5 Directions to Barkell Ranch Mile 0: Idaho State Highway 55 & Warren Wagon Road (located at the north end of the city of McCall by Lardo s Restaurant). Mile 0-28: Take Warren Wagon Road, winding up and around Lower & Upper Payette Lakes, & then over Secesh Summit. Mile 28: The road turns to gravel/dirt road and the turn-off for Burgdorf Hot Springs and French Creek is on the left. Keep going straight towards Warren. Mile 38: Steamboat Summit elevation 6996 Mile 38-43: Steamboat summit to the historic mining town of Warren, The Winter Inn is not currently open, so fill up with gas in town and bring a lunch! Mile 43-45: Warren to the Bear Lake & Pony Meadows turn-off, keep going straight towards Warren Summit. Mile 45-47: Warren Summit, a 3-way fork in the road. The far left goes to Smith Knob Lookout (road not usually maintained). The middle road goes to the private South Fork Ranch. The right road goes to The Barkell Ranch, the South Fork Guard Station (old Forest Service post), the South Fork of the Salmon River, & continues to the Elk Summit Road onto Big Creek & Yellowpine (early July-Sept). Mile 47-60: Turning right at the summit, then wind down Pony Creek into the breaks of the South Fork of the Salmon River Canyon. It is approximately 59 total miles from Highway 55 to the property at the mailboxes. You can park near the mailboxes and walk around the property from there. Currently, the owners use an access road down the SF road further to their properties. That road turns left just before the SF road turns into Pony Creek. The residents do not want people driving on this road because you need to drive along the side of the airstrip to access the property. This air strip is maintained by use only, so the residents appreciate not driving on unless it s absolutely necessary (especially if it s muddy). Thank you for respecting their wishes. Mile If you want to head to the river, the road continues and crosses Pony Creek & heads up stream to the Bridge over the South Fork at the old Guard Station. Here you ll find a campground, swimming hole & the beginning (or end) of the Elk Summit Road.
