5 Rolling Provincial Review: Implementation Implement Fisheries Enhancement Opportunities on the Coeur d Alene Reservation Habitat Restoration - Preliminary Results 2002 Project Objectives Implement habitat restoration projects to increase carrying capacity in target tributaries and improve the functioning of key watershed processes More than eight acres of palustrine wetlands constructed Non-point source pollutants reduced from over 640 acres annually Enhanced 850 acres of highly erodible upland and riparian habitat Restored native riparian communities along four miles of stream Planted more than 50,000 trees and shrubs Photo: Courtesy Coeur d Alene Tribe Channel/Floodplain Restoration - Preliminary Results Before After Prior to restoration, the channel had been straightened and entrenched. The stream was isolated from the floodplain, highly unstable and exhibited low habitat complexity. Following restoration efforts, the channel was stabilized, and returned to the floodplain elevation. Efforts resulted in the reduction of bank height and risk of erosion as well as the restoration of meanders. 163

Data revealed a current vortex existed where the light was installed Current was forcing kokanee towards the strobe lights Need to reevaluate the effectiveness of the lights by relocating them closer to turbine intakes Photo: Courtesy Confederated Tribes of the Colville Indian Reservation Strobe lights were placed in front of Grand Coulee Dam in an effort to evaluate their effectiveness to prevent entrainment of kokanee through the dam. 172
