MEET CODY ABOUT THE SEA Under the depths of the KwaZulu-Natal sea Lives a blue-eyed hermit crab by the name of Cody. With one of his claws much larger than the next, Follow Cody on an adventure to meet all kinds of critters He covers his shell to protect himself best. Sure, I m quite small but I love to explore. Meeting new creatures I ve never seen before. Won t you come with me and meet all my friends, Save our dear oceans and find a few hidden gems? Three-quarters of our earth is covered by the sea. It s home to hundreds of thousands of species, just like me! Although scientists have already discovered quite a lot. There s more waiting in the shadows to be given their spot! We all work together side by side, Without one another, we just wouldn t survive. The sea is an ecosystem like a chain made of links. If you take one out, all ocean life shrinks. Yes, we re all different and each have our own crew. We re just one big ocean family with feelings, too. Getting to know us all is just the start We d love some respect and a piece of your heart.

KNOB-HORNED CORAL RACCOON BUTTERFLYFISH I m a Knob-horned Coral, so pretty and bright. But if I turn white, something s not quite right. At first glance, I might look like a rock, I m actually thousands of polyps so don t get a shock. Now that you ve met me and know that you know, I take a very, very long time to grow! Only about only 2cm a year. So do take care whenever you re near. polyps are tiny animals and a coral is made of thousands of them! I m a butterflyfish! Here s how you tell - A stripe through my eyes confuses predators well. I m a traveller that likes to hunt and roam. Settling down with one partner in my deep-sea home. There are over 100 types, we've got at least 24. Maybe someday we might find a few more. We had fish in our oceans before dinosaurs on land. To keep the population strong, we must take a stand. i m sad to tell you that the world s fish stocks will collapse in 30 years if we don t stop overfishing.

ACTIVITY TIME! CONVICT SURGEONFISH Help Percy the Parrotfish find his way through the maze to get to the cleaning station of the Cleaner Wrasse. Every Surgeonfish has a razor-like spine. Sharp as any doctor s scalpel, you ll find. We ve all got one, right on the tail. And my stripes make me look like I ve been in jail! I m a Convict Surgeonfish, you see And my favourite snacks are seaweeds and algae. Shallow reefs and rockpools - we call them home. Please don t move us to yours, we ve got our own Parrotfish like Percy spend 90% of their day eating algae off of coral with their beak-like teeth. It might sound gross but to them, it s really delicious! They also poop up to 100kgs of sand every year, keeping our beaches nice and sandy! Please don t catch my friends with your fishing net, it really makes them so upset. Scientists have found it s the same feeling as when a human drowns!

SEA CUCUMBER SEA HARE I m a Sea Cucumber in the salad of the deep. My cousins are the starfish and urchins (that you re still going to meet). We can be red, black, blue, green or even brown in colour. To us, it doesn t matter as long as we have each other! We ve got tentacles beneath us, to help us eat and strut. Please don t think we re weird just cause we breathe out of our butt Our diet is the dead stuff at the bottom of the sea. By eating it, we keep our oceans clean for you and me. I m a Sea Hare with rhinophores on my head. They might look like ears but help me smell instead. Just like an octopus, I produce sticky ink. It looks a bit like blood, it s pretty cool, don t you think? I lay up to million eggs in one breeding season, I keep my population strong, and for good reason! Although my name implies I might be a swimming bunny, I m a kind of sea slug, now isn t that quite funny? Most Sea Cucumbers are nocturnal, so they re active at night. They re so lucky, their parents don t give them a curfew! our oceans are such a magical place. Did you know that we ve already lost over 50% of our marine life in only 40 years? Let s not lose any more.

Nudibranch means naked gills and I use mine to breathe. Every Dotty Dorid has them, and they all look just like me. You ll find me all along the reefs across the deep sea floor. Don t let my cute spots fool you though, I am a carnivore. I m a sea slug with one foot and it s the only way I move. It s actually a great big muscle and of course, I save on shoes. That was just a joke you see, we don't care all that much for fashion. I m one of 3000 species and bright colours are our passion! Some Nudibranch species are poisonous, whilst others just pretend to be. Bright colours are a sign of poison but some Flatworms copy this to protect themselves.

FLORAL MORAY EEL I have two rows of teeth and people think I mean them harm,i m actually quite a shy creature that s yet to find my charm. I open and close my mouth like that so I can breathe - you see. Eels are misunderstood, so won t you learn more about me? Yes, I resemble a snake but my family are fish. Quiet caves are my home and I ambush my prey with a swish! I secrete a protective mucus that covers me from top to tail. Sometimes it s poisonous so predators know, they ll try their luck and fail. Some morays will hunt and cooperate with other fish. They even have special signals to talk to each other. THE DANGER ZONE BLUE BOTTLES, ANEMONES & URCHINS We re blue bottles and it s we because we re actually made of many. Our stings are pretty painful so you definitely don t want any! They call me a Scorpionfish because I have a VERY poisonous sting. I'm camouflaged in coral reefs so my prey don't see a thing! My name means hedgehog and I am very sensitive to light. Yes, I m covered in loads of spines but I really don t want to fight. THE DANGER ZONE THE DANGER ZONE DANGER ZONE THE DANGER ZONE THE DANGER Although these creatures are dangerous you shouldn t be afraid of them. Just be cautious when they re near and never get close enough to touch them.

JOIN THE DOTS CUSHION STARFISH I m actually not a fish, it s time to let the truth be told I am an Echinoderm and my colours are often bold. Sea urchins are my cousins and my arms hold all my eyes. There s no blood within my body, which is quite a strange surprise I move with all my tube-like feet to get from rock to rock. We eat with our stomachs inside out, so there s another shock! There s over 2000 species of stars, scattered across all of the sea. If I lose an arm, I grow another back so don t worry about me. Can you join the dots and complete this picture of a Firefish? Did you know that they swallow their prey in a single bite? They also carry venom in their spines!

OCTOPUS A FAMILY OF CREATURES What has eight tentacles and lets out a massive cloud of ink? It s me, the octopus - and I m way cooler than you think! My ink is actually just a way to keep me out of sight. It also puts an end to a predator s smell so that I escape alright. I have three hearts in total and my blood is coloured blue. I m an invertebrate, which means no bones for predators to chew. My nervous system is highly developed so I experience emotion. I m also one of the most intelligent creatures in the ocean! An octopus can change colour and skin texture to camouflage itself for protection, kind of like a chameleon does on land. By signing this declaration, you re promising to join the ocean army and vowing to take care of all of its creatures so that other generations can enjoy them. Once you ve made your pledge, tear this out and keep it where you can see it, like I on your fridge or bedroom wall. I m a Soldier of the Sea am making a promise today. To be a warrior of the ocean including sand and every bay. I will treat the sea and all its creatures with the utmost respect. I will never cause harm or any kind of neglect. I will tell my loved ones why our oceans matter, Educating others by example and through helpful chatter. I will keep the sea the way nature intended, join my fellow warriors so that we can protect it. Date: Sign:
