E-Safety Day 25 th September As published in the OBH Calendar, we are holding an e-safety Day on Monday 25th September. Nathan Simmonds, Online Safety Trainer for Suffolk County Council, will be visiting us and meeting with the children. Additionally, there will be a session for all parents both in Prep & Pre-Prep in the Britten Hall at 5.00pm we urge you to attend as he is an excellent speaker on this most important of topics. Please chris.bunting@obh.co.uk if you will be attending. Parent Talks at Trinity Park, Ipswich Huddl is a new organisation set up by a Suffolk mum, Katie Lawson. Huddl provides a platform for parents to access up-to -date expert advice, so that we can help our children with the pressures of growing up. The Huddl Parent Talks are open to all parents and are on hugely relevant and current topics each with an impressive line up of expert speakers. See the website, to learn more. Sal s Shoes 78 pairs of shoes collected! Can we make it 100? A big thank you to everyone who has donated shoes to our collection for the charity, Sal s Shoes. So far we have collected 78 pairs! Everything from school shoes to slippers and wellies to trainers. Our target is 100 pairs. If anyone has any more pairs of good quality second hand shoes that you no longer need, please put them in the collecting bin outside the School Office or in the basket in the Pre Prep. All the shoes will be sent to children around the world who have never owned a pair of shoes. 300 million children in the world walk barefoot everyday. This makes them extremely vulnerable to infection by parasites and injuries to the feet and ankles that are almost always left untreated. Without shoes, many children are not permitted to attend school.

News from the Stable Yard Welcome back to the Middle School! We hope you have all enjoyed a wonderful holiday with your families. Middle School have made a brilliant start to the new academic year. Classrooms are buzzing and there is a really bubbly and exciting atmosphere. All the children have chosen their activities and Under Niners and many are opting to stay for Prep. It is very encouraging to see the children coping so well, and the early signs are very positive. A warm welcome to the new children who have joined Year 3 and 4 from different schools: Ruby Cornish, Jeremy Sibun, Albie Mann, Rory Hargreave and Bertie Mayhew. They have all made an excellent start and new friendships are already being formed. We look forward to seeing you all at our Syllabus Evening next Tuesday. This will be an opportunity to learn more about what is in store for your children. Over the coming year. Please do let us know if you would like your child to stay for supper and we can make the necessary catering arrangements. We wish you a pleasant weekend. Mrs Warren, Mr Gillott and Mr Pascalides

Boarding Matters Junior Boarding Spero House The Junior Boarding House has now formally opened as SPERO. Spero, taken from the school's motto, meaning 'I Hope'. Hope conjures up ideas of aspiration and ambition; all highly desirable qualities to inspire the youngest members of OBH's boarding community. Boarding Notices Nit Checks We nit check all boarders on the 2 nd Monday of the two-week cycle. If your child is not in that night, it is your responsibility to check your child s hair and treat as necessary. Our new house has provided great excitement over the first couple of weeks, with both the boys and girls discovering exciting new dormitories and a lovely bright, vibrant common room. The inaugural night saw 10 happy boarders snug in their comfy new beds. We welcomed Molly Warren, Albie Mann, Charlie Hearn, Wilf Abbott, Oliver Pryce and Ben Moore They were ably supported and taught the ropes by more seasoned boarders Tiara Phiri, Sophie English, Ilyssa Hills, George Roberts, Monty Harrison, William Roberts, Charlie Harrison, Ben S,tokes Gus Sprott, Joseph Bates and Jago Bucher. If anyone would like to visit Spero please me: emma.easdale@obh.co.uk Housekeeping A reminder that any child boarding 2 nights or less needs to bring in their pyjamas, wash bag, clean underwear / uniform and a set of home clothes in an overnight bag that goes backwards and forward with the boarder. We are only able to store their duvet, pillow and towel in school. Extra Nights If for any reason your child will not be boarding on a particular night, or wants to do an extra night, please contact the houseparent via . Signing In & Out Please can you remember to sign your children in and out in the School Office. This is particularly important at the weekends

Senior Boarding Welcome back to Boarding at OBH, we hope you all have had a fabulous summer holiday. The weather has been kind and the boarders have been able to play outside in Rory s place, play on the astro and use their bikes during the pleasant evenings we have experienced so far. On Saturday night the boarders were greeted by a HUGE inflatable construction which had them all slip-sliding away whilst being soaked with water. It was great to see all ages enjoying the thrills and spills as they launched themselves off the top. It was just warm enough for a delicious BBQ in between the wet n wild activity. Ice cream and hot chocolate was then consumed with delight before relaxing with games of charades in the inner hall with Madame Cubitt. Birthdays In the Boys House we celebrated Sergey Patrika s 12 th Birthday last night and we are looking forward to more celebrations next week as well. On Sunday, we attended Thorpe Morieux church for Holy Communion before returning for morning coffee. After lunch the It s a Knockout Team Challenge saw the boys and girls complete obstacle courses, zip down the wire, and navigate Rory s Place. The Wasps, The Wolves and the Vodafone Slolphins worked superbly in their teams and gained their well-deserved rewards. Thank you to all the children and staff for a wonderful weekend which was completed with tuck and a movie. Next week we look forward to EatLive! followed by Southwold Sand Statues bring your buckets and spades. Please do remember to either tracey.thornton@obh.co.uk or rob.miller@obh.co.uk if you wish to book a birthday party for your son/ daughter.

Fenella Jewers has been selected to play for Suffolk netball as part of their Satellite squad. This is the first rung on the England Netball ladder and is the result of 4 rounds of trials over the summer. She is a year young for the squad which makes this a particularly fantastic achievement. Well done, on all your extra effort to make it. Over the summer Fenella also played as part of the successful Suffolk U11 cricket squad coming second at the three day inter-counties cricket festival, where she was named Player of the Day on the first day, and the team losing only to Kent in their summer match series. Brilliant! Issy & Charlie Lock Issy attended a Theatretrain six night residential course at Royal Hospital School concluding in a performance of The Pied Piper and other pieces in front of an audience of over 200. They ran a talent contest during the week and out of 100 students attending Issy got down to the last 4. She then performred a solo in the final performance and came second as well as achieving a star pupil award. Well done, Issy! Oliver & Sophie Pryce took part in the Suffolk Libraries Summer Reading Challenge for which they had to read six books in six weeks during the summer holidays and yesterday received their certificates at a special presentation in Ipswich from the Mayor of Ipswich. Well done! Valentina David had a wonderful day as bridesmaid at her aunt s weddiong with elder brother, Casper as pageboy Charlie had a busy summer sailing and achieved his RS\Y stage 1 and 2 with Neptune Sailing and is looking forward to taking up this new hobby. Well done, Charlie!

Pre-Prep & Nursery Welcome back! We have had a lovely full week back after the summer. The children were so pleased to see each other and full of stories of their holidays. We are delighted to welcome so many new children into the Pre-Prep, with at least 2 new children in each new class. We also welcomed some exciting new class mascots: Stars of the Week Congratulations to our super Stars of the Week: Year 2 Sam English Year 1 Charlie Neil Reception Samuel Gosling Nursery Rupert Kendall Mrs. Hambling s Hedgehog Mrs. Gillott s Grasshopper Mrs. Allison s Acorn Mrs. Webster s and Mrs. Drake s Woodpecker. A Peek at our Week. Nursery have been very busy, the main highlights being baking hedgehog shaped bread rolls, finding out some facts about hedgehogs and joining Reception for a very windy walk around the grounds foraging for acorns, shiny conkers and different shaped leaves. Reception have been using their new numicon equipment to explore numbers and have been working hard on their phonics. They have also begun creating their own woodland den, collecting items from around the school grounds, to support their imaginative role play. Year 1 enjoyed a literacy lesson in the outdoor classroom looking for sticks and using their imaginations, based on our story 'Not a Stick'. Birthday Congratulations We have already celebrated our first birthdays of the year. Edward turned 3 on the first day of term, followed by Amelia turning 5 the next day and Sam 6 the day after. Finnan completed the list by turning 7 this week on Wednesday. Many Happy Returns to you all. A big thank you for Edward for the lovely Birthday Book Abracazebra! Year 2 have been eye witness's writing their own diary entry describing their experiences during the Great Fire of London. Some children have even had the chance writing with a quill. Years 1 and 2 had a very successful first hockey club using swimming woggles to help learn the basics. I hope you have a lovely weekend, Camilla Webster Head of Pre-Prep

From the Sports Desk.. Under 12A & 13B Boys Rugby Vs South Lee The opening training games of the season saw both the U12A and U13B rugby teams play South Lee. It was an opportunity for the boys to learn about their set positions and to show what they had learnt during the first few training sessions of the season. The U12A team moved the ball at pace in attack and found the gaps to score a number of well worked tries. The home team worked hard in defence and put pressure on the opposition throughout the game. The result was a well earnt 5-0 victory to OBH. The U13B also had a deserved win with plenty of good attacking play and great team spirit which enabled the boys to work together and win their game 3-1. Well done, to all the boys on a great start to the season. U10 Rugby v South Lee U10 A The U10A made a bright start to the season with a hardfought match against a talented South Lee side. Even though we went down 6-4, we produced plenty of attacking invention and certainly have plenty of potential to score tries as the season progresses. Charlie Harrison and Archie Miller made lots of darting runs and led the way in attack. The defence, however, certainly needs tightening, both at the breakdown and in the tackling department, and this will be our focus for next week. U10 B The U10B conjured a try-fest of attacking rugby, scoring 7 tries with some wonderful running and passing. Hugo Harrison, Ben Stokes and Alistair Ball all made excellent breaks and put themselves on the scoresheet. Unfortunately, in defence we struggled to contain their quick and strong runners and conceded 9 tries. Ben Stokes put in lots of brave tackles, but we left too many gaps for South Lee to exploit, and they took advantage. Plenty of positives, but more tackling needed!

Girls Hockey U13 v South Lee Won 5-2 The U13 girls kicked off their season with a win against South Lee on Wednesday. The afternoon was very much a training afternoon with the girls finding their feet after a lengthy summer break. We have had some productive training sessions leading into their first match, and the girls showed great spirit and tenacity to score some excellent goals. We still have plenty of work to do on the structure of the team, and there will no doubt be some movement between the teams throughout the season, but it was a very pleasing start to this years campaign. Well done, to the whole squad, and I look forward to some very close matches this term. U12 v South Lee On Wednesday the U12s started their season with a tough match against South Lee s U13s. It was a great way to start the season as they made quick progress throughout. The team became stronger, more organized and better at communicating as the match went on. They scored just before half time, which was followed by several opportunities including a penalty corner in the dying minutes of the game. The team should be proud of how they played and the promise they have shown for the season ahead. Girls Sport U11B v South Lee The opening match of the season was a training match against South Lee. We were greeted warmly by the opposition and the match started with pace from the offset. Nolly Mannion Miles, Jemima Banks and Tiara Phiri were on fire at the front and were charging the opposition s D with regular strikes. Our defence were just as busy at the other end. The first third, ended 0-0, and we opened the second third in disarray with the change of ends, but regained our composure to quickly score two awesome goals. At the start of the last third we made a few changes to our line -up and Jemima moved to centre back and Lucy Stanton came in as centre forward. We scored a further three goals to secure a victory for the first match of the season. Well done, girls, it was a sterling effort all round. U11A South Lee The girls were very excited for their first match of the term and they all did incredibly well. They were well prepared and had been training really hard. OBH started strongly and had the majority of the possession of the ball but unfortunately were unable to convert. The defence were superb, reading the ball well, and also supporting when OBH were on the attack. With new combinations, it will take a while to settle and we will be working in and around the attacking end to ensure we score some goals against what will be a strong Holmwood House next week. Well done girls, great attitude and work rate!

And finally It is always comforting once the first few days of the academic year are successfully negotiated and everyone gets back into the natural rhythm of the term. From a personal point of view it is great to be back in the lab and start teaching screaming jelly babies was yesterday s topic I would love to say no-one was hurt during the course of the lesson but I am afraid the jelly baby is not in a good state! (for those of you wondering, the sugar full jelly baby burning in oxygen rich decomposing potassium chlorate mirrors the process of respiration going on in every cell of the body). As I write this I am about to take six Year 7 children off to Uppingham for their entrance test. They are very positive and well prepared and we wish them all the very best of luck. At the other end of the journey is Lottie Rowland who won a scholarship to Downe House last year. Julia Campbell will be attending a dinner there tonight to celebrate her success. The House Debating Competition is now up and running with the first semi-final taking place next Saturday. Among the topics to be discussed are, whether the government should spend its money on alleviating British poverty rather than on foreign aid and whether or not voting should be limited to those who can prove they understand the relevant issues. It promises to be a lively term of debating! I hope all Prep School parents will be able to join us on Tuesday for our Syllabus Evening. It is always a useful event providing an insight into what your children will be learning over the next ten months and giving you an opportunity to ask staff questions. Finally, I would like to thank you for the many messages of support following our recent runners up spot in the Tatler Prep School of the Year awards. There is, and will always be, a great deal to be done to keep an OBH education amongst the very best in the country, but it is extremely rewarding that the hard work of all the staff has been recognised in this way. Enjoy the weekend and I look forward to seeing many of you on Tuesday evening. Tom O Sullivan Headmaster
