION, LEADING TOURS, COORDINATING SPECIAL EVENTS... AND GENEROUSLY SHARING YOUR EXTENSIVE KNOWLEDGE WITH OTHERS. YOUR EFFORTS HAVE GREATLY FURTHERED THE PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES OF THE FOUNDATION. August 11, 2008 Great Falls, Montana 22 Don, in recognition of your many years of exemplary service, it is with pleasure that we present to you today our Distinguished Service Award. Please come forward The citation on Don s award reads as follows FOR YOUR... Congratulations Don! This concludes the presentation of Awards. However, the Committee would like to leave you with one final thought...
