1 BSA Troop 189 SHOOT, FISH, CAMP Event Guidebook v August 2017 Alexandria Chapter, Izaak Walton League 2729 Garrisonville Rd, Stafford, VA Sunrise 06:31, Sunset 19:47 Average High 86F, Average Low 67F Chief Instructor/POC: Rob Dotson, ASM, NRA CRSO & Rifle Instructor, USA Archery Level 2 Instructor, robertcdotson@gmail.com
2 Concept Archery and rifle shooting are two of the most popular events for Boy Scouts, but among the most difficult to run as a troop due to training, equipment, and location requirements. Our troop is fortune to have access to a cache of gear and several trained Scouters to serve as instructors and range safeties. The final piece of the puzzle location has been secured through the Alexandria Chapter of the Izaak Walton League. Founded in 1922, the Izaak Walton League is one of the earliest conservation organizations in America. More information on the League can be found at The Alexandria Chapter is a very active chapter with a beautiful piece of property featuring a clubhouse; outdoor archery, rifle/pistol, and shotgun ranges; stocked pond; hiking trails; and campsites. Only members and their guests have access to the complex. More information on the Alexandria Chapter can be found at Troop Schedule of Events Friday 18:00 Link up at Pattie Elementary (already fed) 18:30 Depart 19:00 Arrive at 2729 Garrionsville Rd, Stafford, VA; set up camp in woodland sites 21:30 Cracker barrel & program meeting 22:00 Lights out Saturday 07:00 Troop wake up, breakfast, & personal hygiene 09:00 Program options: NRA Basic Rifle Course/BSA Rifle Merit Badge Classroom (max 6 students) BSA Archery Merit Badge Classroom (max 8 students) Archery Open Archery Range (current merit badge holders) 12:30 Lunch 13:00 Program options: Rifle Qualification Rifle Range (max 6 students) Archery Qualification Archery Range (max 8 students) Catch and Release Pond (current merit badge holders) 17:00 Prepare dinner 18:00 Dinner at campsite/clean up 19:00 Open program 20:30 Campfire & cracker barrel 22:00 Lights out Sunday 07:00 Troop wake up, light breakfast, & personal hygiene 07:45 Scouts Own Service 08:00 Break camp 08:30 Service project 11:30 Depart 12:00 Arrive at Pattie 2
3 Safety & Emergency Procedures Buddy Team & Youth Protection All Scouts will utilize the buddy system at all times, reporting to their Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol Leader, &/or Scoutmaster if they are departing the Troop s immediate area for any reason Non-Scout youth participating in Troop activities must be supervised by their parent or guardian All adults providing direction supervision of Scouts (aside from their own child(ren)) require current BSA Youth Protection Training found at Tornado If you hear or see a tornado coming, warn others, & take cover right away If you're in a building, go to the middle of the lowest level away from windows (bathroom/closet ideal) Get under something sturdy, such as a heavy table, hold on, & stay there until the danger has passed Use your other arm & hand to protect your head & neck from debris If there is no building nearby, lie flat in a low spot & use your arms & hands to protect your head Lightning The safest place to be during a lightning storm is inside a relatively large, fully enclosed building Avoid bodies of water, open areas, high ground, tall objects (trees, light poles), small shelters in open areas, & metal objects If you are outdoors & lightning is in the immediate area, crouch down with feet close together, keep your head down, & cover your ears to minimize hearing damage from thunder Stay at least 100 feet away from other individuals in the area to prevent bolts from jumping from person to person Injuries Scouts treat minor injuries using their individual first aid kit For serious injuries & hurry cases, Scouts perform immediate aid, & call for assistance with three short whistle blasts The first Scouters to arrive on the scene provides additional immediate aid as required, & determines whether medical evacuation is required by ambulance (911) or troop vehicle Nearest emergency care: Stafford Hospital, 101 Hospital Center Blvd, Stafford, VA; (540)
