Make Your Own Bundled canes Revision Date: May 2014 Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) Summary: License: Do It Yourself (DIY) Kink is a great way 1) customize your toys, 2) know your tools, and 3) potentially save money for other items in your toy bag. For those concerned with fluid bonding, making your own bundled canes provides a known (safe) history for the toys. This project is intended to produce one set of simple, useful, and inexpensive bundled canes. After materials are assembled, the project can be completed in about 2 hours (plus drying time) by a person with basic crafting experience. Completion time varies with amount of preparation before the event. Safe and controlled use of bundled canes (a type of impact play) requires practice. Please seek out an experienced person to learn basic skills and always play consensually. The designs presented here are a synthesis of several commercially available products located through the internet. We will be making a set bundled canes with up to a 30 overall length using pre-made bamboo rods. A tie can be adjusted on the length of the rods to change the feel from splashy (tie at handle) to solid (tie at tip end). The photos below show multiple styles of bundled canes. The left set is birch, the center set is cane (taketaba), and the last set is metal (tetsutaba). Projects are intended to be completed in a group setting as an event. The organizers purchase (after a prepaid order) and provide material kits for all participants. This process allows less experienced DIY kinksters to be successful and lowers cost (through volume purchase discounts). The crafter has the opportunity to choose rod length (up to 30 ) and handle wrap color. The prepaid fee provides: Materials for 2 bundled canes, Instructions (electronic document), space and time for assembly, and a bundled canes basic usage demonstration. The crafter also enjoys the community, working together, and bragging rights for the new toys. Outline Agenda for event day: Bundled canes introduction history, safety, example toys, leather care Setup and Assembly Demonstration Make your bundled canes(s) Bundled canes usage demonstration Page 1 of 7 Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) Alan Smithee
The image below shows prepared kits for 18 sets of bundled canes (36 total bundles). Preparation Method: Purchase and inventory materials Cut paracord handle wrap to length (12, melt ends) Cut paracord wrist strap to length (2, melt ends) Distribute materials to kit bags Assembly Each bundled canes kit (makes 2 finished bundled canes) should contain the following items: 40 (forty) 31 bamboo rods (4-5 mm diameter), 2 sets of spares o Note: Rattan or plastic rods may also be chosen 2 paracord handle wrap laces (12 each) 2 paracord wrist strap laces (2 each) 2 hair ties (non-metal joint) 1 roll electrical tape Consumables: Each crafter should also have access to glue (white school glue works), marker (felt pen), and 4 rubber bands. Tools: yardstick, cutting board, cutting tool (box cutters, X-Acto knife), Sharp scissors (cut electrical tape) Page 2 of 7 Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) Alan Smithee
Method: Inventory kit contents for completeness Prepare bamboo rods o Place all 40 bamboo rods into a loose bundle o Select out the 2 worst rods twisted, damaged, splintered, etc. o Separate good rods into 2 sets of 19 each o Determine desired length for each bundle (e.g. 30 and 18 ) o Mark the best section length for each rod using a marker If possible, use factory end (already cut) Best is round, smooth, and uniform o Using cutting tool, cut each rod to length o Form up both 19 rod bundles, tap onto flat surface, and look for long rods Cut long rods to correct length Build cane bundles o Place 1 rubber bands plus hair tie around one bundle of 19 canes Rubber bands define handle end of bundle Rubber bands should hold bundle into hexagon cross section Rubber band should be 6 from handle end Hair tie should be about 1 from tip end of bundle Tap rod bundle on table so ends line up at handle end o Glue the handle together. Note: Glue prevents interior rods from sliding out. Glue section should be centered about 2.5 from handle end Glue section should be about ½ long Glue should touch all 19 rods (manipulate bundle with hand to spread) Page 3 of 7 Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) Alan Smithee
o Tap rod bundle on table so ends line up at handle end Add second rubber band about 1 from handle end Rods should form a hexagon (6 flat sides of 3 rods per side). Spread excess glue evenly into rod faces Place initial handle tape in place Wrap 2 full turns of electrical tape at base of handle Wrap 2 full turns of electrical tape at 5 from base of handle Allow bundled canes glue to dry for 60 minutes o Complete tape handle Remove rubber bands Cover the exposed handle butt Cut ~2 of electrical tape Apply tape over about 2/3rds of the butt face Snip tape with scissors toward corners of butt face Page 4 of 7 Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) Alan Smithee
Fold down tape tabs onto existing electrical tape wrap Repeat tape coverage with one more 2 tape strip so complete butt face is covered with electrical tape. Wrap handle with electrical tape in a clockwise direction (tennis handle wrap) Press tape onto each handle face squarely Pull tape tight as you circle the handle Lay wrist strap on opposite faces of the handle Wrap handle again with electrical tape in counter clockwise direction Capture the wrist strap with the first turn of tape Keep wrist strap aligned on the handle face center as tape is applied o Apply paracord handle wrap Page 5 of 7 Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) Alan Smithee
Loosely wrap 4 turns of paracord around the handle and note length Make a loop with the free end about 1.5 in diameter Using the free end, wrap the cord around the loop 4 times Massage the wrapped loop so the cord is evenly spread Place the loop on the handle at the end of the tape (about 5 from handle butt) with both free ends pointing toward the handle butt. Working both paracord ends, pull the loop tight around the handle. Keep the wrapped loop as even as possible. The short free end should be about 1 and point toward the handle butt Wrap the long free end around the handle (tennis handle wrap) The wraps should cover the short free end Keep the wraps tight, adjacent, and uniform Continue wrapping until about ½ from handle butt end Use a rubber band to hold last wrappings in place Using the paracord free end, form another wrapped loop Remove rubber band while keeping wrapping tight Place wrapped loop on handle and tighten, keeping wraps even and tight Cut excess paracord free end should have about ½ exposed Using a lighter, carefully melt the free end into a plastic button that locks the final wrap in place Page 6 of 7 Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) Alan Smithee
Clean your work space and remove all trash to trash bins. Enjoy. Follow-On Activities (optional): Lock wrapped loops into place with glue o Hang bundle by wrist strap and apply a thick bead of white glue at the edge of the wrapped loop by the electrical tape. Use a toothpick to ensure the glue penetrates the edges. Allow to dry. o Apply a thick bead of white glue at the edge of the wrapped loop toward the tip end. Use a toothpick to ensure the glue penetrates the edges. Place the butt end of the bundle on the ground so the tips are at top and the bundle is close to vertical. Allow to dry. Finish individual rod ends 1. Wrap with shrink wrap and apply heat for a colorful set of rod ends, or 2. Spread tip ends using toothpicks about 6 from tip ends. Dip tip ends into polyurethane to form a bead then allow to dry while hanging by the wrist strap Condition the rods with oil o Remove hair tie o Apply mineral (or linseed) oil to exposed rods. Work into all rods by massaging the bundle. o Remove excess oil with a clean cloth o Hang bundle by wrist strap and allow oil to penetrate for 48 hours. Place newspaper or a drop cloth under the hanging bundles. Page 7 of 7 Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) Alan Smithee
