7 Ocober 5h. 19- Freiherr (Baron von der Heyde Professor an del' Universia Wurzburg. Dear Mr. Silberberg! I jus received your kind leer of Sepember 13h, when I came back from Spain where I had o lecure in summer schools. May I hank you very much for your leer and for wha you said. The Colonel von der Heyde you heard of when you were in he viciniy of Monscahu was indeed me, and I was aken prisoner by he U.S. 47h. Infanry Regimen. I was reaed Col. Randy Bryan, Re SW 85 Ave Miami, FL, THE OCTOFOIL Traveling clown road 01 hisory A MEMORY FROM THE PAST-BATTLE OF THE BULGE Those of you who were presen in he Ninh and specifically he 47h. Infanry, more specifically Company I of he 47h. may remember he siuaion inmid-december1944. MISSION- TO DISRUPT TRAFFIC On he 21s, a small group of German parachuiss were rounded up by Company I of he 47h. which was searching he own of Monschau. In all, 80 prisoners were capured. These parachuiss were rying o reurn o he German lines afer having landed in he Eupen area. I was he remainder of Task Force VON DER HEYDTE. Their mission was o disrup raffic over he Eupen- Malmedy road. I was commanded by Colonel Baron Von del' Heyde whose command consised of 5 companies of 150 men each. The mission was a failure and only 200 men reached he rendezvous afer jumping. The siuaion was obscure o Heyde and he old his men o a bandon heir equipmen and head for he German lines in groups of hree men each. PRIZE BOOMERANGS The reason ha so many of hese parachuiss were capured in and around Monschau is one of he prize boomerangs of he war. Heyde's radio had broken down and he was ou of conac. The las he had heard was ha Monschau was in German hands. The res is hisory. The 47h. mopped hem up in groups. On 22d. of December he 47h. received a.., message as follows: " ried o mee German roops, I surrender because 1",-, am hur and ill and a he end of my physical forces. Please be kind enough o send me a docor and an ambulance, because I am lying in bed a Bouscheens and am waiing for your held and your orders." VALIANT REGIMENT I was signed by Von der Heyde. The 47h. rounded up he remainder of he parachuiss including he wounded Heyde. I is of grea credi o he valian regimen ha Heyde was reaed so humanely during his period. Heyde was reaed by docors of he 47h and inerrogaed by Cap. Dave Silberberg, Chief of he 47h's M.l. De. Le's skip forward o a few years ago. The following leer from Heyde was received by Silberberg. ll of us in he 47h. should be more and more proud of our regimen, especially when considering he inense ani-german feeling we had during December 1944: by your comrades in a very human, chivalric way and all help was given o me. So, I am glad o hear a leas if one American who served wih his gallan regimen, and o express my graiude I feel oward his comrades. Your leer is proof ha he spiri I could experience when I was aken prisoner, was inspiring he whole regimen, and your kind and sympaheic words really gave me grea saisfacion a he momen I was aacked in such an insolen way by some old Nazis. I hope o hear from you again, and am wih bes regards. Sincerely Yours, Baron von del' heyde (Signed) TWO GREAT COMMANDERS Looking, back on my 33 years of miliary service, I am mos proud of my five years in he 47h Regimen. A grea deal of credi o his fine regimen should go o is wo grea commanders; General Randle who rained i in is infancy and General George Smyhe, he grea Army All-American quarerback who kep i on he righ rack.
