2 How to Simulate Rib Stitching - The Lazy Man s Way by Charlie Campbell OK so I bought an ARF, how much work could that be to assemble it? Answer: not too much unless you don t like the color scheme and want to detail it. So began my journey of the never ever ending detailing of a scale model. Much like a model railroad, you never really quit working on it, you just keep adding on and on and on.. So when I finished recovering my Hangar 9 Tiger Moth in fabric, I heard it calling me saying Why quit now I NEED my ribs stitched Knowing I m not getting any younger and still have other planes to build, I set out to find any easy way to not make this a precision scale model but still give it a good stand off scale appearance. Therefore I will present here a set of pictures showing the process I used to give this plane a look that on first glance appears to be some tedious work, but as you will see this process takes some of the time out of this very laborious job. One comment: My model was not built with the scale half ribs on the leading edge of the wing. This process allowed me to fake the location of those ribs! First go check out this website: Buy the stitching tape in the scale of your model. It comes in 1/6 to 1/2 Scale and custom sizes. Next I cut strips of rib stitching tape about 3/16 wide. (this width varies my plane was quarter scale) Then I cut some strips of Permagloss Coverite about 1/2 wide (these will simulate the pinking tape) Note: my pinking tape was not cut with pinking shears I tried but it did not work at all. Now I have found a website that does do that service for you but it is out of SolarTex fabric. If I did this over I would likely give these guys a try. I did not check to see if they would do Coverite s fabric. Mark the location you will apply the tape even if it s not on a rib. (see my comment above) Apply the stitching tape by simply pealing and sticking the tape to your ribs. Now iron on the pinking tape you cut directly over the stitching tape. This is how the real thing is done
