Electrofishing and Kick Seining Efforts for Invasive Signal Crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) on Kodiak Island, Alaska Kelly Krueger, Sun aq Tribe of Kodiak KAMSS April 21, 2017
Signal Crayfish- Background Native species to the Pacific Northwest. Introduced and thriving in Europe Prefer fresh and brackish water with temperatures below 25 C (77 F) and high dissolved oxygen. Tolerate broad salinity range Prefer rocky-bottomed areas that are also utilized by salmonids and trout Can burrow extensively into stream banks and cause stream bank collapse, and reduced light penetration Burrow in Buskin Lake, July 2016.
Predatory species and consume algae, benthic insects, and woody debris May also feed on fish eggs, fry and larger fish Diet/Life History Mating and egg laying (normally ) occurs in October Young signal crayfish attached to mother, July Eggs hatch in following spring and stay attached to the mother for three moults May live as long as 20 years Young signal crayfish in Buskin Lake, August Photo credit: Blythe Brown.
Brown/blue coloration Smooth, round claws White at joint of claws
Location Buskin Watershed- located 5 miles southwest of the city of Kodiak Buskin Lake Bear Creek Approximately 11.2 miles of stream Lake Catherine Devils Creek Buskin River Lake Louise Lake Genivieve Devils Creek Project Area
Signal Crayfish on Kodiak Island Only known breeding population in Alaska is in Buskin River & Lake First noted presence in Buskin Watershed in 2002 Alaska Department of Fish & Game set traps in , did not capture any crayfish Kodiak Soil and Water Conservation District trapped in Confirmed breeding population with capture of gravid female
Tribal Concerns Buskin Watershed is one of the largest subsistence salmon fisheries in the Kodiak region 4,800 salmon are harvested each year (on average) Salmon fishing and consumption is an integral part of the Tribe s culture Applied for and received funding from the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Invasive Species Program One year study for $55,834 Signal crayfish consume a dead salmon in the Sproat River, British Columbia 1 1
Crayfish Project Design Goal: assess the effectiveness of electrofishing and kick seining for signal crayfish in Buskin Watershed Secondary goal: To determine where the crayfish are located within the watershed Crew surveyed a mile of stream per week kick seining and flipping over rocks Photo credit: Blythe Brown Any crayfish encountered would be sampled (species, total length and carapace length, sex, life stage, location) and removed from the watershed

Future Work Applied for funds from USFWS Tribal Wildlife Grant on 9/01/16 Proposal focuses on learning more about the population dynamics of signal crayfish: Diet Will conduct stable isotope analyses on 100 signal crayfish Movement Will tag 15 signal crayfish in mid-summer and early fall to plot the seasonal habitat use Distribution Will utilize a snorkeling and scuba diving crew to delineate spatial distribution over time 1 Signal crayfish with PIT tag 1 Funding decision should come this month Snorkeling survey transect design
Future Work Continued Applied for funds from BIA Invasive Species Program not funded Environmental DNA (edna) Optimize a method for crayfish detection Develop water sampling protocols and laboratory analyses Crayfish in the Classroom Semester long research project at local elementary school Students will learn about harm of invasive species and how to conduct research 2017 Fieldwork Electrofishing (similar to last year)
