1 Sedgefield Sports News In what has been another fantastic year of achievements for all our Team Sedgefield performers, I would like to take this opportunity to share some of our highlights. Football Another successful year for SSC s football teams. One league title and two cup victories help to demonstrate the talent of the students at our school. Year7 completed a very successful first season together with only two defeats, ending the season in third place in the Bishop Auckland Schools Football association league. Year 8 have developed into a strong team during the season and finished third with only two defeats. Students also reached the final of the league cup but were narrowly defeated. Year 9 Ended the season in second place with only a narrow defeat in the game against the league leaders preventing them from becoming champions. The Year 9 team also reached both league and Bishops Cup finals, with a convincing win at Heritage Park, Bishop Auckland. Year 10/11 were also crowned champions of the twelve school strong league. They also won the league cup competition. Nicole Scott, Emma Lumsdon, Jessica Wetherspoon, Maddie Hand and my Elliott were all nominated for both ladies district and county teams. Bobby Gray, Harry Petterson, Cameron France-Mulcaster & Sam Hayes were all selected to represent the bishop Auckland district teams. A great achievement for all the students who were selected for the twelve school strong league. Netball The year 7 team performed very well in their first season together and with more learning taking place throughout the year in PE lessons, they should have a excellent one next year. The Year 8 team had a very successful season. Only one defeat in seven has seen the team finish in the top three of the league. The Year 9 team demonstrated excellent improvements from last year whilst the Year 11 team competed on over 5 games throughout the season showing great commitment during their examination year.

2 Athletics On the track our Yr7 and Yr8 athletics teams performed very strongly in the South West Durham Championship with our Yr8 boys winning the Championship and the Yr7 boys and Yr8 girls finishing 2nd. Special mention to Ellie Spinks (Y8) who competed in this years Durham County School U14 Pentathlon. In cross country we had some very strong performances in the South West Durham Championship. Most noticeably our Yr8 girls team who became areas champions. Also, Sean McKay, Anya Carter, Abbie Walker, Ellie Spink, Amy Graham, Sophie Glaister, Maddie Hand, Harry Pearn, George Wilkinson, Sam Morrison, Ellie Graham and Lucy Walker all finished in the top 16 and represented South West Durham in the County Championship. Special mention to George Wilkinson who finished 15th in the North of England Inter County event at Barnard Castle School. Swimming At the National Schools Swimming Championships William Baines (Y8) took home four medals including two gold medals in 200m butterfly and 400m Freestyle. Cricket Our inter cricket teams have had very strong seasons with both our boys and girls reaching County Finals. The year 7/8 girls team won the South Durham Ladies Taverners area competition and went on to finish 3rd in the County indoor finals.

3 The girls were also silver medallists in the Chance to compete county finals. Consistently strong performances from all the girls, with special mention to Jessica Weatherspoon and Emma Dickerson. In our county hardball competitions both our u13 and u15 teams finished their campaigns in the 2nd round. Mountain Biking A strong Y8 team were overall winners in our SSP competition sending them into the Durham Schools Games finals where they went on to be crowned champions of County Durham later in the term. Basketball All of the year 7, 8, 9 and 10 teams competed in a variety of competitions including SSP and school games qualifiers all demonstrating great progress year on year highlighting the excellent learning during physical education lessons. Trampolining Back in November our Trampoline squads competed in the North East Regional Schools Championship. The year 8 boys team took home a gold medal and qualified for the Northern Championships in Huddersfield. Bradley Bartlett was awarded an individual second place. Emily Marsden was also awarded second place individually and was part of the y7/8 girls team who finished with a bronze. Well done to all those involved, dedicating time and effort into perfecting their routines.

4 Table Tennis In table tennis both our U13 and U15 mixed teams won there way through to the Durham County School games finals. Well done both teams. Secondary Olympics The large end of year schools event is the culmination of various sports fixtures we have competed and won during the SSP calendar. As a school Sedgefield finished 2nd Overall in the daylong event held at Oakleaf Sports complex. Results on the day included first places in both mountain Biking and Dance and second place finishes in Football, Rounders, Table Tennis and Athletics. We also had students competing in Wheelchair Basketball and Boccia. Other sporting initiatives for In September we launched a very successful coaching programme in partnership with Hartlepool College. This include experienced coaches working with our students in Rugby, Basketball, Football and Netball. This is something we will be looking to further develop into next year. We also relaunched our National School Sports week programme. This year it included a range of off site visits. A very successful week for the PE department saw over 75 students experience five separate sporting experiences after school including skiing, karting, horse riding, Lasar tag and rock climbing.

5 Leadership Our Yr9 Leadership Academy have continually demonstrated exceptional qualities as they support the delivery of Primary school PE the area. This has included support at basketball, multiskills, OAA and Primary Olympic festivals. Well done and thankyou to all those who form the academy. It is fantastic to reflect on and acknowledge another great year. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank those staff who not only give up their time to run fixtures and events after school but also commit significant amounts of time and effort in preparing for each fixture ensuring that pupil experiences are as positive as they can be. Thank you, Mrs Hepples, Mr Baird, Mr Bennett, Mrs Wilson and Mr Peachey for all you time and dedication.
