Neither can I! This year has gone by so fast; however, it has indeed been a great one. We have seen many successful events from the past and have tried a couple new ones such as volleyball and League vs. League softball. It has been wonderful serving you as Deputy Master Councilor this past year. But, with Conclave on the horizon, so ends my term in office. I would personally like to thank all of those who have helped me this year. Whether it was gas money, help with an event or even just a conversation here and there, it is definitely appreciated. To my Chapter and the Leagues that make up my district, I am glad to be able to say that I am a Past Master Councilor of South Bay Chapter and a two time Past Oasis President. Also, I am thankful for your continued support as Deputy Master Councilor. As you all know, my theme this year was Recess is Over, Time for Brotherhood. I am proud to say that my theme was realized. The brotherhood of our Jurisdiction is at an all time high. We frequently have brothers traveling to other Chapters to help with degrees and meetings and it can truly be said, we are more united as brothers than we were at the beginning of the year. I congratulate the members of this Jurisdiction because all of this is because of you. By the time you read this article, jurisdiction election are bound to have passed. I hope I will be able to say that I look forward to another year s service to the Jurisdiction. However, whether elected or not, I promise my service to this Order will continue. During our installation service, we point out that, though we are temporarily chief among our Brethren, to the ranks we shall return. And, though one day it will be my turn, help will always be given to those in search of it. I hope to see you, your members, and your prospects at Conclave and in the days to come and I hope to talk to all of you soon. Until then, remember to have a blast, SCJ. Always and Forever, Tyler Davies SCJ MASTER COUNCILOR SCJ DMC 09/10 My Brothers of SCJ, The term is coming to an end and Conclave is right around the corner! Be sure to get your forms in as soon as possible. I am so proud of all the members of SCJ. Together, we have accomplished so much this year! We reached positive growth, opened new Chapters, had a League vs. League Sporting event and so much more! The Brotherhood we share in Southern California makes me truly proud to call myself a DeMolay. Even though my term is up in September, I know that our Jurisdiction will continue its success in the new term! To ensure that you, the members, get the best term you can in , don't forget to have each of your Chapters send five delegates to SCJ and League Elections on August 7 th! Does your Chapter miss sporting events because the events require more members than your Chapter can offer? Look no further! On August 21 st, we have our Annual SCJ Over-the-Line tournament! It's like baseball except your team can consist of only three to five members and you don't even have to run any bases! So, come on out and enjoy the fun! Last, but not least, I would like to thank all of you for allowing me to be your Master Councilor this year. It has been a blast! Some people wonder why anyone would want to run for a Jurisdiction Office. For me, it is quite simple. I want to leave office knowing that this Jurisdiction is better than when I was installed. I love DeMolay. I love this organization so much that I wanted to make sure I had no regrets when I aged out. So for all of you members that love this organization as much as I do, take advantage of your time in DeMolay by running for positions in your Chapter, League and Jurisdiction. When all is said and done, you want no regrets. Sincerely and Fraternally, Maxwell C. Shoemaker SCJ Master Councilor Over the Line
Page 2 League Discussion August 2010 Diamond League What s up SCJ!? This is my last Preceptor article, as President, for the year. I must say, this was a very successful year in Diamond League. We opened a new Chapter, San Pedro, many of us have our League spirit shirts and we have participated in many activities all over the Jurisdiction! I want to thank my League for giving me such an unforgettable year for my term as President and I encourage all of you to continue to strengthen the bonds we have created this year and maintain the friendship we have in the Diamond League family. We have a couple of events left before Conclave. On August 8 th, we will have Diamond League s Old Skool Sports Day. It will be held at Blanco Park, in Culver City, starting at 12 noon. We will be playing school yard games such as kickball, handball and four squares. All are welcome to come. In an effort to increase interleague activity, Diamond League has joined together with Paradise League to plan a Conclave Kick-Off Party! This will take place at Covina Chapter on August 27 th. It starts at 8 p.m. and ends around 11:30 p.m. General admission is $5. All girls who arrive before 8:30 p.m. get in free and all guys who arrive before 8:30 p.m. only have to pay $3. As Brother Hannum said It s gunna be crackin! Although this is my last preceptor article as President, that does not mean that it has to be my last article ever. It is up to you on election day. I am running for SCJ DMC for the year. When picking new leaders, so go with the fro and vote Pijeaux! Stay updated with our League by visiting our website: And, always remember, some relationships come to an end but Diamonds are Forever! Walter Pijeaux Diamond League President Paradise League Hey SCJ!! Well, we are winding down to the end of the DeMolay year and I just wanted to say thank you to everybody for such a great year. Just because it's close to the end of the year doesn't mean that the brotherhood needs to come to a close; in fact, it's the exact opposite. We just initiated a few more members at our League meeting and an initiatory degree at Covina. I see many other Leagues and Chapters putting on more initiations, as well. For one of the last events of the year, Paradise and Diamond League have decided to come together and put on a cracking, yes cracking, Conclave Kick-Off Party. There's going to be dancing, games and much more. The Party will take place on Friday, August 27 th, at the Covina Lodge. Doors will open at 8:00 p.m. The regular price will be $5, but we are having an early bird special - if you show up before 8:30 p.m., ladies get in free and guys are only $3. Make sure to mark it on your calendars because that is one event you don't want to miss! Once again, thanks to everyone who has made this year successful for not only me, but Paradise League and SCJ. And remember, things are always better in Paradise Chris Hannum Paradise League President
The Preceptor Page 3 Highland League Hello SCJ, This past year has definitely been a good one for Highland League. The start of the DeMolay year was a little rocky due to the break up of the Districts into the Leagues. Our cabinet of officers and advisors quickly found synergy and, after our first fundraiser, we were looking forward to a successful term. Although some of our events were a little unorthodox, such as a car wash in the pouring rain, we had good turn outs and everyone had fun. We also had many great events shared with the very close Sonora League; such as Iron Chef, SH Ball, Murder Mystery Dinner and the Brotherhood Camp. Now, our League has a full year under its belt and the candidates for next year s officers are all well qualified and our League will be in good hands. Highland League raised over $1,000 for Relay for Life and actively participated in several relays across the League. I can happily report that our League has seen growth since last Conclave, especially in Keith Lee Seals Chapter. Travel between our Chapters has also improved throughout these last months. I would like to personally thank the officers of Sonora League who worked with us on the larger events. Our League s officers worked very hard this past term and deserve many thanks; especially the SH and VP who, while not able to complete the term, still proved extremely helpful and invaluable. Finally I want to thank the League Dad and Administrator, without whom I would have been lost and the League along with me. Garrett Lacroix, Highland League President Sonora League Fellow SCJ members and friends! It has been a great year and one of transition for all of us here in Southern California. First and foremost, I want to acknowledge all of the candidates running for office and give them my best wishes. It takes a lot of gumption to run for office, and I, for one, appreciate all the hard work of officers in both Leagues and the Jurisdiction. As the term is coming to a close, I want to let everyone know that August 21st is Sonora League s and Highland League s joint Honor s Night at Upland Lodge. We will be having two people receive Chevalier and we will be giving out various other honors. The night starts at 7:00 p.m. and I hope you guys can make it out! I also want to take this time to congratulate three new initiates in Sonora League. I hope all three of you get a lot of out of De- Molay! Let s all have a great end of the term and I hope to see everyone at Conclave! Thanks, Justin Moore Sonora League President
Page 4 Titan League RAWWRRRRR SCJ DEMOLAY!!! August 2010 SOO WHO IS EXCITED FOR CONCLAVE?!?!?!?!? BECAUSE I KNOW I AM. Sorry, just had to get that out of the way guys - haha. Moving on to what is going on in Titan! First, I want to congratulate all of the recipients who received awards at Titan & Paradise's Honor's nights; they were ALL well deserved! Second, I hope everyone had a great time at the SCJ Sweetheart s Ball and at Titan s PAINTBALLING at Jungle Island Park. The last scheduled event is the Titan Car Rally on the 28th of August. Details for that event will be announced soon. That is all that is going on in Titan for right now. Don't forget, my fellow brothers, we make DeMolay into what we want to make it. NO ONE ELSE DOES but us, each and every one of you DO make a difference. I know that it may not seem like you can, because I was in your position once, but YOU CAN! NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE, BUT EVERYTHING IS ATTAINABLE!! YOU GUYS HAVE TO BELIEVE!! BELIEVE IN YOURSELVES, BELIEVE IN YOUR FRIENDS, BELIEVE IN THE ORDER OF DEMOLAY! 6 Page 6 August 2010 SCJ Congress Secretary Herro SCJ, This is the last article of the year and so I write this with a heavy heart knowing that this year is coming to an end. We have a few more events coming up. Perhaps the most important is SCJ elections on August 7th. This will be when you decide who will lead you for the following term. I ask that you listen to what the candidates have to say, and that you ask questions that you want to ask at caucuses because that is the last time to do so before you elect your brethren. Then we have some fun with our final athletic activity (sign). That is Over the Line and it is on the 21st of August. This is always a DeMolay favorite, when you get to just chill and hit pop fly s all over the field. This is the final stretch of the year but it is no reason for us to get lazy. Summer is the best time of the year to throw a prospect party which is a great way to bring more members in. Perhaps a prospect beach party would be a great way to end the summer season (hint hint). We are coming close to September which is when we have CONCLAVE. I won t go into to much detail about CONCLAVE because everyone knows what a blast this event is. But I do encourage you to get your forms in before the final deadline so that you may all participate in this wonderful experience. Finally my brothers I want to thank you for all the great memory s and experience I got from this year, I ask that you continue to do what you have been doing all year because it is moving DeMolay into a great future. Kenneth Hawkins Congress Secretary Hellooo SCJ! SCJ Sweetheart First of all, I want to thank everyone who made it out to my Sweetheart s Ball. I had a lovely time and hope all of you did as well. Second, I want to remind all of you that, even though the end of the year is almost here, you need to keep traveling and supporting one another. It's going to be pretty busy until Conclave with lots of fun activities left to go to! Third, I want to thank all of you for electing me as Sweetheart for this term. I have had the most amazing year and will never forget it! You are all such amazing young men and have made me proud with all of the hard work and dedication that you have put into this year. Also, thank you to all of the Chapter and League girls for being so wonderful and supporting all the young men of DeMolay! I look forward to seeing all of you as I travel around getting ready for the end of the year and Conclave. Remember to sell those ad's so that you can go to Conclave for free! And, remember to buy raffle tickets from your League Sweethearts, Rachel and me. All money goes towards the Sweetheart program. Have a great and fun end of the term! Sweetheart Love, Elizabeth Marroquin Southern California Jurisdiction Sweetheart SCJ PRINCESS Hello SCJ, It s a little sad to think that this year is down to its final count, but everything must come to an end. The year has been so much fun and we still have plenty more fun left - like CONCLAVE! I m so excited and can t wait to see all of you there. It has been a pleasure to serve as your Princess this year and I hope that I have served you well. Get ready to broadcast brotherhood at Conclave. See you there! Rachel Reese SCJ Princess
The Preceptor From The Jurisdiction Dad Page 7 I just got back from the Sweetheart s Ball; I would have to say it was a great success! I would like to thank Justin Moore for his work as chairman of this event and for making sure that we had plenty of help setting up and, more importantly, cleaning up. I would also like to thank the Jurisdiction Officers for all of their work at the dance. Between the officers, Justin s crew and some of the presidents, we were able to meet our goal of having the place cleaned up around midnight. Everyone should give a special thank you to Mom & Dad Harlan and Mom & Dad Davies for all of their work on the wonderful decorations and excellent food. With only one month left in the term, I would like to take a moment to look back on this term. I would like to thank the Jurisdiction Officers for all of their hard work. In their travels, they have been excellent representatives of the Jurisdiction. I don t know about you but, but I m proud of the example they have set. We have seen many changes this year and have added new people who are eager to help DeMolay in Southern California grow and prosper. Did you know that we have added about 100 new advisors in the last 18 months and have many new Chapters in various stages of development? San Pedro and Newport Beach are just two of the newest Chapters that are up and running, initiating new members and holding activities. Every end brings a new beginning and, as one term ends, another begins. We will soon be electing our leaders for the ensuing term. Once we know who will be taking on the rolls of leadership in our Leagues and Jurisdiction, I would ask that everyone give their full support to these new officers, regardless of whom you supported during the campaign. I hope to see everyone at Conclave. I think the Conclave committee has put together an outstanding program. Fraternally, Dad Peterson
Page 8 August 2010 FROM THE E.O. Greetings to my DeMolay Family, I m starting off by thanking all of you for your love and support that has been shown to Mom Key and I during these last several months. I m certain that with Gods help and our positive attitude everything will work out great. Congratulations to the young men and advisors who have or will be honored at the Leagues Honor Nights, LOH Investiture and ISC Collaring during the next couple of months. With August just around the corner, it brings up some very important SCJ activities. On Saturday Aug. 7 th, will be having our elections of Jurisdiction and League Officers, with a GREAT Taco Bar lunch to follow. So it s imperative that we as adults encourage every DeMolay in our chapters to come out and participate in electing their Leaders. The next major event will be held over the weekend of Aug. 13 th thru the 15 th at the Covina Masonic Homes. Yes, that s right! The Grand Lodge of California along with the Masonic Homes Board has made it possible for SCJ to hold our 1 st annual SCJ DeMolay Elected Officers Training Retreat on the campus of the beautiful Covina Masonic Homes. Our youth and adults will be staying in the vacant youth homes. We have a full weekend of Leadership Training lined up, not only for our youth but also for many adults. We have several guest speakers coming in on Saturday to address our leadership. I m grateful to them for sharing their time and expertise with us. We ll also have the first ever actual training for our Sweethearts Directors at all levels. Since we ll have all of our jurisdictional and league elected officers present, they will start working as a team to put an exciting DeMolay year together. There will also be time for Swimming and Basketball which we re calling Surf & Turf social time. Followed by a very special Inter-Generational Southwestern Bar-B-Q with the residents of the Covina homes, both the residents and our youth are looking forward to meeting and spending time with each other. This is what I call a true Masonic Family activity at its best! Our annual Conclave Broadcasting Brotherhood is just around the corner and our jurisdiction officers under the leadership of Dad Lyle, Dad Peterson, Scott Stevens and with the help of our conclave staff have worked very hard to ensure that everyone attending this year will have a great time. In closing, I want to give credit to those who made it possible for SCJ to be honored and recognized by the Grand Master of DeMolay and the International Supreme Council at their Annual Session last month. We were honored as the Most Improved Jurisdiction, Highest Number of New or Reinstated Chapters, Obtaining Positive Growth in membership and having a Great Newsletter that s increasing Communications within our Jurisdiction and DeMolay International. I want to congratulate our Jurisdiction Officers, 3 Asst. E.O. s, League Administrators, Committee Chairmen s, Directors and rest of our Staff. Because of you SCJ has been able to accomplish what others only talked about; we got it done by Walking the Talk together as a TEAM! Thank You all for your efforts. I hope to see all of you at Conclave! Fraternally, Just Dad Key
