I first want to thank you for choosing me as your Lodge Chief for this year, I will do my best to serve well in this great opportunity. Otherwise remember that for those of you that were unable to go to either the Spring Fellowship or the Fall Conclave, there are opportunities for you to still receive your brotherhood at any of our Brotherhood Bashes! Finally, I'm thoroughly looking forward to seeing you guys at our winter banquet where we will look back on all the things we have accomplished and celebrate a fantastic year. Sincerely, Dan K. This newsletter is available to all active Order of the Arrow members in the lodge and is distributed to all registered, due-paying brothers. 2 FROM THE LEC: LETTERS FROM THE MEMBERS OF THE LODGE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE Bobby S. Vice Chief of Activities Dear brothers, Though the year has just started, I am looking forward to serving you as your Vice Chief of Activities for the year. I am fortunate to have the examples of previous Vice Chiefs of Activities, Thomas A. and Mark S., to help me perform my duties. I look forward to great times and a great year ahead. Alex C. Vice Chief of Administration Lodge members, I am glad to be your next Vice Chief of Administration. I have many goals and plans to help grow our lodge and take it forward into the future. I would like to give you some history about myself as to let you know who I am. I first started scouting when I was a Tiger Cub Scout, I finished Cub Scouts with getting my Arrow of Light and then joining Troop 305. There, I have earned my Eagle, been inducted into the Order, and have earned my Vigil Honor through dedication to the Lodge and scouting. I was inducted in the spring of 2006 and ever since then I have given service to the Lodge be it that I was Gokhos Chapter Chief, Lodge Secretary, or now Vice Chief. One event that I will host as Vice Chief of Administration is known as the Lodge Leadership Development (LLD). I invite all members, youth or adult to join us at this event. We will be taking a look at different training cells that will help you grow as a member as well how the lodge can grow. The date of the LLD will be November 10th, 2012, and it will be held at the Rockford Career College. We will have flyers sent out and there will be more information on a later date. Just remember stay classy Wulapeju! Nick M. Secretary My fellow OA members, I am very grateful for the opportunity to be the next Secretary. It is an exciting new experience, as it is my first official position in the Order of the Arrow. I look forward to the challenges that come with this position, but I especially look forward to the opportunity to give back in cheerful service. I don t think there s a much better way of cheerfully serving than as a member of the LEC. This summer, I had the opportunity to work alongside and encourage the Ordeal candidates as a ceremonialist, a member of the Canyon Camp staff, and as a sort of unofficial assistant to the taskmaster at the Fall Conclave. Every time I have the opportunity to witness the cheerful service the candidates perform, I understand more of the importance of what this organization stands for. I hope that, as secretary, I can do my part in service to the OA and help my fellow brothers do the same. Will C. Treasurer Hello everybody, Hope you had a fun time at Fall Conclave. I thank you for voting me into this position and hope that this year will be a great one for the lodge. 3 FROM THE CHAPTERS: LETTERS FROM THE CHAPTER CHEIFS Andrew G. Gokhos Hello Fellow Arrowmen, I am Andrew, the newly elected Chapter Chief for the Gokhos Chapter, and I am really excited to be elected into this position. Just a little bit about me is I am a sophomore in high school, and part of the swim team there. School work and organization are really important to me, and success is achieved by this. Our Brotherhood Bash and appreciation day is October 6th at Camp Lowden. Some plans that I have while the Chapter Chief is to increase attendance in Lodge events, to better influence and inspire the people in both the Chapter and Lodge, and to become a better Arrowman myself. It is going to be a time hoping to see you all at the next LEC. Sincerely, Andrew G. Gokhos Chapter Chief Sam P. Kishwaukee Hello Kishwaukee Chapter my name is Sam P. and I will be serving as your Chapter Chief for the season. I am a Brotherhood member and an Eagle Scout, and I am really looking forward to serving you guys as Chapter Chief. I feel honored to have been elected. I am really excited about hearing your guy s opinions on how we can make the chapter better. Also our chapter is really close to getting Journey to Excellence. All we need is about 25 more Brotherhood conversions. Any one who has been an Ordeal member for ten months or more can help with this by attending the Brotherhood Bash on October 20th at the Nunda Township Offices in Crystal Lake. The Brotherhood Bash is a one-day event that you can seal your membership at in just a few hours. It s a perfect event for all of you that were unable to do your Brotherhood conversion at Fall Conclave. Yours in WWW Sam P. Mark V. Mawat Hello every one I am Mark V. for all of you who don t know. I am the Mawat chapter chief. I am hoping to have a good term and to make our chapter be successful. Our new officers are Sam M. as Vice Chief and our secretary is Paul W. I am hoping to rekindle a conservation project that I had brought up a month ago. I will get more information on that later. Also for the people in our chapter that don t know where we meet this is it, Christ United Methodist Church off of Alpine in Rockford, every second Thursday. So try to attend all the meetings you can. Also I want to address everyone on a challenge from our old lodge chief, Mark S. This challenge is to make a ceremony team for Brotherhood and Ordeal ceremonies by Spring Fellowship. Also I want to tell all OA troop reps. to try and come to our meetings to try and get our numbers up. On my final note I am honored that you have voted me into this position and that you have faith in me to do a good job. Thank you. Continued on next page 4

4 FROM THE CHAPTERS: CONTINUED Josh R. Wulowachtauwoapin Our next chapter meeting will be held on September 23rd. The date had been moved back due to Cheese Days in Monroe this year. We decided that having 60,000 people packed in our usual 10,000 people population would make things difficult to hold our usual meeting. The following chapter meeting is on October 21st, which will be held in on Platteville. We will be having our Brotherhood Bash October 27th, at the Monroe Kiwanis Youth Cabin. Upcoming chapter events include a co-chapter campout with Wetassa chapter. The finer details are being worked out currently between the two chapters. Ben R. Wetassa I would like to thank my chapter for electing me as Chapter Chief and the opportunity for service that comes with it. I look forward to a great year ahead for the Wetassa chapter, and I hope that I can follow in the footsteps of my predecessors who have done tremendous jobs. Sincerely, Ben R. Some of the activities that the dance team would do are; dancing, drumming, singing, making regalia, and of course, fellowship! On June 27th, 1868, Hole in the Day the younger (Bagone-gihig) left Crow Wing, Minnesota, for Washington DC, to fight the planned removal of the Mississippi Ojibwe to a reservation at White Earth. Several miles from his home, the self styled leader of all the Ojibwe was stopped by at least 12 Ojibwe men and fatally shot. Hole in the Day s Death was national news, and rumors of its cause were many personally jealousies, retribution for his claiming to be Head Chief of the Ojibwe, retaliation for the attacks he formented in 1862 or reprisal for his attempts to keep mixed blood Ojibwe off the White Earth Reservation. In his biography, The Assassination of Hole in the Day, Anton Treuer focuses on the interactions with other tribes, the role of Ojibwe culture and tradition, and interviews with more than fifty elders to further explain the events leading up to the death of Hole in the Day. Treuer reveals the life of a powerful leader, and an insightful analysis of a pivotal time in the history of Ojibwe People. Kellen P. American Indian Heritage Chair 6
