1 Physical Education & Sport Statement Charlestown Primary School aims to develop every child to be confident and competent individuals that are determined to achieve their Personal Best (PB), through enjoyment and engagement in exercise. Children receive high level teaching to become physically literate, i.e. developing the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding that provides children with the movement foundation for an adherence to lifelong participation in physical activity, gaining the associated health benefits. Our inclusive curriculum is therefore designed to achieve these goals, utilising an outstanding and progressive programme of study (Real PE) throughout the school from year R to year 6, whilst maintaining the coaching of our superb traditional sport lessons. In addition to acquiring agility, balance and coordination, our holistic view is that it is vital for pupils to also develop social, health and cognitive skills. Outside of our curriculum sport, we have a huge range of extra-curricular clubs, promoting participation for all, as well as excellence in competition across an extremely wide range of team and individual sports. 6 Sports Reports ( ). This has been an exceptional sporting year for Charlestown Primary School. Remember - we are still a small school and are challenging to be the best of any Primary School in Cornwall! Tag Rugby After reaching the National Finals last year with many of the current squad, expectations were high. Recruiting some superb female players, this was clearly the most talented team we had ever assembled. Winning both the St Austell and East Cornwall tournaments, impressively without losing a game and scoring at will, our confidence was high. We then played some simply stunningly skilful team rugby at the South West Finals, winning the first three games in style. Unfortunately, a major referee decision (picked up by the lines man but ignored by the referee) cost us a try before half time when in fact we should have scored to take the lead. Following a disallowed try the team then crumbled, however, they should be proud of being the most exciting SW tag rugby team! It was a great shame that the School Games finals was cancelled due to predicted bad weather although it turned out to be sunny. The rearranged date and change to beach tag rugby was also cancelled! It is, however, clear that we were the best in Cornwall. Athletics This was easily our most successful athletics year, and it could have been even better. We won the St Austell and district indoor festival and in the School Games county finals, in Truro School, we finished 7 th despite injuries to key athletes. We also entered the St Austell & District quad kids meeting (5 th ) Georgia Sanderson finishing 3 rd. For the first time ever, KS1 also competed in their version and finished an impressive 3 rd. It was unlucky that the SW rugby championships clashed with the St Austell schools athletics meeting once again as we were expecting to push for 1 st place. The year ended with us also entering the county championships, but our amazing athletes from year 5 (where we expected many medals) were on their residential. However, the year 6 team did superb. Ben French got a bronze (800m) and silver (STJ), Millie Juleff won a silver (75m) and Georgia Sanderson became county champion (rounders ball throw). Our year 6 girls also finished with a superb silver medal in 4 x 100m relay. About 60 athletes competed for the school this year.

7 High Five Netball Our high five season has been filled with many highs and actually lasted all year due to our continued success. In the small schools league we convincingly beat 6 schools but lost against two teams that fielded boys. When we played in the mid-cornwall tournament we recruited three boys to boost our team (although Georgia Sanderson was again injured in training and so failed to make the team even stronger). Playing exceptionally well together, they qualified for the final, which was not played, but got the team into the School Games finals. At the county finals it was strange that we had to play indoors (at Truro Leisure Centre) with short games, when the weather was fine to play outdoors as originally planned at Richard Lander School. We actually beat the eventual Bronze placed team, however, were pleased to finish an impressive 5 th by beating the other top Mid-Cornwall team, making us Mid-Cornwall Champions for the first time! Not only did we win friendly galas, but the team performed in the main St Austell gala where we finished 2 nd our best ever result! For the first time we also competed in the School Games gala, and qualified for the next round for the year 5 boys, year 6 boys and year 6 girls. At this second round the year 6 boys actually qualified for the School Games finals! However, being a small school that had already qualified for the tag rugby and high five netball (plus aquathlon on offer) the children decided to concentrate on these sports rather than the swimming. Due to many outside sports actually being cancelled, due to predicted bad weather, it actually would have been possible to take a team. Cricket It was another strong showing by all our cricket teams this season. Playing in the St Austell & District Kwik Cricket festivals our year 6 girls became champions! The year 6 boys also played brilliantly, but strangely were beaten by a mixed team from out of our area (St Agnes). Unlucky, but worse luck was to follow. Following this success, the year 4 boys narrowly lost in their festival, but the year 5 boys played amazingly to become champions. Now we had two strong teams qualified for the county finals, however, the year 6 girls were unable to attend the tournament (NB in St Austell) because of the Penrice taster day, and the year 5 boys could not attend because they were at Barton Hall. 8 Football Although we started slowly this season in the Nanphyssick tournament, the team soon grew in strength and had some impressively victories, finishing in the top half of the league. Our year 3 / 4 team was very strong, winning convincingly every week, except for a narrow lose at home to Fowey and a draw in a game we had 90% procession and over 20 shots. We finished second in the league but had beaten the winners Lostwithiel. As well as playing to win, all those that trained regularly were given the chance to play in at least one game. I was disappointed that only one girl played football this year, as it is a popular sport in PE for girls. Photo Year 5 Boys Other Inter-School Sport What a shame the School Games decided to change the aquathon event. Even though the weather was fine on the day, the organisers changed the event from a swim immediately followed by a run, to a static bike ride and then later a swim. As expected Georgia did a brilliant swim (3 rd ) but without a run was unable to medal. Also, the tag rugby was cancelled meaning Sean Blackbeard missed a chance to be county aquathlon champion. Due to the year 5s having camp during the county athletics championships, many potential medal opportunities were lost. This year we also sent two teams to the orienteering festival at Penrice School which was thoroughly enjoyed by those involved (including year 6 children that had never represented the school in sport). Basketball Even without the opportunity to run a basketball club, we formed a team of talented athletes, as well as giving opportunities to year 6 children that have never competed for the school. At the St Austell & District basketball festival, we only lost one game. We finished joint top on points, and only lost on baskets scored to two schools that won the right to go to the School Games Finals. As the organiser said, In 20 years he and I had never seen such a close result. Cross Country It has been a successful cross country season for Charlestown School. Children ran regularly in the local schools Par series of races with many qualifying to race at the county championships. Special congratulations should be given the Samuel Knobloch for his victories and the year 5 team for their success.

9 Adventurous Activities In addition to PE lessons, clubs and competitions we try to give the children other sporting and active opportunities. Although the school did not go on Hit the Surf this year, the year 5 and year 6 class did go to a PGL centre for three days of adventurous actives. The activities at Barton Hall included: abseiling, archery, zip wire, climbing and rafting. Year 6 also went ice-skating at the Eden Project. These days were thoroughly enjoyed by all. Sports Day This year s Charlestown School Sports Day was a great success. We managed to combine competing with mass participation in a range of skills for both key stages. All children were involved and seemed to enjoy the day. A large crowd also enjoyed the day. In addition to the new events last year, we had a finish ribbon to break in the infants. There was also a score board to regularly update the house points. Mr Gibson also had a reliable megaphone to relay information to the crowd. Another change was to use house colour bands in relays.
