Newsletter of the Truckee River Flyfishers TRF Mission Statement We are dedicated to: improving and promoting the sport of fly fishing in Nevada. Promote and encourage the conservation of game fish, especially wild trout, through the betterment of the streams and lakes everywhere. Encourage and assist our youth to become fly fishers and true sportspersons. Inside this issue: President s Letter Fly Tiers Round Table Foam Hopper Prospects Picnic Members Ship Application Upcoming Events: Oct 16, Pyramid Lake Picnic, 1:00, Crosby s Lodge BOD meeting Nov 3, 2016 October 2016 President s Letter October 2016 The month of October brings us the spawning season of the big legendary wild brown trout of the Truckee River. This year with the low flows at 94cfs in Reno, these big fish will have a little tougher time to do their thing. Please be careful not to tread on their redds! It is unethical to fish over these areas, again please stay away! The opening week at Pyramid Lake was very good for numbers of fish. Fishing from shore produced many slot fish and boating in deeper water produced some bigger ones. Be careful when fishing deeper than 40 feet because trout hooked at or deeper than this sometimes do not decompress and can get bloated. The opening day IRON FLY event at Crosby Lodge was the most exciting and enthusiastic fly tying event I ve ever seen! These guys were full of energy. They were very respectful and cleaned up everything better than they found it. Pig Farm Ink and Pyramid Fly Co. organized the event. They are looking to make it an annual event. Special thanks to Jerry Harding, Terrell Ogburn, Lori Lynch, Joe Cendagorta, Dave Patula and organizer Mark Warren for representing our club at the annual Truckee River clean-up. Check the newsletter for the next general meeting and Fly Tying Roundtable.. Time to fish! Doug O. GM Meeting Nov 16, Mike Sevon will do Little Know Water in Nevada BOD meeting Dec 1, 2016
Page 2 The Angler s Line The Motley Crew did great work at the Truckee River Cleanup. Joe Cendagorta, Lori Lynch, Mark Warren, Jerry Harding, Dave Patula, Terrel Ogburn, Doug Ouellette By Mike Hoffman Fly Tiers Roundtable Due to personal developments I will be unable to put on the Fly Tiers Roundtable meetings for the remainder of this fall season. Hopefully I can put these issues behind me in the near future at which time we can resume this longstanding program. If you have questions about the Roundtables or tying in general give me a call/ ? Let me or any Board member know if there is a club member out there that would be interested in running the Roundtables now or in the future. Great news, last night at the Board of Directs meeting, Mike O Brien said that he would chair this event going forward, Stu Chandler is going to assist him. It was too late this month to put a roundtable together but they will begin again on November 9 th. Stu Chandler joined the TRF Board of Director last night. It will be great having him on the board.
Newsletter of the Truckee River Flyfishers Page 3 PICNIC Our annual picnic will be on Sunday, October 16 th. You guessed it, it will be at Pyramid Lake and we will have lunch at Crosby s. There is no cost for the lunch. There will be a raffle. Lunch will be Tri Tip. An earlier went out about cost. That is the cost to the club but there is no cost to attend. The raffle will have some great prizes, including two boxes of flies tied by Elliott Gritton, a long time member of the club and Cal Bird Cup winner. Elliott has tied flies for our raffles for many years and has appeared at past Flytiers Roundtables, in fact it was Elliott who first chaired the roundtables more years ago than even I can remember. He has written many articles on fly tying for the newsletter. Our thanks go to him for all his support..
Page 4 The Angler s Line October Prospects by Wes Ong October 2016 Prospects Truckee River: Flows have been consistently low for the last couple of weeks, the Nevada side really hurting with only 80 cfs. There is hardly enough to cover the backs of the existing fish. Give it a rest and fish the California side, small offerings or big ones. Little Truckee: The pressure has subsided here but flows have been down for the last month. Flows are lower than normal but what s unusual about that. Beatis hatches mid-day and a good time to swing a soft hackle thru some of the tail outs. Boca, Stampede, & Prosser Res. Even though capacities are at a historic minimum, there should still be some run up activity. Browns have already moved into the LT and a large offering could yield a big fish. Lake Davis: There are not a lot of fish left in the lake due to the reduced number of fish being put in here. Not only are numbers down but they are planting fingerlings instead of catchables. Bright side is if you get a fish it is likely to be in the 18 to 24 inch range! Frenchman Res: Same Daphnia hatch happen here last year and I expect it to happen again. Late September fishing was decent in the northeastern part of the lower half of the lake and Turkey point has been producing consistently since Labor Day. Pyramid Lake: The long awaited opener has arrived and the crowds had the opening weekend packed! Generally not much fly action this time of year but, those who find the bait do get bite once in a while. Look for the lake to turn over toward end of this month! East Walker River: Flows have been low for such a long time. I don t know anyone who has fished here. This is generally the time to fish a streamer, stay off the brown reds! Eagle Lake: This is a good place for information on Eagle Lake. The water is way down. Board of Directors & TRF Officers President: Doug Ouellette calvadaflyfishing@sbcglobal.net Vice President: M a r k W a r r e n markeraw@charter.net Secretary Tom Smith edsontiger@aol.com Treasurer: Tom Smith & Mark Warren N e w s l e t t e r T o m S m i t h Conservation open Web Master: Curt Kamada fishncurt@hotmail.com Biologists on Staff: Mark W. and Mike S. Board Member Mike O Brien avidflyfisher@aol.com Board Member Stu Chandler Lake Almanor: Fishing here has been good all summer so this should equate to a good fall bite. Hamilton Branch area has been crowded and should continue to be that way. Pond Smelt patterns have been producing in the Prattville area. Smallie fishing should be good until the water temperatures start to fall.
Newsletter of the Truckee River Flyfishers Page 5 FOAM HOPPER Early fall with its sunny days, breezy afternoons and a lot of grasshoppers results in some of the best hopper fishing. This foam hopper pattern is quick and easy to tie. I highly recommend having a few in your fly box this time of year. Hopper Season HOOK: TMC 100 or your favorite dry fly hook, Size 12 8 THREAD: Tan 8/0 BODY: Foam, Tan 2mm, 1/8 strips LEGS: Spirit River Tarantu-leggs, Medium brown WING: Orvis deer body hair, Yellow 1. Approximately 1½ inches from end of foam strip pierce hook point through middle of foam strip. 2. Place hook in vice and slide foam strip back to hook bend. 3. Attach thread near hook eye and wrap back to the start of the hook bend. 4. Fold long end of foam strip forward under hook shank. At the hook eye make a hole in the middle of foam strip with a bodkin and insert hook eye through the hole. 5. Using Zap A Gap coat the top of hook shank and ¼ inch up on each end of foam strip. 6. Fold foam strip over it s self on top of hook shank and squeeze. 7. Make 2 firm thread wraps to anchor foam strips at the start of the hook bend. 8. Make a soft diagonal wrap forward to the ¾ mark of the hook shank then make 2 firm wraps. 9. Make a soft diagonal wrap forward to the ½ mark of the hook shank then make 2 firm wraps. 10. Make a soft diagonal wrap forward to the ¼ mark of hook shank then make 2 firm wraps. 11. Make a soft diagonal wrap back returning thread to the ½ mark of hook shank. 12. Pick up back end of foam strip and cut at an angle to create the butt end of the fly. 13. At the ½ way mark attach rubber legs to each side of hook shank. Return thread forward to the ¼ mark and secure front legs. Trim rear legs so they extend just beyond body and trim front legs so they extend just beyond hook eye. 14. Stack a small bunch of deer hair and measure to length of the body. Trim excess. 15. Attach hair wing with butt ends extending just forward of tying thread and secure. 16. Whip finish. Try using two hoppers on same rod, large top fly with a smaller dropper. Mike O Brien
