1 THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF IKS ISSUE 143 JANUARY 2008 General Sunday Meeting with potluck 2-5 pm at the home of 8554 Calle Feliz Rancho Cucamonga (909)

2 THE OVAL POND... elcome to 2008! W Our Thanksgiving feast at the Hunters was attended by 72 IKS members. I would like to give a big Thank you! to Phil and Rachel for hosting the last IKS meeting of 2007; to Tee Wright, Earlene Hearn and Lily Rhodes for their help in the kitchen; and to everyone for coming early and helping set up for the dinner. Our guest speaker was Spike Cover, whose presentation covered ways to handle various pond and koi emergencies. It was very informative and educational, plus Spike had the IKS members participating in the discussion by sharing their own experiences and solutions. The new IKS officers and directors for 2008 are Gene Maingot as President, Mark Krakower as Vice-President, and Zuma Ross as Secretary. Dennis Lynaugh and Ed Kushner will be new on the Board of Directors. Congratulations to all of the new additions to the IKS Board for On June 1, 2008, the IKS will have its annual pond tour in the Norco Corona area, and we re planning to have five to seven ponds for this event. If any IKS members would like to have their pond on this tour or would like to be on one of the committees, please contact Pond Tour Chairman Mark Krakower at (951) for more info and details. Well, this will be my last Oval Pond report as your President. The last three years have been the best time of my life! Being the IKS President, the main part has been getting to meet all of the members and hopefully helping everyone with answers to their questions. I ve watched the club grow and achieve the objectives of helping members get the right information and furthering the koi hobby so they would be able to watch their ponds and koi grow into healthy and beautiful additions to their lives. I loved being a part of the groups that attended the last two AKCA Seminars, getting to see a lot of beautiful ponds and meet a lot of truly wonderful koi hobbyists from the across the United States. And I loved being a part of the last two pond tours and the first IKS auction, which, by the way, was one of highest grossing events in the forty-year history of the IKS. To show my appreciation to the IKS board, and to thank them for all their hard work over the last three years, I m throwing a dinner party in their honor and I think everyone will have a great time. I only wish I could afford to include every single one of the members of the club! So, thank you again for allowing me to be your president. It has truly been my honor to be a part of the most wonderful group of people that I have ever met in my life! 3 JANUARY GENERAL MEET To start this New Year, we will be having our first 2008 IKS General Meeting in Rancho Cucamonga with Ed and Kathy Rugh. When the Rughs met and married 16 years ago, they both were heavy into crafts: she did tole painting and he made beautiful inlaid wood projects. They even temporarily went into their own business. Now Kathy is interested in bears, bird cages, her grandchild, working with stained glass designs, relaxing and reading. She works full time in Document Control at Chevron and is more kicked-back during her down time. I can guarantee Ed will not be moving on to perpetual retirement soon because he is constantly busy with projects and has incredible talents to complete them. Ed teaches woodshop at Upland High School. He loves landscaping and has taught horticulture classes so well that his students have won many competitions. He says all the students displays included some sort of water feature. Ed and Kathy s beautiful home, yard and pond show a lot of pride. Since moving here seven years ago from La Verne, Ed has taken on a project with the house every year. The back and front yards were simply grass when they moved in; Ed designed the front area, laid it out jumping through hoops with the City and put in the circular driveway. One summer they remodeled the kitchen and added a huge family room. Kathy says the family room is where Ed loves to unwind or relax; she enjoys sitting with her feet up in the connecting room to watch television. During the summer Ed has time off so he always has a major project to do. One year he designed and built the gazebo, then he made 48 trips in his truck to pick up rocks at a local construction site. All the rocks around his pond were hand picked and placed by him. Last summer Ed was able to put everything together and his ideal pond came true. He designed and constructed the pond with a little technical help from the experts. The pond is about 10,000 gallons and has a bridge leading to the gazebo. The pond required a 50 ft x 20 ft liner which weighed 500 pounds. It took seven helpers to manhandle it into place. The pond has two bottom drains and a skimmer; two Wave pumps, a ¼ hp and a ½ hp, move water from them to a filter, through a UV unit, and then back to the pond by way of three waterfalls. Jim Thompson, from Waterscape Designs, Inc., stood in the background and guided Ed through the plumbing. Jim was a great counsel, for which Ed is thankful. Ed admitted their local water is naturally ph high, but his fish haven t had any problems so he just let s Mother Nature do her thing. His pond is only inches deep, and he doesn t do water changes. But his water is sparkling clear, and the koi seem healthy. He tries to listen and digest most advice, but feels he is breaking all the rules. Besides, he commented, the fish didn t read the book. At this meeting we will be installing the newly elected Officers and Board Members. Check page two to Ed & Kathy Rugh - Rancho Cucamonga see who is coming or going, but be sure to give the previous Board of Directors a hand shake if you feel they ve served the IKS well. Also be sure to welcome the newly elected Board Members. The Rugh s home has plenty of space for us to go inside if the weather is cold or rainy, so it won t be an issue this year. A contribution to the potluck is always appreciated, and if you bring a raffle prize, let Peggy know at the registration table so she can give you an extra raffle ticket. Also, be sure to bring your chairs. I am so glad I got to see this beautiful back yard because it truly surpasses description. I ll miss seeing all of you at the meeting, as I will be in Texas welcoming our tenth grandchild. Just remember, Joy is not in things, it is in us! --Debby Leverett, IKS Newsletter Editor PROGRAM: Tom Ross, our club s Koi Health Advisor, will be talking about what to do at the end of winter and the springtime care of koi. He ll have lot s of good hints and suggestions you won t want to miss. Exit off Fwy 210 at CARNELIAN STREET and head South to Baseline Road. 5 PAST-MONTH (NOVEMBER) MEETING Happenings at this Meeting 2007 IKS GENERAL MEETING ~ NOVEMBER 18, 2007 ~ TEMECULA, CA Once again Phil and Rachel Hunter graciously hosted our annual Thanksgiving dinner what a feast was had by all 72 members who attended! We could not have asked for better surroundings, greater weather, or more wonderful members. Kelly, our President, welcomed new members, Dan and Betty Johnson, and our featured guest speaker, Spike Cover, and his wife, Ginger. Phil Hunter talked a little about his pond, which is a 16,000-gallon rebar-reinforced gunite pond, built before the house was. It is six feet deep and heated. The filtration has three separate systems, each consisting of a Patio Ponds 3-chamber Cyclone 7500 Vortex System, with a Lim micro-screen strainer in the middle vortex, plus a bubble-bead filter. Phil has 22 Koi; he s had his oldest since 1986, and several are years old. A question and answer period followed. Renewal forms for membership were at the signin table and dues could be paid today; otherwise, dues should be paid by January 1, Today we voted for officers and directors, one ballot per family. The results were as follows: Gene Maingot, President; Mark Krakower, VP; Zuma Ross, Secretary; Nick Milfeld, Treasurer; and Debby Leverett, Newsletter Editor. The new directors are Kelly Houston, Tom Ross, Tom Wright, Mary Leever, Jack Marrin, Ed Kushner, and Dennis Lynaugh. Four amendments to the Bylaws, which had been proposed by the Board, were brought before the membership for approval and all passed. As Gene Maingot, our new president, was unable to attend, Kelly Houston accepted for him, saying what a great asset Gene has been to our club and to the board. As VP, he was commended for the success of the first IKS Koi Auction. Mark Krakower, Pond Tour chairman, informed us that Corona Norco will be the area for our June 1, 2008 Pond Tour. The next committee meeting will be on Thursday January 24, at 7:00pm at Mark s home. His phone number is Spike Cover s topic was Fish and Pond Emergencies. This program was different in respect to what Spike normally does: members brought pond-related problems and questions to the group s attention and they were answered by Spike. Anyone else who may have had similar problems also shared what they had done to correct them. Spike emphasized the need to THINK before problems happen. Fish Problems discussed, and some of the possible causes, included: Fish piping (gasping at the water surface): 1) Low oxygen. 2) Bad gills from bacteria, fungus, chemical burns, parasites. 3) Low hemoglobin-something causing met hemoglobin. 4) Hose left on in the pond, therefore too much chlorine. Fish lying on the bottom, clamped or spiraling through water: 1) Bad water, ph shock, temperature shock. 2) Toxic water, caused by chlorine, chloramines, insecticides, or heavy metals, especially if all fish are affected. (If only a few are affected, it s personal. ) Some fish swimming erratically: 1) CNS (central nervous system) damage, toxins (OD of meds, chlorine, chloramines, etc.) 2) Parasites, KHV, other infection. Fish out of the water (jumpers): 1) Uncovered quarantine tank. 2) Spawning activity. 3) Electric currents. 4) Anything else that might make a fish want to leave the water. Bent fish: 1) Electric shock. Be careful; the source may still be active. 2) Dylex overdose. Dead fish (some, but not all): 1) Toxins. 2) Infections. 3) Low oxygen. Pond Problems discussed, and some of the possible causes or consequences, included: Foam all over the surface of the pond: 1) Heavy foam==some type of soap or detergent, Benzalkonium chloride, other surfactant 2) Lighter foam==docs, small amount of soap or detergent. ph crash: 1) Low alkalinity. 2) Something added to acidify the pond. Water loss: 1) Leak in plumbing or other equipment. 2) Human error, e.g., valve not closed, sump pump left running Refill hose left running: 1) Chloramines make met hemoglobin and kill fish. 2) Chlorine burns gills and kills fish. 3) Ammonia burns gills and kills fish. Three books that Spike recommends are Koi Health and Disease by Eric Johnson (we have copies in our library), Advanced Koi Care by Nicholas Saint Erne, and Advanced Koi Diagnosis and Treatments by Duncan Griffiths. Additionally, Tom Ross, our Koi Health advisor, will be happy to help anyone who has a problem with a pond or koi. Mary Leever did the club raffle, with Phil Hunter calling the numbers. Meeting concluded. Submitted by: Dorothy Lynaugh, IKS Secretary *Editor s note: These are the last minutes that Dorothy will be submitting and I would like to give her a sincere THANK-YOU for being so reliable, quick to report, and very diligent as the IKS Secretary of Great Job Dorothy!!!! FOR EXTRA HELP, QUESTIONS, OR INFORMATION, BE SURE TO REFER TO THE HELP LINE ON PAGE TWO Los Angeles Times - CA,USA Steven Spielberg livid over his koi fish being eaten by a raccoon Hollywood filmmaker Steven Spielberg reportedly went berserk when he came to know that a raccoon had eaten up three koi fish from his pond due to the negligence of his assistant. A source has revealed that the three beautiful fish were worth 14,000 dollars each. "(Spielberg) had these three beautiful koi, worth about 14,000 dollars each. He put them in the pond on the lot, which is surrounded by a special gate so nothing can get to the fish. But an assistant went in to feed them, left the gate open and a raccoon ate the fish. Steven was furious - even worse, it was rumored that the Emperor of Japan gave them to him," the New York Post quoted the source as saying. A representative for Spielberg has confirmed that some of the fish from the DreamWorks lot have been eaten. However, the representative insisted that they were not the ones that came from the emperor. The Edmonton Journal Jan 2, 2008 Steven Spielberg's koi fish get eaten On the lot at Dreamworks studio, Steven Spielberg has a pond for koi fish, a hobby of his (though doubtless essential to film production in some fashion when tax time rolls around). There he kept many fish including three particular ones said to be worth $14,000 each. 10 JANUARY 2008 / ISSUE 143
