1 Newsletter of the Truckee River Flyfishers TRF Mission Statement We are dedicated to: improving and promoting the sport of fly fishing in Nevada. Promote and encourage the conservation of game fish, especially wild trout, through the betterment of the streams and lakes everywhere. Encourage and assist our youth to become fly fishers and true sportspersons. With plenty of snow pack. these flows should continue to be very good for at least a few more years. The air temperatures are still low and the edges of the river are holding fish. A few big browns have been caught this week. Most of you know that Pyramid Lake reopened last month on February 15th. The first week of the reopen was outstanding fishing. Many of our club members released several fish including some very big fish. This past week however was a bit slow due to the high pressure ridge that had built up. The best time to fish Pyramid is, usually, when the low pressure pushes in just before a storm. Because of all the rain and snow in Jan. & Feb. the lake has risen about two feet and will continue to rise as the snow pack melts. The beaches have changed significantly so it is a good idea to scout for new ones. The Annual Club Banquet will be held on Sunday March 12th at the Tamarak Junction starting at 5:00 pm with No Host Cocktails with Dinner served at 6:00 P.M. We will be serving Tri-Tip, Salmon or Chicken. I believe it will be a buffet style like last year giving you your choice. The ticket prices are $ Our guest speaker will be Mikey Wier. Mikey works for Cal Trout and created Burl Productions. He has produced several outstanding films including his Soul Fish series and also the epic production Cali Rush!. He will be presenting his show on Pacific Steelhead and Native Trout Species. This show will provide a deep insight into the steelhead and trout status in California and the coastal rivers. In closing, I would like to thank all of the club members for allowing me to serve as your president for the past two years. I had a great time and I m looking forward to the club activities in the future. Special thanks goes to vice President Mark Warren, Secretary /Treasurer and newsletter editor Tom Smith, website editor Curt Kamada, BOD members Mike Hoffman, Mike O Brien, and Stu Chandler. Mike, and Stu also do the Fly Tying Round table, taking over from Mike Hoffman who also deserves my thanks.. A thank you also goes out to Mike Sevon for producing the Banquet Poster and for filming the Roundtables and to all of our members that are always there to help especially Bob Sappenfield, Wes Ong Terrell Ogburn and Jerry Harding. 2 Page 2 The Angler s Line FLY TYING ROUNDTABLE Our roundtable last month was a great one thanks to our guest tier, Mike Sevon. Mike is one of the top notch tiers we have in our club who generously share their expertise. Mike tied up a few patterns that he used, with great success, on his last 7 day Bonefish adventure to Christmas Island. (See below) He also explained the applications each pattern has to offer for fishing our local waters.. Special thanks go to Stu & Anne Chandler for all they do to make this event a success. NOTE: There will be no Fly Tying Roundtable in March due to our Annual Banquet being held on the 12 th. I will have more information regarding April s roundtable in next month s newsletter. 4 Page 4 The Angler s Line March 2017 Prospects By Wes Ong Truckee River: The river has cleared a bit, at least it is not brown. It is still too high to fish and with the amount of snow we have in the mountains I doubt if it will drop much in the coming months;1840 cfs. Tahoe has come up three feet in the last two months with only two more feet to go before it gets to its rim. I m pretty sure that Stampede will spill this spring and they have already adjusted Prosser down so it can handle the run off. Hinkson Slough: Generally the bite gets better as the weather turns milder. The opener was a bit disappointing with very few fish caught. North Pond had fish in it but it looked like Nestle s Quick. Squaw Creek Res. If we get some sunny weather catch rates should be in the double digits, if there is some open water. All types of presentation will work, sinking line, or floating line in the shallow water. Small light colored water boatman has done well in the past. Pyramid Lake: Now that the lake, or at least some of it, is open it presents some rather challenging conditions. Crowds, inlet streams which muddy the waters depending on which way the wind or current it taking it, and few choices of where to fish. That also means the Ranger has the same set of parameters. I saw him twice in the same day, normally I don t see him twice in a year. The bite could be moving in the direction of every three to four days is a good one with the fish disappearing or not hitting the other couple. All methods are working now, if the fish come in close switch to the indicator and don t be afraid to use a big fly. East Walker River: Always check the flows before you go down to make sure they have been steady for at least a couple of days. Last I checked the river was blown out but if it drops this month there should be a stonefly hatch toward the end of the month. Use a golden stone nymph or fish the dries with a Stimulator. If that doesn t work there should be some good beatis action in the afternoons. Indian Creek Res. Why this lake yields large fish I have no clue but the fish here run in the 3 pound range and are common. Ice should be off the lake this month and with a little warm weather this lake should cut loose. Eastern Nevada: Most of the fisheries over here have been iced over for most of the winter. The Marsh may have some open water this month with some open water at the fingers in the Collection Ditch. Call before you go. 5 Newsletter of the Truckee River Flyfishers Page 5 LiL SPANKER PHEASANT TAIL The LiL Spanker Pheasant Tail nymph is one deadly attractor fly. This variation of the popular pheasant tail nymph is tied with some fish attracting material. The CDC feather holds and traps air bubbles which allow this fly to be fished as an emerger. The Krystal Flash allows the fish to perceive this fly in a variety of water conditions. HOOK: Mustad 9671, Size #12 THREAD: Brown, 8/0 BEAD: Copper, 7/64 TAIL: Mallard flank, Wood duck BODY: Pheasant tail RIB: Ultra wire, Copper Brassie THORAX: Peacock herl WING CASE: Krystal Flash, Pearl LEGS: CDC, Natural dun COLLAR: Superfine dubbing, Tan 1. Attach bead behind hook eye and secure with lead wire. 4-6 wraps 2. Attach thread near bead and wrap back to start of hook bend. 3. Attach small clump of mallard flank fibers to form the tail. Approximately ½ length of hook shank. 4. Secure Mallard flank fibers to the top of hook shank forward to the thorax area. (Remove excess) 5. Attach copper wire and secure rearward to the base of the tail. (Do not remove excess) 6. Attach tips of 6 to 8 pheasant tail fibers and wrap thread forward near thorax area. 7. Wrap pheasant tail fibers forward and secure near thorax area. (Remove excess) 8. Counter wrap copper wire forward and secure behind bead. (Remove excess) 9. Attach Krystal Flash (6 strands) on top of hook shank behind bead with excess pointed rearward. (Do not remove excess) 10. Attach peacock herl (3 to 4 fibers) near front of body material and wrap forward to bead. (Secure and remove excess) 11. Pull Krystal Flash over thorax and secure behind bead. (Do not remove excess) 12. Divide Krystal Flash equally and secure to each side of hook shank. Trim to approximately ¾ length of body. 13. Attach tips of CDC feather behind bead and while stroking barbs rearward wrap feather forward. (Secure and remove excess) 14. Dub a small collar just behind the bead. 15. Whip finish. I like to fish this fly when the fish are finicky. Give it a try! Mike O Brien
