1 Information Sheet R Dent, William, Ledger, One volume. MICROFILM This collection is available at The State Historical Society of Missouri. If you would like more information, please contact us at shsresearch@umsystem.edu. This is an account ledger from a general store at Dent s Station in St. Francois County, a few miles south of what is now Bismarck, Missouri. An index to the accounts is available. Dent s Settlement was one of the earliest white settlements in St. Francois County. It took its name from Absalom, John, and Mark Dent, Virginia natives who came to southeastern Missouri ca The settlement became known as Dent s Station after construction of the St. Louis & Iron Mountain Railroad in the 1850s. It declined and ceased to exist after the town of Bismarck was laid out in The Dent Store was operated during the Civil War by Mark Dent s son, William. It was a typical country mercantile operation of the period, trading in groceries, dry goods and hardware, and receiving cash and county produce in return. The ledger contains the names of the Dents, Carters, Garretts, Matkins, Sherrills, and Tullochs, all of whom were descendants of the first settlers in the area, indicating the local nature of the trade. Most of the transactions in the ledger were recorded in There are only sporadic entries for Many outstanding accounts were settled in January The entries indicate that even in the midst of the war, customers at the Dent Store were able to purchase spelling books, sun bonnets, powder, caps, and lead in addition to the customary dry goods and groceries. r November 1988 George Winnett Dent Loaned for microfilming Ledger Index Name Page Alexander, Jacob 001 Alexander, Jacob 089 Alexander, Jacob 105 Alexander, Jacob 165 Alexander, Jacob 181 Alexander, Jacob 237 Alexander, Jacob 270 Alexander, Jacob 290 Alexander, Jacob 323 Alexander, Jacob 344 Alexander, Jacob 358 Alexander, James 002 Alexander, James 106 Alexander, James 153 Alexander, James 201 Alexander, James 276 Alexander, James 352 American Iron Mountain Co. 074
