1 Newsletter of the Truckee River Flyfishers TRF Mission Statement We are dedicated to: improving and promoting the sport of fly fishing in Nevada. Promote and encourage the conservation of game fish, especially wild trout, through the betterment of the streams and lakes everywhere. Encourage and assist our youth to become fly fishers and true sportspersons. Inside this issue: President s Letter Fly Tiers Round Table Sheep Show HD Zug Bug Prospects Members Ship Application Upcoming Events: Fly Tiers Roundtable no roundtable in Dec.. November 2016 President s Letter President s letter December 2016 As we move into December of 2016 the Truckee River is very healthy with flows at 263cfs in Reno. Some late browns are still spawning so be careful where you wade. There is good news from KTMB ( Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful) that they are planning to implement some of their planned programs. This should help with some of the trash issues that have plagued the river for years. This November Pyramid Lake produced several double digit fish, that being said, December brings in cold weather that cools the water rapidly. It should slow down the bite but the bigs can still be caught. Dress warm and grind them out! Last month Mike Sevon presented a great show on Nevada s stillwaters. He talked about South Fork Reservoir, near Elko. We have talked about a fish out at South fork in for If any members are interested please let us know. Mike Sevon will be the featured tier for the next Fly Tying Round Table. Check this newsletter for the details. Just a reminder, our Club Annual Banquet is coming up on March 11th. If you can please try to get some raffle items from your work place, friends etc. Thanks. We will be looking for new officers for 2017 so if you or someone you know would like to get involved please let us know. Thanks and good fishin, Doug O. December 2016 GM Meeting Jan 18, 2017, tech night 1100 Valley Road Sheep Show youth tying event January 19, 20, 21, 2017 BOD meeting Jan 5, Vista Blvd. Suite 100 Banquet, March 11, 2017
2 Page 2 TRF FLY TYING ROUNDTABLE The Angler s Line Due to the holiday season there is no roundtable scheduled for the month of December. In January we will combine our roundtable with our general meeting which will be our annual Tech Night. At November s roundtable I shared a few tips allowing you to tie your foam Hoppers a little easier, quicker and more durable. It was fun! I want to thank Stu Chandler, along with his wife Anne, for helping make the night a success. Enjoy the holidays. Mike O Brien. Pictures from past Sheep Show tying event.
3 Newsletter of the Truckee River Flyfishers Page 3 I sent this out in an last month, but I still need volunteers, this is a great event and right now I only have two people signed up for Saturday, January 21, and we need about 8 to 10 more. Take one day off from fishing and teach a child to tie a fly. It is really a great way to spend the day. We can use help on the 19 th and 20 th also. Hey Guys, Once again we have an invitation to tie at the Wild Sheep Show, many of you have done this in the past and we are looking for volunteers again. Please don't contact Ryan directly as he will have plenty on his plate, contact me and I will put you on the schedule and make arrangements for your passes or me. You can see from the Ryan's invitation the times and the dates that are available. I intend to be there every day and will most likely help with the setup also. Though Ryan did not say the exact times during the week assume that you will be there from 12 to 3 P.M. That will give you time for lunch and a couple of hours of tying. A big benefit is that you have access to the Sheep Show when you volunteer. NDOW has equipment and if they are short we can help with that as well. If you have some materials that you want to donate that would be great, hackle, marabou and chenille are about all we need. The biggest problem we have every year is the thread, frustrating when you have children who don't know their own strength and break the thread over and over again. This year that is not going to be a problem, I have gone to big fly thread when I teach children and it is nearly impossible to break. I will make sure that there is plenty of this on hand. If you can help, contact me and I will start a schedule. Take a look at the promotional video attached. Mr. Kwasney and myself are front and center in it. Don't let that detract you from the great video and promotional item it is. Put this on your calendar and remember the TRF Mission Statement. We are dedicated to: improving and promoting the sport of fly fishing in Nevada. Promote and encourage the conservation of game fish, especially wild trout, through the betterment of the stream and lakes everywhere. Encourage and assist our youth to become fly fishers and true sportspersons. Thanks, Tom Smith From Ryan: I am reaching out to you to see if you would like to be a part of the Youth Wildlife Conservation Experience, which your group was a part of last year. The fly tying is always so fun for the kids. This year s dates are January 19-21st, with the first two days students coming in with school groups. The 21st is open to the public. The 19-20th would have the handson stations only running for 2 hours each day starting at lunch. Saturday would run as last year from Something you are interested in? You can see this year s promotional video at Thanks for your time, Ryan Ryan Brock, Ph.D Youth Education Coordinator. Happy Holidays to all of you.
4 Page 4 The Angler s Line December 2016 Prospects Truckee River: The river has in good shape all Fall with the exception of a few high murky days after some of the rain storms we had in late October. You can probably still swing a streamer but the temps have fallen and the fish will not be as aggressive. Better choice if you want to fish is to go small. Little Truckee: Contrary to what I wrote last month the pressure has not subsided but has held steady with lots of fishers at the top parking lot! Baetis hatches mid day, and try swinging a soft hackle thru some of the tail outs. A small Brassie fished near the bottom is always a good choice. Flows have been steady at 32 cfs. Pyramid Lake: The new Nets seems to be Dago Bay. Lots of big fish have come from this end of the lake this season. Road in is rough!!! Any SUV should be able to access the whole beach. Last season at this time the middle of the lake did not produce much but I have heard of some big ones coming out of the North Nets. Seem when the sun gets off the water in the afternoon, there is a good bite. Keep moving till you find fish. Lots of things are working so change up if not getting bite on one method. Lake Davis: I was picking up a few fish in late September but have not been back there since. Guides have been talking up Frenchman instead. Frenchman Res: Last year the fishing was excellent in November, this year was no exception. Temps have dropped and some ice is forming alone the edges. I think it is just about over. Eagle Lake: This is a good place for information on Eagle Lake. The water is way down and fish are small, (16 to 18 inches). Indian Creek Res. Good time to hit this one because it is a low elevation lake and will fish well late into the fall this season Sleepers: Yuba River above the highway 20 bridge opens December 1 st. Check regs before you go I have not fished here in a long time. Ruby Marsh Collection ditch fish good in the fall before it ices up. Catchables planted in Squaw Creek. Almanor is still fishing good, cold! East Walker has had its usual consistent flows through the fall and it got a plant of brown trout just recently. 5 Newsletter of the Truckee River Flyfishers Page 5 HD ZUG BUG This pattern was created by Cliff Zug to be a Caddis fly imitation. While it works very well for that purpose, I ve found that it also works very well as a searching pattern for our local lakes. I really like this pattern because it features a lot of fish catching peacock herl. HOOK: Nymph 2X Long, Size 14 8 THREAD: White 8/0 TAIL: Peacock Swords, 3 or 4 BODY: Peacock Herl, Spirit River UV2 Peacock Natural, 2 or 3 RIB: Silver wire, Brassie WINGCASE: Mallard flank, Wood duck LEGS: Grouse Feather 1. Attach thread near eye and create a thread base back to the barb. 2. Attach 3 or 4 peacock swords with the tips extending approximately the length of the hook gap beyond the hook bend. Secure and trim excess. 3. Attach and secure silver wire at the barb. 4. Attach 2 to 3 peacock herls at the barb and secure by wrapping thread forward two eye lengths behind the eye. Trim excess. 5. Wrap peacock herl forward to the thread. Secure and trim excess. 6. Counter wrap silver wire forward, approximately 4 or 5 turns, to the thread. Secure and trim excess. 7. Prepare Grouse feather and attach by the tip at the front of the body and make 1 or 2 turns while holding hackles back. Secure and trim excess. 8. Select and prepare a nice mallard flank feather. Place mallard flank flat on top of the body with tips rearward. Attach the base of the feather by the stem and a bit up onto the fibers just behind the hook eye. This will help to center the feather and make it a more durable fly. Secure and trim excess stem. 9. Cut the tip of the mallard flank perpendicular to the body forming a short wing case. 10. Build a neat head and whip finish. I have used UV2 Peacock Herl and added a white hot spot to enhance the attraction of this pattern. Mike O Brien
