3 WELCOME TO BUCKEYE UNITED FLY FISHERS Welcome to Buckeye United Fly Fishers. Our club was founded many years ago to promote the sport of fly-fishing, instruct those who were new to the sport, and teach conservation to protect our valuable resources. As a member of B.U.F.F. you have wonderful opportunities to learn the art of fly tying, rod building, and net building--just to mention a few. You will have fly-casting instructors to either teach the novice from the very start or fine-tune particular casting problems. If you are interested in a specific subject related to fly fishing, we will have the answer for you. All you have to do is ask. Some of the veterans will be more than willing to tell you "all they know". To keep B.U.F.F. a fun club for everyone, you are encouraged to get involved in the many club activities that are available to you. Join some of the committees that are looking for volunteers. You don't have to be an expert to join in and give a helping hand. Joining in helps you meet other members, some new and some that have been in the club for many years. You will be the kind of club member that makes B.U.F.F. a fun club, an educational club, and a club that has a vast reservoir of new and exciting ideas. Welcome! Mission Statement Buckeye United Fly Fishers, Inc. is a charitable, non-profit corporation organized under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, and incorporated in the State of Ohio. The mission of the Organization is to promote the preservation, conservation and wise use of our fishing waters and game fish, to provide education about the sport of fly fishing, and to assist in the protection and improvement of our natural resources. All donations to Buckeye United Fly Fishers, Inc. are tax deductible as charitable donations. 1
4 Introduction to the Buckeye United Fly Fishers History - Buckeye United Fly Fishers, Inc., is a non-profit organization located in Cincinnati, Ohio, organized under section 501( c )( 3 ) of the Internal Revenue Code and incorporated in the State of Ohio for the preservation and wise use of our fishing waters and game fish and to assist in the protection and improvement of our natural resources. BUFF has been in existence since 1975 and a major influence in the growing popularity of fly fishing in greater Cincinnati and tri-state area (Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky). The inception of the club was prompted by a local fishing shop called Mickey Finn's-long since out of business. Several formation meetings were held in the office of Ron Smith who came up with the name BUFF. The B in BUFF could have stood for Buckeye or Bluegrass--being desperate for members, all bases had to be covered. A decade later, membership boomed. To facilitate logistics and better manage future growth, a sister club was formed: Northern Kentucky Fly Fishers. The two clubs are autonomous but frequently participate in each other's programs. NKFF is an FFF affiliate and a member of the Southern Council of FFF. BUFF is an affiliated member of the International Federation of Fly Fishers. BUFF is one of the larger members of the Ohio Council of the FFF. In addition to affiliation to FFF, many of our members actively support the local Trout Unlimited chapter. Cincinnati, Ohio is conveniently located within several hours drive to most of the country's prime warm and cold water streams. We also have some prime warm water fisheries here locally. Club Activities - Fishing Trips Every year BUFF organizes traveling fly fishing trips for bass, trout, and steelhead. The objective is to provide exposure to people, places, techniques and equipment for both new and experienced fly fishers. Our travels have taken us to Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and West Virginia. We also offer one-day local trips as an easy introduction to fly fishing. 2
5 Training - Members helping members is the strength of our club. Without hesitation, veterans freely share their experience. Volunteers conduct beginners, intermediate and advanced fly tying classes, rod building, casting, and classes on constructing landing nets. Social -A general membership meeting is held on the second Wednesday of each month at the Ronald Reagan Lodge at Voice of America Park in West Chester. A catered dinner is served (optional) followed by a short business meeting and a presentation on some aspect of fly fishing. Occasionally, meetings are held outdoors on a local stream in conjunction with NKFF. During the month there are Tie and Lie sessions around the Cincinnati area where members and walk-ins gather to tie a fly and tell tall fishing tales. The leader supplies the materials for the featured fly. Walk-ins and onlookers are invited to give fly tying a try. Community Service BUFF is actively involved in community service activities such as Parky s Farm youth fishing, high school casting and tying classes, Boy Scout merit badge counseling, Great Outdoors Weekend, Metroparks of Butler County events, and others. In addition to donating our time, BUFF makes financial contributions to organizations such as "Fishing Has No Boundaries", a group that provides a day of fishing for the handicapped. BUFF donates time and resources to conservation activities conducted by soil and water organizations, county and local government projects, and Trout Unlimited. We participate in stream cleanup activities and stream quality monitoring on the Little Miami River. We donate money to conservation groups like Little Miami Conservancy, Three Valley Conservation Trust, Rivers Unlimited, Izaak Walton League, Scenic Rivers Protection Fund, and others. BUFF works with the VA Hospital in Cincinnati to meet with service men and women monthly to teach fly tying and organizes fly fishing trips with the vets during the summer. BUFF and NKFF actively participate in Project Healing Waters, an organization providing therapeutic fly fishing activities for wounded veterans. Casting for Recovery (CFR) is a national non-profit, support and educational program for women who are breast cancer survivors. BUFF is involved in the staffing and fund raising to support CFR's yearly retreat. Fourteen ladies are chosen at random from statewide applications to attend the retreat at no cost to them. Buff members teach fly tying, fly casting and then help participants put into practice what they have learned. 3
6 Conservation BUFF is committed to the conservation and preservation of our environment. Every year our organization makes donations to approved conservation organizations. Recent donations have been made to Clermont County Soil & Water Conservation, Three Valley Conservation Trust, Rivers Unlimited, Friends of the Great Miami, Little Miami Conservancy, Izaak Walton League, Mill Creek Watershed Council, Scenic Rivers Protection Fund. BUFF also donates to fish and wildlife departments in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana to support their conservation efforts. BUFF members actively engage in local stream quality monitoring activities, primarily on the Little Miami River. We periodically monitor the streams and provide data needed to ensure the vitality of our streams and wildlife. Greater Cincinnati Fly Fishing Show Since 1989, BUFF has sponsored the Greater Cincinnati Fly Fishing Showy, usually on the first Saturday in February. It is the largest fly fishing themed show in the tri-state with around 1000 visitors from the region and surrounding states. The show is a great opportunity for everyone from novice to experienced fly fisher to learn about fly fishing techniques, resources, gear, and places to fish. The venue has shifted in recent years to the Oasis Golf Club & Conference Center in Loveland, Ohio, in order to accommodate growth in the size of the show. The show is family friendly with lots of kids activities. The show promotes the sport of fly fishing, stream conservation, and outdoor recreation and attracts over 70 exhibitors and vendors (outfitters and guides, fly rods, fly tying supplies, kayaks, lodges, conservation groups, custom nets, flies, books, jewelry, fly fishing tools and supplies, and more). The fly fishing show brings in nationally acclaimed speakers for symposiums, fly tying demonstrations, and casting demonstrations and features an indoor casting pond. Banquet BUFF holds a fund-raising banquet each spring known as the Cabin Fever Relief Banquet. The banquet is an opportunity for food, fun, socialization with club members, and to recognize club volunteers and officers for their past contributions to the club s activities. As a part of our banquet, there are raffles and auctions of donated equipment, materials, guided trips and non-fly fishing articles. Monthly Meetings BUFF monthly meetings are held the 2 nd Wednesday each month at the Ronald Reagan Lodge in Voice of America Park in West Chester, Ohio.
