6 Bugs, Bugs and More Bugs All About Grasshoppers (Reading) Grasshoppers are usually found in grassy areas. They are able to jump long distances. Grasshoppers can be quite harmful because they destroy farmer s crops. Grasshoppers will spit a brown juice when they are picked up or handled. The brown juice is often called tobacco juice. This juice helps to protect the grasshopper from ants and other insects. They also jump up and fly away from their enemies or hide in among leaves and in tall grasses. There are two main types of grasshoppers. There are long horned grasshoppers and short-horned grasshoppers. Their horns are their antennae. Grasshoppers with short horns are called locusts. The grasshopper s body has three main parts. It has a head, thorax, and an abdomen. On its head are two curved antennae. They are used to find food. Its mouth has powerful jaws with sharp teeth. The grasshopper has five eyes on its head. On each side is a large compound eye. Near the bottom of the antennae are three simple eyes. The grasshopper s wings and legs are attached to its thorax. It usually has two pairs of wings and six legs. Some grasshoppers have no wings at all. All of its legs are used for walking. The front legs are used to hold its food while it eats. The grasshopper s legs are strong and powerful and they are used for jumping and leaping. On the grasshopper s abdomen are ten pairs of breathing holes called spiracles. Female grasshoppers lay their eggs in holes that they dig in the ground. The eggs are sprayed with a sticky liquid to waterproof them. This group of eggs is called a pod. The eggs are laid in the late summer and early autumn. They hatch in the spring. Young grasshoppers look like adult grasshoppers except they do not have wings. They shed their skins five or six times and grow a new one before they become adult grasshoppers. OTM-2139 ISBN: On The Mark Press 2011
