Filling the Void in Natural History at Doncaster Museum Pip Seccombe and Louise Hill Doncaster Naturalists' Society Recording Doncaster's wildlife since 1880
First curator Dr H. H. Corbett Doncaster Scientific Society Dr Corbett s persistence, with other members of the Doncaster Scientific Society, led to a public museum being opened in Doncaster. Doncaster Museum was first opened in 1900 in a small room in the old Guildhall.
Dr Corbett s collections were donated to the museum, but with one exception, his herbarium, little survives. One of the pressed plants is shown here. It is Stinking Hellebore. Labelled Warmsworth Cliffs, it was collected in May 1899.
Doncaster Museum In 1909 the Museum moved to the ground floor of Beechfield House. From 1955 the Museum ran a small zoo in the grounds of Beechfield. In 1962 the Beechfield premises were closed and in 1964 the replacement Museum & Art Gallery was opened on Chequer Road. This was first purpose-built museum building to be entirely funded by a local authority since 1945.
The collections Morehouse Shell Collection Elsie May Morehouse was born in 1884 and lived most of her life in Doncaster. Her interest in conchology began in the 1920s. The collection represents the lifework of Mrs Morehouse a notable Yorkshire conchologist of the twentieth century.
Taxidermy Collections 'Museum animals' GCSE Art Class 1987 Plus animal skins and skulls, and bird egg collections.
Animal Heads Collection or is it The 'Spirit' Collection?

The end of an Era By 2007 there were only two natural history staff with another part-time post to assist with maintenance of the Recorder Database. In September 2008 the post of Keeper of Environmental Records was deleted and the Environmental Records Database was moved to the DMBC Planning Department.
The end of an Era By 2007 there were only two natural history staff with another part-time post to assist with maintenance of the Recorder Database. In September 2008 the post of Keeper of Environmental Records was deleted and the Environmental Records Database was moved to the DMBC Planning Department. In 2011 the final member of natural history staff (Museum Officer Natural Sciences) left as further cost savings began to be imposed on DMBC budgets, thus bringing to an end a century of Natural History endeavour at the Museum.
Since 2011 there have been NO Natural Historians on the staff of Doncaster Museum
Various studies which use museum collections, research files, archives and literature.
Filling the Void The Doncaster Naturalists' Society still has strong links with the Museum. Six meetings (open to the public) at the Museum each Winter. Maintains a 'foot in the door' for Natural History at the Museum. Has direct involvement curating the Natural History Archive. This work is done on an entirely voluntary basis.
The Natural History Archive
Cataloguing Cataloguing and sorting the Archives Since Nov 2009 there have been monthly cataloguing and sorting sessions each Winter.
Indexing An electronic (searchable) index has been created.
Enquiries and Research We offer natural history enquiry support to assist Museum staff with queries from members of the public. We facilitate researchers who want to use the archive, or the library of journals, and we can arrange access to the Collections. Enquiries Log Book
Specimens brought to the Museum Photograph of a 'Mystery' beetle brought in to the Museum by a member of the public. Front Desk Museum staff used reference books (bought by the outgoing Natural Science Officer) to assist the enquirer with their search for an identification. Narrowed down to two possible species, one of which, Oedemera nobilis (pictured), is expanding its range across the UK. Photo Didier Descouens Creative Commons Photograph and tentative i.d. sent to Doncaster Biological Records Centre.
Records from the Public Received in the Nats inbox 8th Jan 2014: 'Just to let you know, I had a Peacock Butterfly this afternoon in Barnby Dun (DN3). I have never had one out this early before. Just thought you may be interested' Miss B. Record forwarded to the Biological Records Database. Reply sent by Bob Marsh, of Doncaster BRC, to Miss B. 10th Jan 2014 'Many thanks for your record I will add this to our database. As you can see from the histogram I ve attached, we have records from all months of the year, with marked peaks in spring and late summer. The earliest record is in fact dated 1/1/2007, so we won t be able to beat that as the earliest record!'
Academic Research Enquiry June 2010 Enquiry from J.B.McCormick, M.D. and Mrs. Suzanne C. McCormick Co-directors of Science Heritage Ltd. USA. Researching the work of M.H. Stiles of Doncaster Scientific Society, later to be known as the Doncaster Naturalists' Society. An example of M.H. Stiles Microscopic photography
M.H. Stiles gave a presentation on 'The Microscope and how to use it' to the inaugural meeting of the Doncaster Scientific Society. As Secretary, he also wrote the Minutes of the first meeting in 1880.
What we cannot do is provide expertise on the collections, curate or conserve the Natural History collections and exhibits. Museum volunteer carrying out the delicate task of cleaning a drawer from the entomology collection.
Thank you to all the members of the Society who have volunteered their time and to the staff of Doncaster Museum who facilitate our work.
