Lord of the Flies Chapter One Lord of the Flies examines the nature of evil and society s veneer of civilization that just barely hides savagery. Describe what you think is savage: Tell me where you think evil comes from. 1. List three ways Ralph and Piggy are opposites. 2. The author sets the island up to be a perfect place, a utopia, how does Golding do it? (Show how the island s perfect) 3. The boys find an object that seems almost magical. What is it? Who finds it? Who uses it? What is it used for? 4. Who gets voted chief and how does the winner make the loser feel better? 5. Jack often tries to show himself as being powerful; tell me two ways he does so and then tell me two ways he fails.
Lord of the Flies Chapter Two 1. Who leads the choir and what are they called now? 2. What rules do they set up for the island? 3. Who is the boy with the purple birthmark and what happens to him? 4. What is their plan to get rescued, whose idea was it, how and why does it go wrong? 5. How do they start the fire? Who is the person with the best ideas who is never listened to and why are they ignored? Lord of the Flies Chapter Three 1. List and explain four details that show Jack is becoming more savage in the beginning of the chapter. 2. What are two problems the boys are having? What is turning the island into a bad place? 3. What is the only thing Jack will talk about? What does that say about him?
4. Describe Simon and give two examples of him appearing as a spiritual figure. 5. The chapter is bookended (begun and ended) by opposites; what are they. Explain the differences. CLUE: character and mood. Lord of the Flies Chapter Four 1. Give three signs the boys are becoming more savage. Explain them. 2. Describe the lifestyle of the littluns. What do you think they represent? 3. What is Roger doing? What does he want to do and what is stopping him? 4. Two mistakes are made. What are they and how did they happen? 5. Whose hair doesn t grow and what do you think this means? 6. Jack is very concerned with meat and hunting. What do you think meat symbolizes and why?
Lord of the Flies Chapter Five 1. How has Ralph changed from when he first arrived on the island? 2. Ralph calls a serious assembly, what is it all about? What does he specifically mention and what is the overall message? How did everyone take it? What are the two things causing problems? 3. Jack gives a speech too. How is his different than Ralph s? Piggy also gives a speech, what does he say they are afraid of? 4. Who else gives a speech and what is it about? 5. What does Simon say the beast is? What do the kids think of what he says? 6. What is a sign that shows us things are falling apart and dropping into lawlessness? 7. What does Piggy explain about Jack and what is his dire prediction? Lord of the Flies Chapter Six 1. At the beginning of the chapter the author describes other lights in the sky, that moved fast, winked or went out, though not even a faint popping came down from the battle fought at ten miles eight. What are these lights?
2. The title is Beast from the Air what is this beast from the air? The author describes its arrival at the beginning of the chapter what is it? What happened and how does it end up? 3. Jack gains power this chapter. How and why? 4. Simon has surprising insight about the beast. What is it? What does he imagine the beast is? What does this tell us about him? 5. Jack again proves his cowardice and immaturity. Explain. 6. Jack makes a discovery he is excited about what is it? What does Ralph think of it and why? What is Ralph s focus and what is Jack s? Lord of the Flies Chapter Seven 1. What are three signs the boys are less civilized? Who is aware of the change? Who isn t? 2. What is Simon s prophecy and who is not included in it? Who does this remind you of? 3. What game do the boys play and how does it change from being a game?
4. What does Jack suggest they use if they can t find a pig? What does this tell you and what is the response? 5. Who goes looking for the beast and why is each of the three going? (Each has a different reason) 6. What does the beast look like and what is it really? Where does it come from? Lord of the Flies Chapter Eight 1. Who called the assembly and why did he call it? 2. What happens at the meeting and what does Jack have to say about it? What does it tell us about him? 3. What is Simon s solution and what does it tell us about him? What is Piggy s solution and what does it say about him? What do the others think of it? Explain the change. 4. The chapter has more Biblical reference, Simon goes off alone (who is this Biblically), and Jack and his choir are described this way, Each of them wore the remains of a black cap and ages ago they had stood in two demure rows and their voices had been the song of angels. Jack then says, We ll hunt. I m going to be the chief. Who is the angel that took on the Christian god for rulership?
Finally we have Simon talking to The Lord of the Flies,, who is the lord of the flies and why is he called that? In Christian mythology Beelzebub was satan s name and it was originally translated to Lord of the Flies, how does this match up with the novel s Fly Lord? 5 Simon has a prophetic vision. What happens and what is its threat? Lord of the Flies Chapter Nine 1. What mood is the first paragraph of the chapter creating? What words does the author use to manufacture this mood? 2. What does Simon find out and what act of kindness does he perform? 3. What is Jack doing in this chapter? Ralph was a chief elected by the boys, but one of them, Jack sets himself up as something else. How is he described when we first see him? 4. What are three things that show the island is becoming more lawless in this chapter? (make sure to mention the conch) 5. We lose two things at the end of this chapter. What are they and what happens? 6. What is the mood in the final paragraph? What are some phrases that show the island mourning and taking care of Simon? Find parts that make it sound heavenly or holy.
Lord of the Flies Chapter Ten 1. Ralph s reaction to the dance is different then the others. How? What does Piggy say happened? What is Ralph s view? 2. What s going on with Wilfred? What does this tell us about Jack and Roger? 3. Ralph, Piggy, and Sam and Eric are doing a lot of lying. What are they lying about and why? 4. What is the proof that they knew what they were doing and what was Simon s final message? 5. There is a fight. What happens? What did the hunter s come for and what they get? What does this represent? Lord of the Flies Chapter Eleven 1. What does Roger start doing when Ralph blows the conch and begins to address the group? Highlight the following quote: Some source of power began to pulse in Roger s body. What do you think Golding means by this? 2. What s the overall significance of the conch being destroyed? How is Piggy s body taken out by the sea? How does this contrast from Simon s body? Lord of the Flies Chapter Twelve 1. What happens when Ralph encounters The Lord of the Flies? What emotions does he feel? What does he do to the skull?
2. How does Golding s reference to the hunters change once the naval officer appears? What words does he use instead of hunters and spears in this sense? What do you think is the importance of this? 3. What s ironic about the way the boys are rescued? Hint: Thinks about who lights the fire that enables them to be rescued.
4. What hints are we given about what happened to the boys?
