Suncoast Youth Conservation Center: Bob Preston thanked Pam Tebbetts and Buddy Prosser for overseeing our cub s volunteer support at the Suncoast Youth Conservation Center. Terry Ricket and Bob have both provided support to the Center. There are several other days when help will be needed. Bob pointed out that the help is needed at 7am. Its hot and its buggy but help is needed nonetheless. It only takes about an hour to get the morning kayak trips set up. Volunteers do not have to participate in the actual kayak trips. Freedom Boat Club Fishing Education Program: This program generated a lot more interest than what was expected. 4 August 2015 Hook, Line and Sinker Page 4 You can t keep a good fisherman down! As many of us know, Tom Deptula had been in Tampa General Hospital for some time. In fact prior to his recent release, he chalked up some 60 days there. During one of those days, between all of the rain we have had in Tampa Bay area, while in his rehabilitation program, he went fishing off of one of the patios there. We don t know where he got the rod and reel, (Medicare?) but here is one catfish that didn t get away. Tom is home now and continuing to improve. We are all looking forward to seeing him at a club meeting soon. Recent Survey Results Shortly after our last meeting in July, a survey was sent to all members in an effort to gather information regarding what the club should be doing. A synopsis of the responses is shown below. The Program and Education Committees will use this information as an outline for planning future activities by the club. Anyone with other ideas not limited to the subjects shown below are encouraged to send them to our address: CastAwayAnglersFL@gmail.com. Guest Speakers: What subjects would you like to see future speakers discuss? Cast Net throwing; Knot Tying, Boater Safety Course. One suggestion was to show where some of the locations are that are often referred to at our meeting: Whiskey Point, The Kitchen, The Cabbage Patch, etc. Do you have any recommendations for guest speakers? Neil Taylor can speak on fishing the Tampa Bay market as well as how to fish out of Kayaks. The link is as Also check out this link: Fishing Outings: Have a combo picnic and fishing at Simmons Park to include wade fishing and fishing from the banks. Have another Freedom Boat Club members and boat owners combination for a fishing trip in the bay. Are there specific head boats, locations or facilities you would like to see the club use? Probably the Eddie Lee for a local head boat. The Flying Fish fleet out of Sarasota they have full galleys and inside seating, Continued on Page 5
5 Page 5 Continued from page 4 Dinners (You gotta eat!): Sunset Grill at Little Harbor; Sandpiper Grill, Sun City Center; Ybor Grill, Ruskin; Circle s, Apollo Beach; Apollo's Bistro, Apollo Beach. What do you want to do? The trip to Costa Rica was a wonderful idea that could be used as an example for other trips. Some trips could be a little closer to home, but would be over night and involve guides. A trip would probably be 4 to 8 folks. Possibilities that come to mind include - going after sailfish in the Keys, going after bass in Okeechobee, going on a 6-person charter boat for snapper, going to the Bahamas, going to Alaska for salmon or Halibut. A survey is recommended to determine if members would be interested in these kinds of trips. Fishing Rod Rack -- Found on Facebook This is for all you fishing addicts out there. When the season ends and the gear comes out of the truck, where do you store your rods? (Whoever wrote his doesn t live in Florida where the season never ends!) You can buy a fancy storage rack or make one of your own. But either way, you're giving up precious wall space until spring. Here's a quick solution: Screw short sections of wire shelving to your ceiling. If the handles don't fit, just clip out some of the wire with bolt cutters. Your poles will be safely out of the way until your next fishing trip.
