2 Klaipėda University (KU) is the only R&D and studies institution in western Lithuania, which consolidates its leadership in the fields of marine sciences and technology, fosters implementation of EU integrated maritime policy and development of a maritime economy. The Marine Research Institute is a subdivision of KU, conducting fundamental and applied research on marine and coastal environment and maritime technologies. 4 RETROUT -Development, promotion and sustainable management of the Baltic Sea Region as a coastal fishing tourism destination Coastal fishing tourism offers opportunities for rural jobs, diversification of the fishery sector and prolonged tourism season. In order to fully exploit the economic potential, the project addresses three main gaps currently limiting the development of the sector: 1. Weak capacity of the fishing tourism sector and lack of resources to meet the customers demand. 2. Weak governance framework, characterised by different national interpretations of EU's legal framework that in many cases are counter-productive for coastal fishing tourism. 3. Weak management of ecosystem services i.e. the production of sea trout stocks. Helcom core indicator report, 2015

5 One of the aims of RETROUT is: to assess the pressure of recreational fishing on sea trout stocks, to compile information on the status of sea trout rivers and stocks, to evaluate different river restoration methods and technological solutions and to recommend best practices and management options There was highlighted a pan-baltic need for harmonization of methods applied for the river biotope classification, for evaluation of the quality of the trout reproduction areas, and for carrying out electrofishing surveys and the concomitant assessment of the parr density. Task of the workshop is more comprehensive harmonization results and more complete understanding on present state and future needs for intergrated habitat and fish status assessment. 6 Workshop Programme DAY 1 Background information by HELCOM Pragmatic use of the habitat monitoring method (developed by Peter Gustafsson) by Håkan Häggström Pragmatic use of the trout habitat score developed by ICES WGBALANST group (Pedersen & Degerman) by Katarina Magnusson Introduction to electrofishing and a simplified THS approach by Martin Kesler Improving the estimates of parr density using hierarchical Bayesian model for electrofishing data by Oula Tolvanen Dinner (at own cost) at Evening session - Demonstrating the digital protocol of the habitat monitoring method.

7 Workshop Programme DAY 2 The field trip to different type rivers and different biotopes (including natural and regulated) to have practical demonstration of the biotope classification and THS approaches.
