My time as president has come and gone so quickly it is almost a blur. But I would like to thank all those members of the Board and Officers that make my job as president as easy as it can be. It takes a good deal of effort to keep a club functioning, and for that I will always be grateful. I hope the upcoming 2011 season is as productive and exciting as 2010 has been for our club. As mentioned we have a few new Board of Directors and Officers positions for the 2011 season. The votes have been cast and tallied and the results are as follows. Secretary: Fred Backhaus, Treasurer: Nick Miceli, Vice President: Gerard Pernot President: Steve Siedlecki. Board: Andy King, Board: John Calo Board: Tom Tyler. Please welcome our new top brass and wish them well on the upcoming 2011 season. Our forecast for the following year looks bright and sunny. We plan to form a committee that will help facilitate our goals for the following year. Our goal is to become more involved in community outreach and public involvement. Andy King has already begun researching the AMA s Take Off and Grow (TAG) program which provides grants for clubs who host events that provide mentors and resources for those interested in the hobby. Please feel free to contact us to volunteer and get involved anyway you can. The AMA has been mailing out 2011 membership cards. Our L.I.A.R.S Club Membership renewal is in full swing. If you haven t already had a chance, make sure you fill out your 2011 membership form, enclose your 2011 dues, enclose a copy of your 2011 AMA card, and lastly, a SASE with proper postage sent to our custodian of permits Nick Miceli. Please be aware the Club Dues will increase to $50.00 for the upcoming 2011 year. Our next big event will be our annual Holiday Party at our meeting 7 pm December 9 th. The club for this event will provide food and prizes. Please stop on by for a relaxed evening with food and a Chinese Style Auction. We will also be having our annual Chili Fly January 9 th with a snow date of January 16 th. This event brings together our members during one of the coldest months of the year. Be Safe! 3 Remote Show and tell by Harvey Rubenstein Greeting from Florida. I've settled in and am enjoying retired life here in The Villages. Many maps identify the area as Lady Lake. It's about 1-1/2 hr drive North West of Orlando and about a 1 hr. drive South East of Ocala. For those of you who wish to check out the weather, the zip is I'm a member or two R/C flying clubs. The Village E-Flyers. The field is the local Polo Field here at the Villages. Electric only up to 5 lb. I've been given permission to fly my Hanger 9 J-3 Cub which is 7-1/2 lb. All of my larger aircraft are flown at the Ocala Flying Models site; about a 40 min. drive from the house. Here everything is flown, including jets. The E-Flite PT-17 is powered by an E-flite-25 with a 12-6 prop and a v. 3 cell battery and 4 JR MN48 servos. I added simulated wing flying wires. Simple to do, besides the plane didn't look good without them. I needed to add about 10 oz. of nose weight for the "as instructed" balance point. Off to the flying field for the test flight which turned out to be quite a handful. The takeoff roll was good. However, as soon as it was airborne, the nose just about went vertical. The flight was one short circle of the field with a very sensitive elevator and rough landing. The construction manual incorrectly locates the CG: both the English & metric dimensions are wrong; 3-1/4" to 3-3/4" behind the leading edge of the top wing. I added additional nose weight, locating the CG at a little less than 3". The subsequent 3 dozen or so flight have been very enjoyable. I've also included a couple of photos of the OFMC field. The primary flying field includes a Pilot Lounge area and four shaded work area, two on each side the lounge. Both the Pilot Lounge and 4 work stations are electrified for field charging. Rick & the rest of the electric flyers, eat your heart out. The Pilot Lounge also includes ceiling fans for the summer heat. A secondary area is for Heli & Glider flying only. It also has a shaded pit area. Wishing everybody a happy and healthy holiday season. I still look forward to reading the Altitude every month. I also like to check out the cold weather conditions at the field. As I write this, Nov. 24th, I was out flying this morning; cloudless day, temperature 82 Deg. 10 by Avey Shaw I never write about helicopters because I don't know didley about them. I have the Real Flight program that has them on it. I have tried and cannot master it. Crash and burn every time. I can appreciate and envy those who can successfully fly those machines but for me it looks like I'll have to be content with fixed wing flying. Therefore, the construction of these whirly beasts is completely foreign to me. I hear terms and names of parts unlike anything I can fathom. You guys are a separate but viable entity in model aviation. Model airplanes with wings I know about. I have written many articles about them and the people that fly them. Today I was thinking of just that, the types of guys in this hobby. What type are you? Firstly, we are all good fellows with a common interest in model flying. Some are more proficient than others and strive for perfection. Some are content just to get in the air and there are those in between. Some build scale with exact color matching, all the stitching and rivets, sophisticated engines, all this and more with a cost that can blow your mind. They might enter contests to show their work and win prizes. Then there is the foam profile, good enough to fly and win fun fly contests. In between, runs the gamut of he builds neat and clean or sloppy but functional. Whatever you do, your satisfying yourself making a tool to enjoy the hobby. Beyond the builders we have the assemblers. Some of these guys do a great job with A.R.F.s. They put extra work into them. Not being satisfied with colors, they might repaint and add details. Having the structure completed saves time. This might be the only way they could have the airplane they always wanted. When A.R.F.s were introduced into the hobby, it made a dramatic change. You could enjoy flying without having to know how to build. That was a huge stimulus to the hobby. If you are one of them, welcome. There is a small faction of guys that for the most part do not fly but enjoy being a member of a flying club. They enjoy the comradeship and the subject of airplanes. Their enjoyment is to watch others do what perhaps they themselves cannot do. All are welcome. In closing the last thing I would like to touch on is the willingness of the more informed and proficient to help others. If you are new to the hobby, do not be shy. Ask for help and you shall receive. The news letter is there for you. You can find help at club meetings, at the field and the telephone. Whatever you want to know pertaining to model aviation, the answers can be had. The L.I.A.R.S club is at your disposal. Avey Shaw
