1 July 2011 Issue Editor: Carol Mathis HAPPY 4 TH OF JULY If you missed last month's meeting, you missed a good one. As always a meeting at the Penix' home is worth writing about. The BBQ was out of this world as was all the other great dishes brought by our members. We just might want to think of turning the club into a food club because it was that good. Mike Long has our web site up and running again... Check it out. Larry Rosen is going to look into doing a Saturday morning drop in at Larry O'Brian' KOI facility in Waxhaw we will do this on a weekend that we do not have a meeting. The recent pond tour was attended by several club members and a brief discussion was held on the types of ponds viewed, some were over the top - one had a waterfall fed at the rate of 15,000 gallons per hour! Wow! Terry McClain indicated that Brady Brandwood will be attending the next meeting with some fish for sale, so make sure you are ready for a new addition to your pond. 3 PKWS JULY 2011 ISSUE PAGE 3 BACK CREEK CHRISTIAN SCHOOL PROJECT (Brannon Raines, project coordinator with technical assistance from Leo Bollinger) Well, after several long days and many nights after work, the Back Creek Christian School pond is nearing completion. There is some landscaping to complete and a fence to install, but the majority of the work is completed. In my last update, I mentioned that we needed a few days without rain in order to get the liner in. We got our wish and on a hot day, Leo, Carol, and I installed the liner. From that point, the rocks went in without a problem and water was added. Due to concern that the fence was not in yet, I had to construct a grate that was placed in the pond to keep children who may fall in from going completely underwater. Even though it is a bit unsightly, it is necessary for insurance until the fence is in. We did run into one snag during the installation of the electrical. The phone company did not mark the T1 telephone and internet connection to the church. As all of you know, if it is there, the line will inevitably be cut. It was. The phone company had to come in and splice the wire back together. Once done, construction resumed. The plumbing of the pond is what has given us the most trouble. We got the pond up and running and a few days later, the pump was sucking air. We got it running again and once again, air. After looking at the problem and discussing the issue, we feel the solution lies in pulling more water to the filter. This is what is currently being worked on. Our next steps include mulching the area, placing more rock around the outside and waterfall, and placing goldfish in the pond. 4 PKWS JULY 2011 ISSUE PAGE 4 MINUTES OF June 2011 MEETING Submitted by Secretary Mary Ann Penix The June 11, 2011 meeting of the PKWS was held at the home of Don and Mary Ann Penix. There were fifteen (15) members present. Meeting was called to order by Vice President Terry McClain at 7:00 PM. OLD BUSINESS: Fish food has all been sold. Waxhaw Fair Booth for fall to promote interest in PKWS; under discussion. Web site is up and running. NEW BUSINESS: July meeting will be held at Terry and Mary Ellen McClain s. Brady from Lotus Land Koi will attend and have some fish to sell. Road trip to Waxhaw Larry Rosen will set up and notify Carol Mathis of time and date to be posted in newsletter. Lisa Freeman has resigned as co-editor of newsletter. Terry McClain discussed recent pond tour by David Weekly. New members Hobby declining. 5 PKWS JULY 2011 ISSUE PAGE 5 KOI NETTERS ON THE JOB!!! On a nice and hot sunny Sunday, six adventurers set out with one goal in mind, rescue some fish (and have some fun). We succeeded in both. A gentleman contacted Koi Netters and asked for help. He was unable to care for his fish any longer and wanted them to go to a good home. This is where we came in. According to the owner, there were many large fish in the pond which included koi, goldfish and brim. After pumping the pond down to a level where we could see the fish and better catch them, the rescue commenced. The pond was about five feet deep in areas with a few different levels. Of course, algae covered the entire liner and everyone prepared to watch fellow members slip and fall as they got into the pond. Luckily, from lessons learned from previous rescues, a few of the members brought waders. All total, approximately twenty fish were rescued. This number included ten large koi, over 20 inches. These fish were loaded into a mobile tank complete with air stones for the ride back to one of our quarantine tanks. As of this writing, many of the fish have already found good homes. I have included a link to pictures from the rescue.

7 PKWS JULY 2011 ISSUE PAGE 7 Koi Netters have some fish for sale. They are from this rescue and several are about 20 inches and have been in quarantee for two weeks. Tracy has put them through a salt treatment and potassium treatment. We are selling them for the gentleman who is handicapped and not longer able to care for them. We would like to get $75 for the large koi and will entertain offers for the smaller koi. Call Carol ( ) to arrange viewing.
