Research Projects and Proposals

Research Report Coho salmon effects of light on retinal development operational project E/M study of retinal tissues from fish reared under natural light and under artificial (indoor) light no significant differences observed Conclusion full scale research project not warrented

Steelhead Temperature Effects of rearing temperature on sexual differentiation Cole, Blouin, Noakes, Schreck & Morrison Samples collected; histology underway; clearing & staining; X rays underway

Clearing and Staining

Salmonid Smolt Predation ODFW, OSU F & W, USGS, OHRC (Lotek) Michelle Schuiteman, Carl Schreck, David Noakes, Shaun Clements, Ryan Couture Research project under discussion

Salmon Homing and Straying Ken Lohmann, Michael Banks, Andy Dittman, Tom Quinn, David Noakes full/211/11/1719 Research Workshop OHRC February 2011

Research Projects Hatch boxes proposal reviewed by OHRC, ODFW proposal to Advisory Committee Lotek archival sonic tags (Schreck & Noakes) FPGL (Corvallis) Sterile adult steelhead behavior operational project (OHRC, ODFW review) A trap for lamprey ammocoetes operational project (OHRC, ODFW review) Triploid rainbow spawning behavior operational project (OHRC, ODFW review)

Wild Broodstock Comment during Advisory Committee meeting on June 2010 to the effect that the OHRC has not dealt with the question of wild broodstock The question HAS BEEN RESOLVED (proximate, intermediate and ultimate) 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010

Wild Broodstock (ultimate) Araki & Blouin (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010) publications AND presentations to OHRC Advisory Committee meetings: reduction in lifetime reproductive fitness in hatchery steelhead, compared to wild steelhead Blouin ongoing research at the OHRC to test mechanisms that cause such differences in lifetime reproductive success presentations to OHRC Advisory Committee meetings

Wild Broodstock (ultimate) Theriault & Banks (2010, in press) reduced fitness of hatchery coho compared to wild coho publications AND presentations to OHRC Advisory Committee meetings O Malley & Banks research discussions for study of coho mate choice

Wild Broodstock (ultimate) Alsea River steelhead genetics Banks and Noakes (2010) report to OHRC Advisory Committee; discussions with ODFW there is evidence of distinct genetic structuring of steelhead in the Alsea River (and probably in other coastal rivers) use of wild caught adults as broodstock must take this genetic structuring into account any stocking programs in the basin must take genetic structuring into account

Wild Broodstock (proximate) OHRC training workshop with steelhead anglers (2006) wild broodstock collection, holding and handling procedures (2006, 2007, 2008) presentations to angler groups, ODFW Hatchery Managers, ODFW Biologists implementation at ODFW Alsea Hatchery

Wild Broodstock (intermediate) Mary Buckman (ODFW) Bruce Morrison (Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources) statistical design for research project to study wild broodstock at a landscape scale (capture, handling, etc.) presentation and discussion at OHRC Advisory Committee meeting CONCLUSION: the project is NOT feasible and NOT realistic too many tanks, too many fish, too many treatments, no statistical power, etc., etc.

Wild Broodstock CONCLUSIONS (1) We can keep wild broodstock alive and healthy until spawning (2) Any experience in a hatchery environment reduces lifetime reproductive fitness for coho and steelhead (3) It is neither realistic nor feasible to conduct a rigorous test of capture, handling and source of wild broodstock in a landscape scale experiment (4) Taking and using wild broodstock will have genetic implications and consequences (5) The use of wild broodstock will be an informed decision by ODFW management taking into account genetic and other considerations
