Don t miss the browns in October as they run upstream from the Buffalo Bill Reservoir during their annual spawning migration. Yellowstone cutthroat, cut-bows and rainbow trout in the 10 to 14-inch class, with prizes often exceeding 20 inches, can be found in the upper two-thirds of the North Fork as well as directly from the banks of the ranch. This water offers casual wading throughout its course and can be negotiated with smaller crafts, such as three-man rafts. Anglers should plan on throwing big dry flies throughout the season. Golden stoneflies, green drakes, woolly buggers, large nymphs, grasshoppers, gray drakes and large fall caddis work well from late June through October.

7 Nearby Live Water: The South Fork of the Shoshone River is one of the most under-fished rivers in the Yellowstone area. The South Fork originates in the Washakie Wilderness Area and winds out of the Absaroka Range through nearly 25 miles of public land. Wade fishing is great June through October for cutthroat, rainbow and brook trout ranging from 8 to 12 inches. Open to the public year round, the Buffalo Bill Reservoir offers excellent fishing including ice fishing in the winter months. The inaugural owners also started the first food service in the valley, serving chicken dinners to both tourists and locals in the area. When the lodge was sold to an incoming owner in 1931, the name was changed to the Wapiti Lodge. The lodge has evolved over the decades, from a gas station, general store, post office and restaurant, now returning to its original offering of relaxation and recreation to area travelers. The property even served as the home of the Wapiti Post Office from 1938 until Although over 100 years old, time has been kind in preserving the lodge s structure and grace.
