1 Art History Syllabus Instructor Jake Stapleton Phone ext Location Room 316 Office Hours 3 rd Hour After school starting in October from 3:30-4:30 everyday. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed for the highly motivated visual art student that has expressed an interest in completing the AP Art History exam. The course covers art from the Paleolithic period through postmodernism and is designed to provide students with the same material covered in an introductory college course in art history. Students learn to understand works of art through both a contextual and a visual analysis of the major forms of artistic expression from the past and present as well as from a wide variety of cultures. The yearlong course is designed to be a chronological examination of art through units of study that are adapted from chapters in the textbook: Kleiner, Fred S. Gardner s Art Through The Ages: A Global History. 13th ed. Boston. MA: Thomson Wadsworth, COURSE OBJECTIVES: Think critically about art and how it relates to history Understand works of art within the historical context as they relate to issues such as politics, religion, patronage, gender, function and ethnicity. Examine the relationship of context, function and style of art within any given culture. Demonstrate a mastery of critical analysis of the three major forms of art: architecture, painting, and sculpture in the various cultures studied through a written format. Identify and convey the interrelationships of the elements and principles of art in visual images. Describe and identify the various techniques, media, and processes of the three major art forms (architecture, painting, and sculpture). Syllabus This syllabus is organized to include course content material from the prehistoric world to the present in both Western and non-western cultures. This yearlong course is designed to be a chronological examination of art through units of study that are adapted from chapters in the textbook: Kleiner, Fred S. Gardner s Art Through The Ages: A Global History. 13th ed. Boston. MA: Thomson Wadsworth, Weekly time frames indicate specific areas to be covered during the course of study. Full Year, Page 1
2 Grading: Grading for AP will be on a point system. Points are totaled to determine the grade for each grading period. The scale is listed below. It is advised that students NOT THROW ANYTHING AWAY. Inadequate and poor planning on the student s part does not constitute an emergency on the teacher s part. In short, if you see you are behind and NEED an A, plan better and study harder % = A 89-80% = B % = C 69-60% = D 59% Below = F Late Work: I will accept late work once. I will give you feedback on late work, but the highest grade you will receive will be a C. Handing in work late deprives you of critical feedback from the class. Plagiarism Plagiarism can involve not only written work but also artwork. In short, your work is your property and visa versa. Plagiarism is a form of cheating. Any time a student uses someone else's work and does not give that person credit, it is plagiarism. Anyone who plagiarizes will receive an F on the assignment Week 1 Introduction: What Is Art History?
