We are fortunate to see the demand that Lyons Ranch-sired calves generate because of their performance in the yards and on the rail. To increase the accuracies of the bulls EPDs, we have DNA tested every bull in the sale through GeneSeek and Angus Genetics Inc. The American Angus Association reports that the adding a genetic profile can give a young bull s EPDs accuracies as high if he had recorded over 16 head of progeny. We have done this so you can make solid breeding decisions for your operation s success and allow all of us to make better genetic progress. As you compare the bulls data in the catalog, please note that the Scrotal Circumferences and Adjusted Yearling Weights are what they measured at one year of age. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight EPD expressed in pounds is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning Weight EPD expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearling Weight EPD expressed in pounds is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Carcass Weight EPD expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire s progeny compared to that of other sires. ling EPD expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire s progeny compared to the progeny of other sires. Information in this Catalog Integrity of Data Provides the Base Today s technological environment demands that we provide up-to-date information covering many selection criteria. On this page is a description of some of the features we include in our catalog. Not every piece of data is important to every person. Pay attention to the information you need and evaluate the animals yourself on sale day to help insure your own success. With so much push toward producing curve-bending animals with extreme numbers, it can be tempting to focus on single trait selection when you are buying cattle. As we have for generations, we encourage you to select what works for your program without going for extremes. We need cattle that with high fertility, good feet and legs, are easy fleshing and have strong udders don t forget this when you make your selections. In every case, the integrity of the data is only as good as the person who reports it. We have made every attempt to collect and report data in an honest fashion. If you have any questions about any of the numbers provided, don t hesitate to ask. MATERNAL INDEX VALUES Maternal EPD - is a predictor of a sire s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering. Pathfinders -- # A Pathfinder cow is designated as a superior female based on their records of performance. Emphasis is placed on early puberty, breeding and early calving, followed by regularity of calving and above-average performance of the offspring at weaning. Pathfinder cows have had three calves that have averaged 105 or over (5% above average) at weaning. The cows are designated with # behind their name in our catalog. In addition, Pathfinder bulls that have sired five or more qualifying females are marked with #. $Value index EPDs are multi-trait selection indices, expressed in dollars per head, to assist producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sires are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. There are many $Value Indices. We have included two. ean and $Beef. Wean Value - expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit. includes revenue and cost adjustments, birth weight, weaning weight, maternal milk and mature cow size. Beef Value - $B expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. All Sale Bulls were DNA Tested In addition to the weights and measurements we have recorded and reported for generations, we pulled blood on every bull in the sale then submitted it to the American Angus Association. Scientists with GeneSeek identified unique markers in each animal and send us back genomically enhanced EPDs. The EPDs in the catalog have been derived using the latest industry tools. The extra information on young animals can help reduce risk and allow all of us to make faster genetic progress. In addition, any potential carriers of the DD condition were tested through AGI. The carriers will be noted beside his registration number as DDC. Genomic results are a way to enhance the current selection tools -- to achieve more accuracy on predictions for younger animals. IIn an effort to increase what we know about the heritable traits on the bulls in the offering, and so we could be able to share this with you, we drew blood on each bull in the sale then sent it in to Igenity and Angus Genetics Inc. at the American Angus Association. The result is an EPD with a much higher predictability so you should be able to have more confidence in each trait and better know what to expect in the calves out of the bulls you purchase at Lyons Ranch. EPDs, Expected Progeny Differences, allow producers to make comparisons between cattle within the breed and have been around for many years. A young, unproven bull with no sons or daughters recorded at the American Angus Association will have a very low accuracy on each EPD because he is unproven. By using DNA to create a genomic-enhanced EPD (adding DNA to the animal s performance and its ancestors ), the accuracy on a young animal with no ultrasound record will go from an accuracy of.05 (the default) to.41 depending on the trait. Many of the Lyons Ranch bulls in the sale have accuracies over.40 on some EPDs because of three things: 1. DNA-testing through Igenity 2. Accurate reporting of an individual s performance 3. High accuracies in their ancestry Angus Genetics Inc. and the American Angus Association report this: The increased accuracy of adding a genetic profile to a weanling bull is equivalent to adding about 16 progeny to its EPDs.
