Perry finished the night with 85 yards on 16 carries Burlington pulled away in the second half By Sam Roach The King s Knights dropped their opening game of the 2016 season 38-7 last Friday night at Burlington Edison High School. The Knights defense started strong forcing Burlington to punt after three plays on their first series. Taking over on their own 33 it took the Knight s just three plays to get in the end zone. Facing a first and ten on their own 47, junior quarterback Brennon Blevins, throwing his first varsity pass in his career, hit Jack Van Dyke in the flat. Van Dyke eluded three defenders on his way to a fifty three yard touchdown scamper. Van Dyke added the PAT to give King s a 7-0 lead. Burlington tied the score on their next drive on a four yard run by Hunter Anderson. The game was closer than the score would indicate as several Burlington drives were extended by several King s penalties and often times just one missed assignment on a play. Offensively the Knights produced 260 yards of total offense. The leading rusher for the Knights was senior Caleb Perry who gained 84 yards on sixteen carries. In addition, Perry recovered one fumble from his safety position. The leading receiver for the Knights was Van Dyke who gained 62 yards on two receptions and one touchdown. Defensively, the Knights limited Burlington Edison to 334 yards of total offense and 160 rushing yards. Leading King s defensively was senior linebacker Jordan Burtt with eight tackles, junior Johnathan Chen, making his first career varsity start with five tackles and Perry, Atley Shapiro, Jerad Stretton and Jesse Hibbard all with four tackles. In addition, junior Taylor Schoenfeld recorded two quarterback sacks. King s next game will be this Friday night at six o clock against Lakeside of the Metro League at Ingraham High School. Lakeside is coming off of a 38-0 season opening victory over Selah. Because of the Labor Day weekend, the Junior Varsity Knights did not play this week. The J.V. Knights will open play Monday, September 12th against Bellevue Christian. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30.

Inside the Huddle: Friday night featured new faces By Sam Roach In the thirty some years that I have been coaching there s one thing about high school football that I especially enjoy and that s at the beginning of each season how many players get their chance to either start or just play meaningful minutes in a varsity game for the first time. This was definitely the case last Friday night for the King s Knights. When Coach Jim Shapiro announced his offensive and defensive starters, the lists contained the names of five players who had never started in a varsity football in their lives. Two of those players, senior Jesse Hibbard and junior Chase Root, started on both sides of the ball and the other three players, juniors Brennan Blevins, Johnathan Chen, and sophomore Jakob Renneke, were one way starters. Renneke, incidentally, had been injured all of last season and was unable to play at all. In his first high school game ever, he was the starting defensive end going up against an experienced Burlington team. An offensive line by the way, that was quoted in the papers as having one of their goals to be the bullies of the interior line in the Northwest Conference. His previous game was a junior high school game two years prior against either Sultan or Langley. Welcome to the show Renneke. In addition to these guys there were two other starters Friday night, Cole Critchlow and Luke Wicks who had less than three starts on last year s senior heavy team. Wicks had started against Cedarcrest and Critchlow had started against Granite Falls and Archbishop Murphy. Then there were the nonstarters who logged in significant minutes on Friday night for the first time. Senior linemen Riley O Neil and Alex Garrett both played in the first half when the outcome of the game was still very much in question. One hundred and fifty pound junior Logan Perrigo, performed admirably both at defensive end and running back. Another junior, Jace Fransen, was on the receiving end of a 25 yard Blevin s pass that kept a drive alive in the third quarter. So where is all of this going? Even though it was September, one thing about the game last Friday night was that it was a game that had many elements of a playoff game in November. For example, I was the last person out of the locker room before the game and I followed Burlington onto the field. On the way to the field they did something that struck me as interesting. There s this brass bell mounted in concrete on the courtyard that I suspect has been there for years and many players as they passed by, made a conscious decision to touch the bell almost as if they were making a connection with past Burlington teams. That s a tradition of a playoff caliber program and make no mistake about it, Burlington is a playoff bound team. Here s the point. Last Friday night a young King s Knights team went toe to toe with a much more experienced Burlington team and played with them. They left no doubt that this is a King s Knights team that will only get better. It will be a team that will eliminate the mistakes it made last week. This is a team that by week four will have combined the new players with the experienced players who played key roles in the playoff run in 2015 and will be poised to make another one. This is a team that will not rebuild, it s going to reload.
