We are having some really mild temp s for July from what I remember in past years. I understand next week is going to be in the low 80 s again. I haven t even had time to get my Yak 108 turbine running again. I want to switch out the fuel pump from another airplane, but just can t seem to fit that in. I keep thinking that all the mowing and job cleanup is going to slow down, but it hasn t happened. Of course, the Jayhawk Float Fly was a pleasant break from other things. And speaking of the Float Fly, here is my take on it. 1

2 Jayhawk Float Fly Here is the Super Cub by George Jones early in the morning before the clouds had cleared out making for a beautiful day. Greg Kloepper was available this year and was seen flying his Lanier Mariner powered with a Thunder Tiger 1.20 The most popular float plane seems to be a Cub, and here is another of George.s Cub s on floats: 2

3 The weather forecast was not good with an 80% chance of rain all day. But, as I was driving out to the lake about 7:00 that morning, the weather radar was showing a break in the clouds. It looked like the old Tonganoxie Split again. The clouds to the south went south and those to the north went north, and we were just sitting there with one beautiful day. We had 15 pilots, and one that came as far as Jeff City, MO. Patrick Deuser didn t have an airplane that was flyable but he brought an almost extinct FlightCraft Boat that was very entertaining. Darrel Watts from Olathe still didn t have the motor situation corrected on his giant Grumman Widgeon, but came to fly his Polaris foamy. Pat McGee and Darrel were seen flying a pair of Polari in formation. It looks like they are ready to go to battle in the photo below: Like I said the FlightCraft boat driven by Patrick Deuser is entertaining, but the photo below doesn t really give you a sense of the speed: 3

4 Probably my favorite aircraft was this 112 Aero Works Bravata flown by Charlie Swain from Shawnee, KS. I believe he also flew this one at our float fly last year. Aero Works offers this aircraft with matching floats. It is powered with a 30cc DLE gas motor. 4

5 June 20 Topeka Blue Sky Fly-In I left the June Club meeting a little early last month to attend the Blue Sky Fly-In. They had over 20 registered pilots as I recall, and John Dalton was on hand to fly his amazing twin Beech. Like I have mentioned before, we as club members need to make every effort we can to support events by other clubs. Like Yogi says, you need to go to other peoples funerals if you want them to come to yours. I never did get the story on this aircraft, but it looks to me like a 1918 Fokker D-8 aircraft. Bill Miller taxied it around and then put it to bed. So, that s all I got except it is a very big plane. Below is a photo of George Jones letting the smoke out of his 96 Lanier Edge 540: 5

6 Would you get a look at this, the stick is forward and the tails are both up on this pair of 1/3 scale J-3 Cubs. One by Bill Miller and one by Vernon Nelson Wow, here she comes again in all her glory. John Dalton s Navy Twin Beech Boy Howdy, if that doesn t make your putter twitter, you must not be kick n. I wanted to fly my yak-108 real bad, but couldn t get the motor to stay lit. After about a dozen startups, I had to pack it in for another day. 6

7 Just one more photo. You know, we don t always realize how aggressive of a correction we sometimes need to make when an aircraft drops a wing after takeoff, but the eye of the camera tells all. I didn t realize how far over the Beech was until I looked at this photo when I got home. New meeting Place Yes, the new meeting location will be at the 23 rd Street Hi-Vee. This is the private room just west of the deli area. So, come thru the front door, go left as far as possible, thru the dining area, and look for the last door on the right. There is an outside door on the north side of the room, but I am not sure if we are allowed to use it. See you there Sat. Club House Cleanup Sat. July 12 was the planned club house cleanup day, however, I was not able to attend. I m assuming all went well, and there were enough bodies to get it all done in a timely manner. It was a good run, having use of the 23 rd St clubhouse, but it was time to move on. We want to thank Bill and Sharon again for the use of the location over the past eight years. Oh, I just found out that we had 8 members involved in the cleanup and they were finished by 11:00 AM. Great job guys. I think it was George Jones, Bill, Al Lata, Mike Weinsaft, BC & Nick Chansaviang, Lester Smith, and Gary Webber. Jayhawk Big Bird Its hard to believe, but the Annual Jayhawk Big Bird is only 70 Days from this Sat. So, save the date for Sept. 27, and don t plan on taking a family vacation that weekend. Hopefully this one will be bigger and more fun than any before. 7

8 June 21 Club Meeting Our last club meeting at the 23 rd street clubhouse was June 21, members were in attendance. This was the day we tried to figure out what belonged to whom, and most of that worked out pretty well. Don Boucher ended up with the hand carved prop off ole Fliver, and the Larry Davidson motor went home with Hank Darnell. Since I left early, I don t know who won all the prizes. Show & Tell Nate Ericson brought an interesting model that he recently completed of a monowheel Penguin scratch-built from a 1935 EAA set of plans. The full size aircraft had an 18 wide fuse, but Nate scaled it at 24 to accommodate all the RC stuff. Nate says the US Aircorp purchased 300 of these from the mfg. The wings had wire skids, and the aircraft could takeoff by running it downhill. The model weighs in at only 2.9 lbs with battery. Rob Dewhirst came to show a foamboard aircraft design that he got online from Experimental Airlines Aircraft. This design has a 55 pusher configuration and is called the Ax-On. The fuse is folded into a 2 tube. 8
