1 THE TRANSMITTER y AMA CHARTER EDITION DAVENPORT RADIO CONTROL SOCIETY President's Report Hi all, We have finally had some fairly consistent flying weather recently with lots of activity at the field. The field is in great shape (Thanks Dave C.) and so far the new dust abatement is working pretty well--can't beat the price!! Please continue to use the pin board as always even if flying 2.4. There are some new faces at the field, and it really helps to make sure everyone is current with AMA, etc. Thanks. As you all know the Scale Meet is in the books. Another great event! Many thanks to Phil who has CD'd the event for the last 20 years. Great run, Phil! I hope we can keep it going for 20 more. We had 32 registered pilots with 58 planes entered. The winners were as impressive as always and listed elsewhere in this issue. We had kind of a murky start to the day with some fog and almost drizzly weather in the am. Flying started a bit later than usual due to conditions, but it gave way to probably the best flying conditions we have had in years. Some of the early flights were limited by the ceiling, then it cleared off, and I know there were several times when folks were waiting in line to fly. We had a great crowd, and I think that little flight line indented area was completely full the entire day. Hy-Vee did their thing and sold everything they brought so thank you everyone for supporting them. Every year when I talk to the Hy-Vee guy he asks us to call again next year. I think he enjoys watching. We had some media coverage but I think we can do better. We will work on that for next year. Once again, this was Phil's last time to CD the event, and I think it was a great note to end on. Thanks Phil!! We had an interesting weekend a few weeks ago at the field. Some of you, I am sure, have heard the story already, but it bears repeating. We were flying along as usual on a beautiful day with winds of about 5 to maybe 10 with a string of about 5 easy ups in the middle of the pits and a break then one more to the far North. I was standing at the pilot line with Dave C., spotting for him and suddenly, I heard a commotion behind me and to the North. I turned around just in time to see the easy up to the North going straight UP in the air, I kid you not, it was 30 ft straight up in the air!! I tried to protect Dave so he could continue to fly as it came toward us. As the first one came down, the rest of the string went up!! Mind you, there was probably 10 or 12 planes under the string of shelters and a few under/next to the one to the North. All the shelters came down in a tangled mess. Nearly miraculously, the worst damage to an airplane was a torn off aileron on my Carbon Z cub and a cracked edge of the cockpit on Dean Bryant's Spacewalker. Scotty had a bruise on his chest where a shelter leg hit him, and I think, Dean's glasses took a hit, otherwise no human injury. We untangled the shelters, and I think, 4 of them were trashed. No wind after the event. Some of the planes on the ground did not even move!! Craziest thing I ever saw, The take away I suppose, is to stake them suckers down even when you don't think you need to!!!

2 Page 2 The fun was not over yet. Some folks packed up and left, but some of us continued to fly. A while later, a storm started building to the North, but we had a nice Westerly breeze so we thought we were good, well some of us anyway. Scott and I had been flying the jet, and I was anxious to take my next turn. We fueled up the old girl and were getting ready to fire up when somebody said "looks like the rain is about 10 to 15 min out" to which Scott replied "well we only have 5 min of fuel, so lets go". I agreed that that storm would never hit us so I took off. About 2 minutes into the flight it started to rain a little then a few seconds later it started to RAIN! So me, being the expert pilot that I am, did what anyone in my position would do and yelled "SCOTTY!!!!" Scott quickly ran over, and I handed him the transmitter, and he greased that sucker in in a total downpour. How it stayed running, I will never know. So we all stood out in the rain and got completely soaked for the next 20 min or so---it was awesome. The rain passed and it cleared off, and we had the best flying conditions of the year the rest of the evening, well, except for the soaking wet clothes and chairs and everything else. I guess this just proves how crazy we are. ( oh by the way, Scott and I both had our truck windows down the whole time). Our next event at the field will be the Flying Weenie Roast on Saturday, ust 1st. As usual, the club will provide the hot dogs/buns and condiments. Please bring a dish to pass and all your friends and family. We usually try to eat about 5:30 or so. We will probably try to have some night fliers and a fire after, if it is OK with the sod farm folks. Plan on getting your night fliers tuned up for the event and hang around for the fire as it is always a good time. We will talk more about this at the meeting. Hope the weather holds out for us. Please continue to be mindful of the rules of our field and follow them. I was made aware of an incident a few weeks ago where someone was flying a quad over the pits/parking area and flying over planes and people in the pits. No matter how reliable you think the aircraft is, unexpected things can happen, and this is never safe. There is never a reason to be flying over the pits on purpose. One last housekeeping item. One of the owners mentioned to us that he has seen some partiers out on the field at night. If the last person out for the day could re-string the rope across the field and put the cones out across the driveway, it seems to keep them out. The little bastards don't seem to want to expend the energy to get out of the car and drop the rope, etc. If you are the first one there, and see the rope up, it does not mean the field is closed. If, for some reason the field is closed, everyone will be notified by other means. Please, if you are the first one there drop the rope but put cones over any mud holes so they don't get bigger/deeper. Thanks again for your cooperation. I am not trying to be a pest but we all must do our part so we don't lose our field. Remember we are there at the whim of the owners and could be removed at any time. 5 Page 5 BITS & PIECES: Again, thanks to all that made the Scale Meet a great success. It was cool to see winners from both ends of the age spectrum. In case you haven't heard, AMA is raising dues for All the details are in the latest issue of Model Aviation. However, the AMA is offering renewals for 2016 at current rates thru tember 14 th. There is also an additional discount if you add a second year so that would be good thru I know I will take advantage of this offer. As many of you know, the Club purchased new Pop-ups to replace the monster tents. The Pop-ups are now locked in a cabinet in the barn. I will share the combination with the CD's and officers. Our combat event is coming up tember It is not too early to get your planes built and ready. I believe Rodd Schick still has some Gnats kits available. Contact him if you would like one. Be sure to welcome any new faces that you see at the field. We have had several new members join recently, some new to the hobby and some with quite a bit of experience. Happy flying!
