1 The Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC) was set up as a statutory body on 11 June 2001 by the Minister for Education and Science. Under the Qualifications (Education & Training) Act, 1999, FETAC now has responsibility for making awards previously made by NCVA. Module Descriptor Gaelic Football Level 4 D
2 1 Title Gaelic Football 2 Code D Level 4 4 Value 1 credit 5 Purpose This module aims to foster the interest of learners in Gaelic football and to provide a basic proficiency in and understanding of the sport. It provides an introduction to basic coaching skills applied to Gaelic football, and a general orientation to the National Coaching Development Programme (NCDP). This is an elective module for the Level 4 Certificate. Upon successful completion of the module learners will obtain the Introduction to Coaching in Gaelic football, as outlined in the National Coaching Development Programme. (Level 3 Award, G.A.A.). 6 Preferred Entry Level 7 Special Requirements Level 3 Certificate, Junior Certificate or equivalent. Providers Candidates The content and delivery methods of this module must comply with the criteria outlined in the G.A.A. Assessor s handbook. The module must be delivered by a recognised Level 3 Assessor and must have the approval of the coaching authorities in Croke Park. Evidence of this approval must be displayed using the approval form at the end of this module descriptor. Candidates must be 16 years or over on completion of the module. 1
3 8 General Aims 9 Units Candidates who successfully complete this module will: 8.1 explain what is happening during a game/event in which s/he is participating or observing 8.2 examine sports coaching and his/her own suitability for the coaching task 8.3 assist in basic planning, managing and instruction of young people in some of the skills of Gaelic football, taking account of enjoyment and safety factors 8.4 display the basic coaching skills (communication, demonstration, observation/analysis, providing feedback) in the coaching of Gaelic football. Specific Learning Outcomes are grouped as three units: 1 The Sport 2 The Participant 3 The Coach 10 Specific Learning Outcomes Unit 1 The Sport The learner should be able to: 1.1 identify the basic skills (technical, tactical and team play) of Gaelic football 1.2 explain the sequential development involved in acquiring the basic skills 1.3 explain the fundamental rules of Gaelic football 1.4 conduct introductory activities to develop basic technical, tactical and team play skills in Gaelic football 1.5 explain the importance of technical proficiency, tactical awareness and team play 1.6 identify the contact mechanisms within Cumann Luthchleas Gael for further development as a coach 1.7 plan, organise and assist in the delivery of enjoyable coaching sessions which concentrate on the development of playing technique, tactical awareness and team-play. 2
4 Unit 2 The Participant The learner should be able to: 2.1 outline basic human growth and development as it applies to participation in Gaelic football 2.2 list the dangers of early specialisation and an over-emphasis on winning in Gaelic football 2.3 explain the importance of promoting positive and enjoyable experiences for participants in Gaelic football 2.4 state the reasons why people take part in Gaelic football 2.5 explain the function of warm-up and cool-down 2.6 demonstrate a warm-up and cool-down 2.7 outline a basic skill development framework and apply it to Gaelic football 2.8 conduct a session using a basic skill development model. Unit 3 The Coach The learner should be able to: 3.1 plan, conduct and evaluate a basic coaching session 3.2 outline the role of the coach 3.3 display the role of communication in the coaching process 3.4 outline the National Coaching Development Programme 3.5 outline the need to integrate participants with a disability into activities 3.6 apply the basic principles of instruction and demonstration 3.7 list the major issues relating to first aid and safety 3.8 outline the components of a first aid emergency plan. 3
5 11 Assessment 11.1 Technique Practical Coaching Practical Coaching: 55% Logbook: 25% Oral Examination: 20% Mode Centre-based with external moderation by FETAC. Weighting 55% 11.2 Technique Logbook Candidates plan and deliver part of a coaching session, duration approximately 20 minutes. The practical coaching requirement will allow the learners to demonstrate an ability to work with participants at the Introduction to Coaching Level. Performance Criteria are indicated on Individual Candidate ing Sheet 1. Candidates must achieve a minimum of 50% in Practical Coaching in order to gain a pass in the module. Mode Centre-based with external moderation by FETAC. Weighting 25% Candidates keep a record of assisting at six coaching sessions. The completed log-book will allow the student to display the skills of planning, record-keeping and self-evaluation associated with coaching and to develop confidence in conducting coaching sessions. Performance Criteria are indicated on Individual Candidate ing Sheet Technique Oral Examination Mode Centre based with external moderation by FETAC Weighting 20% Format An oral question and answer session will be carried out by the assessor before, during or after the practical examination, as appropriate (see Individual Candidate ing Sheet 3). 4

10 EVIDENCE OF APPROVAL CUMANN LUTHCHLEAS ngael GAELIC FOOTBALL (D10141) A special requirement of this module is that the provider must secure the approval of Cumann Luthchleas ngael. To apply for approval complete the form below and send it to Cumann Luthchleas ngael. Once approved Cumann Luthchleas ngael will return a signed copy to you. The signed copy should be held in the centre as evidence of approval and should be available for FETAC External Authenticator. This process must take place in conjunction with the normal FETAC application procedure. This form is evidence that Cumann Luthchleas ngael has approved this centre to run the module Gaelic Football (D10141).
