Positive & Productive Fly Casting Practice Introduction This first edition of Beyond Catching: Grass Drills would not have been possible without the initial instruction and coaching that I received from FFF Master Instructors Larry Allen, Dusty Sprague and Dayle Mazzarella. Their support and instruction, along with my patient and dedicated casting students, continue to improve and refine Beyond Catching: Grass Drills. Beyond Catching: Grass Drills are designed to support your goals of becoming a better fly caster by giving you the opportunity to actually put into practice what you have read about the science and art of casting a fly rod. I highly recommend that you support yourself in learning how to fly cast by signing up for group and perhaps even private lessons. Like any worthwhile endeavor in life, fly casting requires a personal investment of time and energy wherein you develop the basic casting skills necessary to enjoy casting in and of itself and with a little luck to go along with your improved casting skills catch a few fish.. Setting the Stage for Fun & Productive Casting Practice 1. Developing Your Long Term & Short Term Casting Goals & Practice Plan 2. Resources (2x 100 tapes, targets, rod/fly Line/yarn fly, drinks, clip board/pen, friend, video, et al) Casting Course Lay Out * See if you can set up your course in 5 minutes or less! * Set up your two 100 tapes/lane 6 apart * Set up your hoop targets at the basic level (30 ) * Your 6 lane is a broad parallel target & your hoop targets are the fish * Every cast has both a broad parallel lane & fish target * Adjust your parallel lanes & hoop targets as you improve Warm Ups Making your casting practice more than just practice it is a wonderful time at the park A walk - Dynamic stretching Getting a little exercise Positive visualization of your practice plan Model best casting practices Body>Rod Tip>Loop Positive & Productive Practice * basic level * Move to next level in 5 increments after 80% target success * Document your progress * Refer to the Grass Drills guidelines * Practice Grass Drills 1x-2x weekly with minute sessions

BEYOND CATCHING GRASS DRILLS I. Horizontal Casting Accuracy Drills 3 10 Reps - Pause between each rep and do a quality check & keep score Key areas: Watching your front and back cast to optimize your stroke & loop control One Hand Casting Only Step 1: Set Up Set your targets and stand back from the 50 tape mark with your rod tip reaching to the middle of the 6 parallel 100 tapes Set your stance, grip, thumb position, stroke length, hand, wrist, arm & shoulder {Little wrist movement, consistent and smooth application of power to an abrupt firm stop} Step 2: The Forward & Back Casts Set your 30 targets (between lines) Start with 30 of line in front of you & increase length based upon your accuracy scores Rod tip down on grass for both your front & back cast - line completely straight Keep a consistent stroke length Gradually accelerate your stroke to an abrupt firm stop on both your front and back cast Remember to keep your rod tip on a straight line path (SLP) on both your forward and back cast Keep slack out of your line & keep a tight loop with attention at a straight line rod tip path (SLP) Step 3: Keep Score Target cast between your 100 parallel tapes After each cast document your accuracy score (3 reps) Pause and analyze your body, rod and loop size after each cast Step 4: Increase Distance & Repeat Once you have achieved 80% accuracy with 30 move your targets to 35 and document score Once you have achieved 80% accuracy with 35 move your targets to 40 and document score Once you have achieved 80% accuracy with 40 move your targets to 45 + and document score *Quality Check* 1. Line: Was my loop well formed? Did the line lie out directly to and on the target? 2. Rod: Did I keep the rod tip on a straight line path (SLP)? Did I equally load/bend the rod on my forward and back cast? 3. Body: Did I practice good hand/arm/shoulder stroke mechanics? Did I gradually accelerate to an abrupt firm stop?

II. Vertical Casting Lay-Down Drills 3 10 reps - Pause between each rep and do a quality check & keep score Key areas: Watching your front cast & feeling your rod load and unload on your back cast to optimize your stroke & loop control One Hand Casting Only Step 1: Set Up Set your targets and stand at the very start of your 100 tape with your rod tip down to the grass and line straight without any slack to the first target (30 ). Set your stance, grip, thumb position, stroke length, hand, wrist, arm & shoulder {Little wrist movement, consistent and smooth application of power to an abrupt firm stop} Step 2: The Forward Lay Down Cast Start with 30 of line in front of you & increase length based upon your accuracy scores Rod tip down on grass - line completely straight without any slack Slowly bring rod tip to 10 o'clock. (Slowly accelerating) (Watching the line/leader) Remember to keep your rod tip on a straight line path (SLP) on both your forward and back cast Without a pause, at about 10 o'clock, increase rate of acceleration and come to an abrupt firm stop with your thumb and rod pointing at approximately 12 o'clock. {Begin to feel the rod load/bend the back cast ends when the fly leaves the grass} Wait for line to straighten, rod unloads-feel the load as you begin your stroke for the forward cast. Smoothly & consistently, accelerate forward cast to about 10 o'clock. Make a abrupt firm stop. Follow through after the loop is formed and passes overhead with the rod tip to the ground Step 3: Keep Score Target cast at targets between your 100 tapes After each cast document your accuracy score (3 reps) Pause and analyze your body, rod and loop size after each cast Step 4: Increase Distance & Repeat Once you have achieved 80% accuracy with 30 move your targets to 35 and document score Once you have achieved 80% accuracy with 35 move your targets to 40 and document score Once you have achieved 80% accuracy with 40 move your targets to 45 + and document score *Quality Check* 1. Did I gradually accelerate to a firm abrupt stop?

III. Vertical Casting Lay Down Cast Shooting Line Drills 3 10 Reps - Pause between each rep and do a quality check & keep score Key areas: Watching your front/back cast to optimize a positive stroke & loop control One Hand Casting Only Step 1: Set Up Set your targets and stand at the very start of your 100 tape with your rod tip down to the grass and line straight without any slack to the first target (30 ). Set your stance, grip, thumb position, stroke length, hand, wrist, arm & shoulder {Little wrist movement, consistent and smooth application of power to an abrupt firm stop} Step 2: Forward & Back False Casting Set your 30 target (between lines) Start with 30 of line in front of you & increase length based upon your accuracy scores Rod tip down on grass - line completely straight Have 50'-70 or so of line on the ground - out of the reel 1 pickup to back cast pause shoot line forward and let it lay. Repeat above from 2 nd new distance and record. Repeat above from 3 rd new distance and record. Step 3: Keep Score Target cast between your 100 tapes After each cast document your accuracy/distance score Pause and analyze your body, rod and loop shape/size after each cast Step 4: Increase Distance & Repeat Once you have achieved parallel 80% accuracy with 30 pick up cast do a second pick up cast and achieve 80% parallel accuracy before doing your third and final cast at 80% parallel accuracy and record your distance for each of the three casts *Quality Check* 1. Line: Was my loop well formed? Did the line lie out directly to and on the target? 2. Rod: Did I keep the rod tip on a straight line path? Did I equally load/bend the rod on my forward and back cast? 3. Body: Did I practice good hand/arm/shoulder stroke mechanics? Did I gradually accelerate to an abrupt firm stop?

IV. Horizontal False Casting Hauling & Shooting Line Drills 3 10 Reps - Pause between each rep and do a quality check & keep score Key areas: Watching your front & back cast to optimize a positive stroke & loop control Two Hand Casting Step 1: Set Up Set your targets and stand back from the 50 tape mark with your rod tip reaching to the middle of the 6 parallel 100 tapes Set your stance, grip, thumb position, stroke length, hand, wrist, arm & shoulder {Little wrist movement, consistent and smooth application of power to an abrupt firm stop} Step 2: Forward & Back False Casting Set your 30 target (between lines) Start with 30 of line in front of you & increase length based upon your accuracy scores Rod tip down on grass - line completely straight without any slack False cast about 30' of line outside rod tip. Have 30'-40 or so of line on the ground - out of the reel. Use the line hand to control the line. (Keep it close to the reel (less than 1 ') False cast back and forth with good acceleration, abrupt firm stops, and appropriate pause. After the forward stop, release a little or a lot line out by letting line slip through your line hand fingers. Clamp down when the desired amount of line had been "fed". Step 3: Keep Score Target cast between your 100 tapes After each cast document your accuracy score (3 reps) Pause and analyze your body, rod and loop size after each cast Step 4: Increase Distance & Repeat Once you have achieved 80% accuracy with 30 move your targets to 35 and document score Once you have achieved 80% accuracy with 35 move your targets to 40 and document score Once you have achieved 80% accuracy with 40 move your targets to 45 + and document score *Quality Check* 1. Line: Was my loop well formed? Did the line lie out directly to and on the target? Did I shoot the line? How far? 2. Rod: Did I keep the rod tip on a straight line path? Did I equally load/bend the rod on my forward and back cast? 3. Body: Did I practice good hand/arm/shoulder stroke mechanics? Did I gradually accelerate to an abrupt firm stop?

V. Horizontal & Vertical Casting Double Haul Drills 3 10 Reps - Pause between each rep and do a quality check & keep score Key areas: Watching your front/back cast to optimize a positive stroke & loop control Two Hand Casting Step 1: Set Up Set your targets and stand back from the 50 tape mark with your rod tip reaching to the middle of the 6 parallel 100 tapes Set your stance, grip, thumb position, stroke length, hand, wrist, arm & shoulder {Little wrist movement, consistent and smooth application of power to an abrupt firm stop} Step 2: Forward & Back False Casting Set your 30 target (between lines) Start with 30 of line in front of you & increase length based upon your accuracy scores Rod tip down on grass - line completely straight Start with back cast stroke. Line hand near 1st guide. Begin stroke, consistent acceleration. As rod reaches maximum bend (around 1 o'clock), abruptly pull line hand about one foot, as stroke is finished and you make a abrupt firm stop. This is the "Down" in "Down- Up". Cast forward after a short pause, and repeat. (Single Haul) Add "Up" to backcast when you are ready. Now add "Down" to forward 11:00 and then "Down- Up". Step 3: Keep Score Target cast between your 100 tapes After each cast document your accuracy score (3 reps) Pause and analyze your body, rod and loop size after each cast Step 4: Increase Distance & Repeat Once you have achieved 80% accuracy with 40 move your targets to 45 and document score Once you have achieved 80% accuracy with 45 move your targets to 50 and document score Once you have achieved 80% accuracy with 50 move your targets to 55 +and document score *Quality Check* 1. Did I pull the line approximately 1:00 on the back cast? Did I pull the line approximately 11:00 on the front cast? Did I gradually accelerate to an abrupt firm stop?

VI. Back Cast Drills 3 10 Reps - Pause between each rep and do a quality check Horizontal/Off Vertical - One Hand Casting/ Two Hand Casting with Double Haul * Target cast feet of line outside the rod tip (front) 2. Open stance to see back cast 3. Initiate back cast coming to an abrupt stop at approximately the 1:00 position 4. Cast a tight loop 5. Deliver the fly to the target or just let line fall to ground VII. Quick Cast Drills 3 10 Reps - Pause between each rep and do a quality check Horizontal/Off Vertical - One Hand Casting/ Two Hand Casting with Double Haul 1. Start with fly in hand and 12 total feet of line and leader out of the rod tip with 40 feet of fly line laying at your feet. 2. Swing fly and line away and back until fly is pulled from fingers. 3. Do two or three false casts while shooting line back and front. 4. Cast a tight loop on both of your front and back casts 5. Deliver the fly to the target NOTES FOR SELF.. * If your forward cast isn't doing what it's supposed to, look at your back cast! Go back to the Pick Up and Lay Down Drill and work on stopping the rod with the thumb pointing up. * Turn and watch your backcast occasionally. Have you paused long enough for it to straighten? * If you have a rainbow shaped open loop, you are most likely using too much wrist. Check your wrist and create a more straight line rod path. Remember the analogy of scraping your thumbnail along a ceiling. * If you are getting a tailing loop, remember the bottle on a stick and the paint brush analogy! (Consistent, smooth acceleration to an abrupt firm stop!)
