The bulls in the offering are the result of decades of planned breeding for the traits we value fertility, fleshing ability, performance, carcass and calving ease. We do not breed for one number, but want a realistic, balanced product that can perform for you. Known genetics combined with good management make all the difference in the success of a program. For the last six years, we have DNA tested every bull in our sales through Angus Genetics Inc. We utilized the Zoetis test with the highest accuracy, the HD50K High Density test, which makes a young bull s EPD accuracies as high as if he had already sired from eight to 20 calves. This allows you to have the most confidence in your decisions and the best chance for profitability. All EPDs in this book are Genomic Enhanced Expected Progeny Differences, or GE-EPDs. We are fortunate to see the demand that Lyons Ranch-sired calves generate in the yards and on the rail. 5 Information in this Catalog Integrity of Data Provides the Base Today s technological environment demands that we provide up-to-date information covering many selection criteria. Not every piece of data is important to every buyer. Pay attention to the information you need and evaluate the animals yourself on sale day to help ensure your own success. With so much push toward producing curve-bending animals with extreme numbers, it can be tempting to focus on single trait selection when you are buying bulls. As we have for generations, we encourage you to select what works for your program without going for extremes. We all want and need well-rounded cattle with high fertility, good feet and legs, are easy fleshing and have strong udders don t forget this when you make your selections. In every case, the integrity of the data is only as good as the person who reports it. We have made every attempt to collect and report data in an honest fashion. If you have any questions about any of the numbers provided, don t hesitate to ask. All Bulls were DNA Tested In addition to the regular weights and measurements we have recorded and reported for generations under AHIR to the American Angus Association, to increase the accuracies of all bulls EPDs, for the last four years, Lyons Ranch has DNA tested every bull in our sales. This year, we used the Zoetis HD50K test, including parentage, through Angus Genetics Inc. The American Angus Association reports that adding a genetic profile can give a young bull s EPDs accuracies as high as if he had already sired and recorded progeny on eight to 20 calves. We have done this so you can make solid breeding decisions for your operation s success and allow all of us to make better genetic progress. All EPDs in this book are all Genomic Enhanced Progeny Differences, or GE-EPDs. This DNA test allows us to verify the parentage of every animal selling. 6 Information in this Catalog Production & Growth EPD s Calving Ease Direct is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight EPD expressed in pounds is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning Weight EPD expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearling Weight EPD expressed in pounds is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Carcass EPD s Carcass Weight EPD expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire s progeny compared to that of other sires. Marbling EPD MB expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire s progeny compared to the progeny of other sires. Ribeye Area EPD REA expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire s progeny compared to the progeny of other sires. Performance Data Beside each animal s pedigree are boxes that include the individual s performance data and production EPDs. Below is information about the performance data. Act. Actual weight of the animal taken on his day of birth. Adj. Adjusted to 205 days of age. Actual December WT and Actual December SC The bulls in sale are all over 18 months of age. The catalog shows the actual weights and actual scrotal circumferences on December 10, Dam NR Nursing Ratio of the individual s dam, number of calves she has raised and the average weaning weight ratio of them. Yearling Weight adjusted 365 day weight and EPD. Provided on younger cattle in this catalog. 2 Yearling Weight 2 adjusted weight at 18 months of age. Since all bulls selling are fall yearlings, if available, we have provided their adjusted 2 from the American Angus Association. All adjustments are made from weights processed through AHIR at the American Angus Association. Fat Thickness EPD Fat expressed in inches is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib of a sire s progeny compared to the progeny of other sires. Maternal EPD s Maternal Milk EPD - Milk is a predictor of a sire s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering. Calving Ease Direct EPD is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Index Values $Value index EPDs are multi-trait selection indices, expressed in dollars per head, to assist producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sires are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. There are many $Value Indices. We have included two. ean and eef. These numbers change based on the cattle market. Wean Value - expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit. includes revenue and cost adjustments, birth weight, weaning weight, maternal milk and mature cow size.
