6 REDAKSIONEEL / EDITORIAL Getroue lesers Die suiwerste vorm van selfrespek is om ons foute te erken en dit reg te stel. Dale Turner, Amerikaanse sanger-liedjieskrywer Ek moet egter erken dat dit ongelooflike moed verg om te sê: Ek was verkeerd en ek is jammer. Ek kry gereeld in my beroep en lewe te doen met mense wat glo dat dit n teken van swakheid of onbekwaamheid is om te erken hulle was verkeerd. Ek weet nie waarom soveel mense hierdie wanopvatting het nie, maar ek het geleer dat die teenoorgestelde waar is. Die proses om respek te verdien begin die oomblik wat ons ons foute erken en die integriteit en moed het om sê: Ek was verkeerd en ek is jammer. Nader aan die tuisfront vertoon die voorblad van Stywe Lyne / Tight Lines se April 2015-uitgawe n hengelaar met drie kabeljoue wat hy by Witsand gevang het. Dis n onwettige vangs wat glad nie op die voorblad moes verskyn het nie. Die daaglikse limiet vir kabeljou is 1 oos van Kaap Agulhas en 5 wes van Kaap Agulhas. Wat komposisie betref, is dit dalk n pragtige voorblad, maar vir die ernstige hengelaar is dit onaanvaarbaar, veral aangesien hierdie gebied reeds onder groot druk verkeer ten opsigte van volwasse populasie en agteruitgang van broei-areas. Die voorblad weerspreek dus n aantal artikels wat ons publiseer en waarin ons die bewaring van ons hulpbronne verkondig. Met so n groot invloed, veral op nuwe hengelaars, moet Stywe Lyne / Tight Lines die toon aangee deur sy woorde en dade te laat ooreenstem (hoewel met die volmag van die skrywers). Een van die lewe se moeilikste oomblikke is wanneer ons moet erken dat ons nie ons huiswerk gedoen het nie... Ek was verkeerd en ek is jammer. Dale Turner, American singer-songwriter I must admit, however, that it takes tremendous fortitude to utter the words, I was wrong, and I am sorry. So often in business and in life I deal with people who believe that admitting they were wrong shows weakness or ineptness. I do not know why so many people carry this false belief, but I have learned that the opposite is true. The journey towards earning respect begins the moment we recognise our mistakes and have the integrity and fortitude to utter the words, I was wrong, and I am sorry. Closer to home, the cover of the April 2015 edition of Stywe Lyne / Tight Lines depicts an angler with three kob that he caught at Witsand. This is an illegal catch and really should not have been on the cover at all. The daily limit of kob is 1 east of Cape Agulhas and 5 west of Cape Agulhas. In terms of composition, it may have been a beautiful cover, but for the serious angler it is unacceptable, especially since this area is already under great pressure with regard to adult population and collapsing breeding areas. The cover thus contradicts a number of articles we publish and in which we preach about looking after our resources. With such a big influence, especially on new anglers, Stywe Lyne / Tight Lines must remain at the fore of practising what it preaches (albeit by proxy of the authors). If requested we will publish the letter under a nom de plume. : stywelyne@stywelyne.net : : The Editor, PO Box 512, La Montagne, 0184 Vaal Smallmouth Yellow On Sunday, 22 February this year, Aidan Mack (11) from Klerksdorp and his dad Richard did a bit of fly fishing for yellows on the Vaal River on a friend s farm, approximately 30 km west of Orkney in North-West Province. The weather was hot and clear and the river level was nice and low. The water was a bit green and smelly though from an algae bloom they saw on the Lower Vaal. Dad Richard managed to get three reasonable yellows and a nice mudfish. At around 14:00, he hooked into a monster that broke off as it took off over some rapids frustrating! Aidan was having no luck and getting just as frustrated as his old man; he moved up to fish/poach the same spot his dad was trying. his son was now about 30 m downstream of where he had hooked into his fish and was heading towards some rapids. Richard thought that the fish surely could not be that big and that Aidan was scared of putting too much pressure on it and breaking the tippet. After about 20 minutes, Aidan was getting close to losing the fish over the rapids, so dad went to help him net it. Just as well as his landing net was way too small! Eventually son and dad got the fish in the net and brought it to the side for a photo. It was an absolute beauty fat, yellow and in good condition. Richard estimates the smallmouth yellow to have been in the 3,5-4 kg range. Young Aidan was chuffed to have caught a bigger one than his old man! The fish was safely released after a few photos and swam away strongly. Richard retied another Rock Worm fly and quickly cast his line at the same spot where he hooked the previous monster. He immediately hooked into another good-sized fish. At the same time Aidan also latched onto a fish that Richard initially thought was an average-sized yellow. Richard managed to land his after about 10 minutes and it weighed in at about 3-3,5 kg a great fish! He was really happy as it put up quite a fight in the fast-flowing, shallow water. After not paying too much attention while fighting his fish, he looked back winning letter The Macks ended the day at that, with both of them having landed their personal best on fly. Aidan caught his whopper on a Copper John fished as a dropper fly on a 5/6-weight rod with floating line and a 1x tippet. Richard caught all his fish on a green Rock Worm pattern fished at point with an 8/9-weight floating line set-up, also with a 1x tippet. According to Richard Mack, the Vaal River still holds some fantastic smallmouth yellows and in the early summer when the water is clear and the first rains have washed away the hair algae/grass, it is not uncommon to catch and release 20 of these beautiful fish in one day. Die ophou van die vis met die skaal was nie normaal nie maar die vashou was n probleem. Die vis het elke keer gespartel en uit Dihan se arms geval toe ek besluit om gou te maak, die vis te weeg en los te laat. Dankie vir die teregwysing (Alle foto s moet omgewingsvriendelik wees) op bl 61. Dit sal nie weer met ons gebeur nie. Ons leer baie omtrent hengel in Stywe Lyne. Die boek maak die prys die moeite werd. Dihan Bezuidenhout (7) en sy oupa Dish (Johan Bezuidenhout) is gereelde lesers van Stywe Lyne. Dihan word deur sy oupa geleer om te hengel. Op die genoemde foto verskyn n trotse Dihan met n 6,4 kg-karp wat hy Dinsdag 16 Desember 2014 by Tierpoortdam buite Bloemfontein gevang het. Die vis is weer vrygelaat Redakteur. As an angler, I tend to get bored of catching fish under 500 g. I then had to accept there is nothing I could do about the size of fish that inhabit our waters. I now had to devise a plan to get endless hours of joy while catching those small fish! Sounds impossible, right? I subsequently decided to try fishing in a way that I could see the fish attack my bait fish ultra-light, get a good fight from a small fish, yet be friendly to my wallet! I purchased an ultra-light 5'6 rod, size 2000 reel, a packet of small flies (caddis nymphs etc), 3 lb line with a 5 lb leader and some floating fly-indicator putty. After spooling my reel and joining the leader, I tied a fly on and about 1,3 m above it a tiny piece of the flyindicator putty. BRIEWE LETTERS I had a lot of faith in my new style of fishing. I tried it with immediate effect at a local stream. I made a cast of about 10 m upstream and let the fly and indicator float down with the current, reeling up unnecessary slack line. Then, as the fly and indicator floated past me, I witnessed a small yellowfish (scaly) attacking my fly. I was on! This technique actually worked because of my ultra-light set-up and the snags in the water. I carefully fought the fish for five minutes, even though it was only about 400 g in weight. I really enjoyed the fight because I felt every little movement on my sensitive rod and light line. In three hours I tallied up 21 Natal yellowfish (scalies). It was a fishing trip that I enjoyed very much while catching small fish. To prove the technique was working, I fished in Spioenkop Dam with this technique. I did short 10 m casts into gullies with a slow retrieval, which rewarded me with 56 tilapia, 6 scalies, 2 carp and a 2 kg barbel that gave me one of the best fights ever (a 15-minute fight with intervals of screaming reel runs). It just proves that one can have a lot of fun catching those small fish with your own customised fishing technique. 10 RIMPELS OP DIE WATER KOMMERWEKKENDE NAMIBIESE HENGELVERSKYNSEL Chris Nolan n Baie kommerwekkende verskynsel vir Suid-Afrikaanse hengelaars wat in Namibië gaan hengel, is besig om sy kop daar uit te steek. Ek is deur n paar hengelaars wat Hentiesbaai onlangs besoek het, genader om voornemende hengelaars te waarsku dat hulle met die Namibiese owerhede mag slaags raak as hulle gidse gebruik wat nie in Namibië geregistreer is nie. Soos in Suid-Afrika, moet alle natuurgidse (insluitend hengelgidse) in Namibië by die Namibiese Toerismeraad geregistreer wees. Persoonlike veiligheiden noodhulpbevoegdhede is voorvereistes hiervoor. Besoekende Suid-Afrikaanse hengelaars is nie altyd bewus hiervan nie, met die gevolg dat hulle kontrakte met ongeregistreerde hengelgidse aangaan en gou besef hulle het hul geld gemors. Dit blyk dat hierdie nie-amptelike hengelgidse nie so professioneel is nie en hengelaars soms sommer na die eerste die beste hengelplekke neem, wat nie noodwendig altyd die beste is nie. Wanneer die hengelaars dan kla dat hulle nie vis daar kry nie, ontstaan n stryery en werk die gids se ghielies nie meer so lekker saam nie. In een geval het die gids met die besoekende hengelaars ooreengekom dat hy ander verpligtinge het om na te kom en gevra of dit in orde is as hulle slegs saam met sy ghielie uitgaan. Die hengelaars het ingestem. Die ghielie het in die gids se afwesigheid sy streke begin uithaal hy wou nie lekker saamwerk nie en was uittartend. Hy het gehoop die besoekende hengelaars sou hom te lyf gaan sodat hy n klag van aanranding by die naaste polisiekantoor aanhangig kan maak. Vanselfsprekend word daar dan n amptelike klagstaat oopgemaak wat vereis dat die beskuldigde aangekla en opgesluit word totdat n hofdatum bepaal word. Dit beteken dat die betrokke hengelaar nie saam met die res van sy groep huiswaarts kan keer nie. Met die hengelaar opgesluit, blyk die modus operandi te wees dat die klaer (die ghielie) meer toegeeflik raak en dan aanbied om die saak terug te trek indien die beskuldigde n afkoopboete betaal met ander woorde n bribe in ruil daarvoor dat die persoon nie in die hof hoef te verskyn nie. Volgens plaaslike hengelaars en inwoners blyk dit n normale praktyk te wees, en word die omkoopgeld dan tussen die ghielie en wie ook al van hulp was, verdeel. In n ander geval het die hengelaars besluit om liewer nie verder met die gids en sy ghielies sake te doen nie en eerder die kontrak op te skort en niks verder te betaal nie. Hulle het op hul eie verder gehengel. Ander verrassings het egter op hulle gewag... Vanaf daardie oomblik kan die besoekers verwag om meer gereeld aan inspeksies onderwerp te word waartydens elke denkbare permit ondersoek word en die aantal visse wat gevang is, gekontroleer word. Nie dat enige aantyging hiermee gemaak word dat die visserybeamptes nie aan diens is of nie hul take uitvoer nie. Op n ander keer het die ghielie beweer dat die hengelaars vis in filette gesny het by een van die toegedeelde visskoonmaakplekke, waar toegelaat word dat vis se ingewande verwyder word, maar nie dat dit in filette gesny word nie. Die hengelaars kon gelukkig hierdie aantyging afweer toe hulle bewys het dat die gids self die ghielie opdrag gegee het om visfilette daar te sny terwyl hy nog onder kontrak met die hengelaars was. Hengelaars moet oppas hiervoor en ook onthou dat hulle volgens die permitvoorwaardes nie vis wat tot filette verwerk is, mag terugbring nie. Slegs vis waarvan net die kop en ingewande verwyder is, mag teruggebring word sodat die vissoort en aantal bevestig kan word. Besoekende hengelaars moet verder onthou dat hul vangskwotas asook hul invoer- en uitvoerpermitte deur die Namibiese sowel as die Suid-Afrikaanse doeane gekontroleer sal word. Vis wat by visfabrieke gekoop is, moet vergesel wees van n aankoopkwitansie as deel van die uitvoerpermit. Ek hoop dat hierdie inligting Suid-Afrikaanse hengelaars sal laat besef hoe belangrik dit is om geregistreerde toer- of hengelgidse te gebruik. Bogenoemde gevalle verwys na insidente by Hentiesbaai, maar dit mag ook by ander Namibiese oorde voorkom. Desondanks hierdie bewerings is die algemene ervaring onder besoekende hengelaars dat Hentiesbaai se mense baie gaaf is en dat dit een van die beste hengelbestemmings is. Net jammer dat sulke geïsoleerde gevalle n wrang smaak in die mond laat en die goeie sentimente jeens hierdie plekkie se mense en hul gasvryheid in die gedrang bring. 8 STYWE LYNE Die Hengelaar se Vriend Mei 2015
