5 VISIT TO THE MARYSVILLE TROUT FARM 4 JULY 2015 It was cold but dry when we Red Tag members arrived at the Marysville trout farm. But that soon changed as we were shown by our host, Les, to his breeding ponds where he assured us monsters lurked, both rainbow and brown. Twelve doughty souls turned up in the mountain mists. Ken Lucas and Brian Cocks were first to arrive, followed by Marshall Pardee, Greg Hermans and Don Armour, Chris Peterson, Janie Joseph and Niki Duckstein, Len Murray with daughter Ingrid and, finally, me (Peter Jamvold) with my eager, 10 year old grandson Gus. A few of our group had never cast a fly line before and some newer members had yet to catch their first trout. So it was with much licking of lips in anticipation that we saw as we arrived the occasional serious rise and some massive swirls on the pond s surface. procedure three or four times in quick succession, it got a little embarrassing and I had to take over the rod for a while to give the fish a rest. GUS RETRIEVING Marshall Pardee impressed us all with his enormously long casts, though rumour has it he resorted to using glo-bugs at one point. But Marshall was right in the thick of demonstrating good catch and release techniques throughout the morning. KEN LUCAS HAS ANOTHER We talked among ourselves about the requirement to use only barbless hooks and the need to return any fish to the water with care and consideration. Then Ken Lucas and Brian Cocks set the pace - after Ken found the right fly (bead-head nymph of indeterminate colour) lent to him by a friend - with a number of quick strikes. In the meantime, grandson Gus encountered problems with casting, so I demonstrated how to retrieve the line and then cast it out for him. Was it his first or his second retrieve that led to a shout, I ve got one! and Gus landed a nice rainbow hen of around 3 pounds After we carefully released the fish, I cast for him again, then wandered over to talk with Don Amour. Scarcely a minute later we heard I ve got another one! After we went through this CHRIS PETERSEN, DON ARMOUR, GREG HERMANS AT SMALL POND Early on, Greg Hermans and Don Armour observed a large number of fish migrating into a small pondlet connected by a narrow channel from the main pond. On reflection it seemed that this was a feeding bay and the fish were RED TAG NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2015 Page 5 of 10
6 assembling for dinner, just like chooks or cattle on a farm. Greg and Don put their observation to good use and they, together with Chris Peterson, landed a significant number of large fish from that small water. Meanwhile, Len Murray took the opportunity to tutor his daughter, Ingrid, on the intricacies of fine casting technique. LEN & INGRID MURRAY JANIE & MARSHALL LANDING A FISH Janie and Niki got among the fish and were doing well until Niki, impressed by a significant number of large rises and swirls in the water close to her, replaced her nymph with a dry Royal Coachman. Things quietened down after that until the girls gave in to the inevitable and reattached weighted nymphs. JANIE HAVING A GREAT DAY Despite the rain it was a great morning. The visit to the ponds gave new members a chance to feel the effects of a big fish on the line and to practice their stripping and striking techniques. It also demonstrated how subtle a take can be on a nymph. And for the old lags, it was a chance to wet the line during the closed season and, perchance, to impart a bit of practical wisdom here and there. It was four degrees Celsius as we left the car park at lunchtime for a pie and hot chocolate at the Marysville bakery.
