The weather was beautiful, except for the rain right before the Campfire ceremonies. I think that the kids caught every trout we put into the lake. We were also blessed with a couple hundred catfish that ODNR put into the lake that were unexpected. The leadership, instructors, junior leaders, and parents also deserve praise for all they did to make this a safe and relevant experience for all of our young students. I was so impressed with the Junior Leaders. They all enthusiastically supported the adult instructors, and assisted in every class taught. They also helped around the lake, lending a hand to the young anglers. I have no doubt that they could run this camp by themselves. Thanks to all of the Instructors for the hard work and preparation in ensuring that our Biggest Fish Awards classes are properly resourced and are informative and interesting. There were 78 persons in attendance, which included the leadership, instructors, 1 junior instructors, and 7 students. We did not have any tag-a-longs this year. A special thank you goes out to the following: Tiffany Frost (and her husband Gene) from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for teaching Stream Quality M o n i t o r i n g a n d A q u a t i c Entomology. The kids really love you guys, and the parents learn a lot too. Headhunters Inc. and the other groups and businesses contributing money, educational supplies, and fishing gear. All are acknowledged on page 4 of this newsletter. Jason Neuswanger at for his pictures and narratives used in our new basic Water Bugs class. At the 009 OBJC Spring Campfire, we had the Biggest Fish Award for four program groups. The recipients received a nice plaque to remember their big catch. The winners were: Spincasters Jacob Ross 13 Catfish Flycasters Emily Smith 13 Trout Junior Anglers Connor Lancia 16 Bass Master Anglers Courtney Duke 1 Crappie Congratulations to these winners and all of the participants in this year's fishing contest! Tom Bergman was installed as the organization's president and will steer the ship for the next two years. I strongly support Tom and will work with him to make the OBJC even better than it is today. I thank you all for supporting me. Please come back next year and bring a friend and as many kids as you can find. Never forget to respect the fish, and I'll see you next year!! President Adkins
2 Campfire News Spincasters 1st Year Program Welcome to the program Luke Bergman, Cameron Stryker, Nathan Lancia, and Jacob Spinners nd Year Program Spincasters is the first-year session in the Jungle Cock program. It is a very basic class to accommodate the youngest student and focuses on elementary segments such as: Knot Tying, Simple First Aid (avoidance of injury & hook removal), working with Live Bait, Equipment Identification (rod, reel, line, bobber, hooks, lures, etc.), and Fish Identification. Often the tag-a-longs sit in this session so they can get a feel for the program. The second-year session of the Jungle Cock program is named 'Spinners' because of the focus on fishing lures. This program has variety. The students learn how to make jigs and spinners, as well as how to use them. The pond is used as a hands-on classroom to show how the lures responded in the water. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and The Ohio Department of Natural Resources have helped with fish identification for the second-year class. A fish filet and cooking class was where all can enjoy the catch. It can be messy cleaning the fish, but the fried filets make it worth it. Flycasters 3rd Year Program Third-year students are the Flycasters. This session focuses on fly tying and fly fishing (casting). Fly fishing is the angling specialty that the original Jungle Cock club was based. In fact the name Jungle Cock comes from the neck feathers of the jungle fowl, used in trout fishing flies. The Flycasters are taken to a lake at Camp Logan to practice their flycasting techniques. Fly Tying The CREED Award Recipient Ken Adkins Page In continuing to recognize people in our organization that have gone above and beyond the call of duty in serving our organization, and who exemplify the essence of our Creed, Clif Ford was presented with the Creed Award this year. Clif Ford was President of the OBJC for more than 5 years. As President he worked tirelessly to improve and expand our classes. Recently, Clif showed how selfless he is when he assisted us in recreating the equipment and supplies for the Jigs and Spinners Class when all was lost in a house fire. He has been a dedicated member of this organization even though he has not been able to attend all of the campfires since leaving the position of President. Clif's unmatched enthusiasm and devotion for our organization is greatly appreciated. Congratulations to him for being recognized for his continuing dedication to the Ohio Chapter.
3 Junior Anglers Rod, Net, & Knife Building 4th Year Scott Furst and Troy Duke had their hands full with the 7 rod builders. Junior Leader Sara Hamilton helped again this year. Thanks Sara!! - Ken Adkins Issue 5, August 009 Ron Horton mentored 5 knife builders with the help of Junior Leaders Matt Koch and Jonathan Horton. Good job guys!! - Ken Adkins Rod Builders Net Builder The net building class went very well. The students did a great job. The choice of color for the webbing was. Unique. - Roy Naeder Knife Building Fishing with the Masters 5th Year & Graduates The Fishing with the Masters program had a small group this year, but a great time was had by all who attended. This year, we had a brother and sister combo, Cameron and Courtney Duke. The logistics for the year were a little challenging since I was on my way back from Washington DC for a class trip. Mike Hall and his junior leader son Josh met us at Mike s property in Vinton County on Saturday morning. I brought down Courtney and her mom Linda and we were on the water by 8am that morning. We spent the whole day trying every fishing technique the two students had learned over the past five years. We caught fish on spinning jigs, live bait, tried a little surface action, crank baits, and even caught fish while using our fly rods. We caught bass, bluegill, red ear, and crappie. Everyone there caught at least one Fish Ohio-sized biggest fish of the day, a 1 black crappie, which is only 1 short of a fish Ohio award. We enjoyed a nice pack lunch supplied by the ladies at camp, and then continued fishing until the early afternoon. We made it back to camp in time to spend a little time fishing for trout in the pond. We really enjoyed our day spent fishing with our two newest junior leaders. Thanks for spending the day with us and thanks to Mike for allowing us to use his beautiful property again. Thanks to Josh for fishing with us again and for all his help with everything. Since I ll have to take care of things around camp next year, I can say I ll miss the trip with next year s master candidates. -Tom Bergman 009 Graduates Cameron and Courtney Duke Brown Trout fish. 5 This was my nd year as an instructor. I was teaching lures with the first year class. I unfortunately wasn't there Friday evening in time for my class. John Arnholt taught that class. He and I taught them about all the different lures. They learned about boppers, spinners, divers, and a couple others. The instruction portion took about 40 minutes, and then we let the kids try some open fishing using the different lures. It was a very enjoyable class. The opportunity was very pleasurable. As far as the cooking class, I felt it went well. The deep fryer worked well for the class since it didn't require much set up or clean up. If we were going to fry more fish, it would be good to have something bigger. - Cliff Koch - Chris Lewis Rod Building Instructor Troy Duke inspects one of the rods. Tiffany Frost, ODNR, demonstrates how to collect samples during the Stream Quality Monitoring & Aquatic Entomology class.
