1 Northern Suburbs Fly Fishing Club Editorial Welcome to the May edition of the Northern Flyline. With no Editor, I ve decided to take over the reins until the a new editor can be elected. Unfortunately this months edition will be dominated by previous Minutes, however I ll see if I can find some titbits from around the traps. Hopefully you ve read this far and now I would like to ask you a question, Why did you join the Club? With the upcoming AGM it s time for all Club members to really consider taking up a position on the Committee. We will really need a new Secretary and Treasurer. Patrick P is unable to continue as Secretary as a result of work commitments, however it wouldn t surprise me if he puts his hand up to be a Committee member and our illustrious Treasurer has being doing the job for so long now it s time to hand over the books. None of the Committee positions are very onerous and the rewards are great. Seeing something come to fruition that you have been involved in planning is very satisfying. Just remember that without a Committee we don t have a Club and you didn't join the best fly fishing club in Australia to just let everybody else do all the work, now did you? So in the coming months, make sure you have a chat to the President and Secretary (or any other Club members) and let them know that you would like to be part of the history of the Club especially as we move towards our 50th Anniversary. Anyway it s now time to finish this newsletter and get back out onto the water. The Secret Editor NSFFC Committee Domenic Bono, President Patrick Parisienne, Secretary Chris Dabal, Treasurer John Smith, Trip Coordinator Pat Sheridan, Webmaster Anne Hern, Social Secretary Committee Members: Darren Percy Patrick Thomson In this edition Presidents Page 2 May General Meeting Speaker 2 Easter Sunday Bunnings BBQ 3 ACF Notes 3 Delivering a Healthier Thompson River 4 Fly Fishing Art and Craft Show Syllabus 6-8 Minutes 9-11 Northern Suburbs Fly Fishing Club, PO Box 54, Yarrambat 3091, 1

2 President s page Don t sweat it, the President didn t know this was coming out and I m sure he ll be busy writing up some great words of wisdom for us next Month. In the man time, when was the last time you logged into the Club s website? I was talking to the Webmaster recently and we get over 8000 hits per month but some of you have never logged onto the site to see what is there just for members. In the coming months, the Webmaster is planning to get all the trip reports on the website. This will mean you can see what are the best flies to use, where to stay and where to fish. There s also a place where you can write up your latest trips and share your experiences with other Club members. Also the library is there as well, so have a look at what s available to take out and read up on. 3 Easter Sunday Bunnings BBQ Anne Hern Easter Sunday Bunning s BBQ came together with Happy Pat in the lead (can definitely sell ice in Iceland ) with enough helpers on the day. Many thanks for all who gave up some of their Easter Sunday. Just under $ clear on the day so worth the effort and once again the BBQ area was a lot cleaner than when we took it over at 7.30 that morning. Thanks Chris the cleaning wizard. ACF Notice Just a reminder that entries for 2017 Cock of Walk close 5:00pm Sunday 7th May and entries for Victoria and Australian Championships close at 5:00pm Sunday, 25th June Same procedure that has been in place for last few years, singular entries from each competitor, sent by to jwaters@castmasteraustralia.com.au by the closure date and time, specifying each event the competitor is wishing to cast in. Any queries, issues or concerns you may have please do not hesitate to John Waters at this address. The casting order and judging order will be circulated before the events. Cock of Walk will be held at Red Tag and both the state and national championships at Southern. Northern Suburbs Fly Fishing Club, PO Box 54, Yarrambat 3091, 3

4 DELIVERING A HEALTHIER THOMSON RIVER More water will flow through the Thomson River, with the Andrews Labor Government taking the next step in delivering an addi>onal eight gigalitres of water. The addi>onal water is vital for the health of the heritage-listed Thomson River, and surrounding local communi>es. It will also help protect and boost na>ve fish popula>ons, including the Australian grayling, Tupong and Australian Bass, and help increase and diversify plant and animal habitat. The new water is part of the Labor Government s plan to invest in and protect the Thomson River, one of Victoria s priority waterways. Timing of the water releases is based on scien>fic advice, including the most appropriate water regime to best maintain and improve the environmental values of the river reaches along the Thomson River. In line with the Victorian Water Act, the next step is to no>fy the community and key stakeholders, including an opportunity for local residents to provide feedback. The no>fica>on period will last for two weeks, finishing on 25 April The Minister will then formally consider the applica>ons and amend the bulk en>tlements. Quotes a7ributable to Minister for Water Lisa Neville The Thomson River is the lifeblood for surrounding communi6es. It s too important for us not to act. This extra water will mean a stronger and healthier River for the years to come. Healthy river flows, becer habitat and record fish numbers are all part of our plan for a strong system of waterways. 5 The Australian Fly Fishers Art and Craft Show The VFFA will this year organise and sponsor the Australian Fly Fisher s Art and CraQ Show, which hopes to asract high quality entries from around the country with a first prize of $5,000. The show is targe>ng crea>ve talents whether their skill is in sculpture, pain>ng, photography, metalwork, woodwork, needlework or in any other kind of art or craq medium - providing it represents an aspect of the sport of fly fishing. This includes fishing equipment or accessories made by individuals. The event was last held in 2008 under the VFFA umbrella and was purely an art show focused on pain>ng as well as other types of figura>ve art. It asracted over 60 entries and was won by Tasmania based ar>st Pieter Zaadstra. VFFA member Paul Squires is again helping to organise the show and explains some of the changes in this year s format. Our previous show was very successful, but we wanted to appeal to an even wider audience if possible and hence the inclusion of Australia in the name of the compe>>on this >me as we hope to asract entries from every state. Although the quality of the entries was very high last >me, we felt it was perhaps too focused on figura>ve art. The sport of fly fishing has generated excep>onal developments in craq over many centuries. We only have to think of the beauty of split cane rods, hand-made reels, fly-tying and all other kinds of fishing paraphernalia. We want this year s compe>>on to appeal to anyone with an ar>s>c or craq based talent who also shares an interest in fly fishing and a love of the landscapes in which we enjoy it including s>ll waters, rivers or the sea. VFFA President Mike Jarvis explained the associa>on s interest in organising the show. As a sport, we are fortunate to have asracted the brilliance of ar>sts and craqsmen over many years, who have produced exquisite works that capture or enable this wonderful ac>vity. We want to help foster these talents in current ar>sts and craqs people and that is why we are pu`ng forward a significant sum as the first prize. The art world can some>mes be too focused on contemporary art and we are seeking to provide a plaaorm where ar>sts and craqspeople can showcase their talents, whether they use tradi>onal skills or modern technology driven mediums. The exhibi>on will also be of great interest to collectors looking to acquire exci>ng new pieces at affordable prices. Entries need to be submised before the closing date on 31 July 2017 and selected works will be exhibited at a special exhibi>on at Steps Gallery in Melbourne on September 2017, which the VFFA is hoping will be opened by a high-profile guest. Informa>on on how to submit an entry can be found via the VFFA website Northern Suburbs Fly Fishing Club, PO Box 54, Yarrambat 3091, 5
