1 Newsletter of the Northern Virginia Bonsai Society July 2012 Hot, Hot, Hot what a start to July. Between the storm that knocked out the electricity and the 100 degree days, it s been quite a start to July. We hope everyone is out in the yard checking those trees and watering frequently. My suggestion is not to worry about root rot right now but to error on overwatering. In my yard, many of the small trees that are in small clay pots can dry out quickly. My Japanese maples also hate getting too dry. Keep those trees wet or at least moist in this heat. For the July meeting, we have Julian Adams on the program. Julian will be talking about pines and the care for pines. He s an excellent teacher and he brings the best and most prepared presentation of any of the speakers that we invite. After the meeting, Julian will work with people on the trees that they bring. Although Julian is great with pines ( know the growth cycle ) and azaleas, he s great with any material. The August meeting will feature Jack Sustic who is the curator of the national collection at the Bonsai and Penjing Museum at the National Arboretum. He will be discussing group plantings and a workshop with Jack will follow the talk. September is the time for our wonderful and relaxing annual picnic. It s a picnic, but it s also a BYOT workshop where people bring trees to work on and get advice from other members. Eat, work on trees, eat, work on trees, and repeat as necessary is a great recipe for a Bonsai club s picnic. Even if you don t bring a tree, many people just sit around and tell amusing and tall A Tree from the 2012 ABS Event in Denver tales about trees. It s a good time. Directions to Lewis and Olga s beautiful house in the country are on page 5. As a recap to last month s meeting, we had Stephen Ash and Chuck Croft taking turns and talking about maples. They talked about growing, working on, and all other things about maples. There were lots of good questions and discussion. Our best meetings seem to be when everyone contributes little bits and pieces of knowledge into the discussion and it adds up to a good meeting.

2 The Rocky Mountain Bonsai Society and the American Bonsai Society (ABS) hosted Visions of the American West from June 21-24, The weekend brought top talent from all over the world to the beautiful Rocky Mountains and the Mile High City, Denver Colorado. Stephen Ash, Joseph Gutierrez and former NVBS member Scott Noteboom all attended the weekend of festivities. Also attending from PBA was John Ruth from the Baltimore club. The weekend featured workshops, demonstrations, a vending area, raffles, an exhibit by the local clubs and more. The workshop instructors were excellent and included Marc Noelanders, Dan Robinson, Ryan Neil, John Kirby, Young Chloe, Harold Sasaki, Jim Doyle, and Larry Jackel. The retired Tom Elias (former director of the National Arboretum) was also a speaker and hosted an excellent collection of his stones. The best part of the event was the great talent coupled with the excellent material that the Rocky Mountain Bonsai Society provided. I ve never been to an event with so much rich and collected material; it was the talk of the show. The first three pictures are from the Douglas Fir workshop I attended with Marc Noelanders. Marc is a great artist and visionary. What came out of the workshop that started with a simple tree was amazing. The last picture is a Colorado Blue Spruce that I worked on with Harold Sasaki. Much more work needs to be done on it. Harold was an excellent teacher and stressed the important of getting the first branch set. We ran out of time in the workshop, so you can see in the fourth picture that the first branch is set nicely and the rest of the tree still needs more work. More from the Exhibit at Denver 2

Stay on 29 until you approach Warrenton. Drive on 29 South for about 15 to 20 minutes. (About 11 miles if using Exit 43A or 8 miles if joining Rte 29 at Rte 15). Approaching Warrenton, Route 29 South widens to multiple lanes: (Stay to the right) 29 regular (2 lanes) go left, while 29 Business (2 lanes) goes straight ahead and a fifth lane on the far right is the ramp for 17 North. Drive about 2 or 3 minutes, about 2.5 miles until you see a sign on the right indicating 10 miles to Marshall and also mileage to Paris and Winchester. Ahead on the left is Ben and Mary s Steakhouse. Immediately past that is Keith Road / Rte 628. and follow until it T s into Cannonball Gate Road. Still Rte 628. About 1 mile / about 2 minutes.. Follow road, about 2 miles and 4 minutes. It makes a sharp bend to the right and a sharp bend to the left. You ll see winery signs at Falcon Glen Road. Keep going to next road which is Meadows Road, which T s from the right. Mail Box on right with name and number, but driveway to house is on the left. Drive on up. You are here!. Most GPS bring you in a different way. The above is better 5
