1 San Mateo Ave MILDURA MilduraPrimarySchool OSHC The last few weeks have been a busy time around the school. The grade 5/6 sporting teams have represented the school well at each of their interschool sport competition. They have shown great sportsperson ship towards all umpires and the students they have played against. I had great pleasure in taking the Student Leadership Team to the GRIP Conferences last week. The students were with other student leaders from many different schools from Mildura and the wider district. The aim of the day was to build up ours students understanding of what it is to be a leader. On reflection of the day students were thinking about: Their strengths and weaknesses, How important it is to focus on the strengths of others We do not need to have a badge to be a leader Leaders can be anywhere, and Being a leader means to show we are responsible at all times In the coming weeks we have more wonderful learning opportunities planned throughout the school. I wish the school choirs and verse choir all the best as they compete in the Mildura Eisteddfod. Starting with the 3/4 Choir on Thursday 1 st June. The Preps are planning for their massive Prep market on Thursday 22 nd June There will be a Pupil Free day on Friday 23 rd June so that staff can attend professional learning at Mungo National Park. We will be celebrating NAIDOC week on the last week of term. Fidget Spinners The fidget spinner craze has come to Mildura Primary School. Unfortunately, the Fidget Spinners have become more of a distraction to students than to help with concentration. I have asked class teachers to collect the Fidget Spinners during class time because students are distracting others by showing each other what they can do with the spinners. In addition, we are having incidents in the playground where the spinners are getting broken or students are arguing over who owns which spinner. In order to ensure that students are focussed on their learning I am asking students to leave their fidget spinner at home or the teachers can collect them each morning and give them out at the end of the day. For students who need to have a fidget toy we have a supply of fidget toys at school that are designed to help with concentration. School Webpage and Child Safe Policy New items will be added to the school webpage over the coming weeks. Please take the time to have a look and see what is changing. The School Child Safe Policy and Code of Conduct will be added shortly. We have a commitment to ensure students who attend Mildura Primary School are in a safe environment and we can help them to feel safe where ever they are. David Midgley NAIDOC NAIDOC stands for National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee. It is a time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements and is an opportunity to recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to our country and our society. Our school will be celebrating NAIDOC Week from the 26 th of June to 30 th of June. Parents and Carers are invited to attend the celebrations. Monday 26 th of June Special morning assembly at 9.00 am with a Welcome to Country, a smoking ceremony and the raising of the flag. Thursday 29 th students will be performing a whole school dance followed by buddy activities in the classrooms. Students will also have the opportunity to sample kangaroo rissoles and Johnny Cakes.. There will be camp oven tastings for parents and carers at am. 4 Boys Football On Friday 12 th May, our Boys football team travelled to Ranfurly PS to play Interschool sport. With quite a few of our team missing, we played with 16 players. At the first ruck contest we won the ball out of the middle, gave off a few handballs, kicked the ball into our forward line which resulted in us scoring a goal straight away. The boys dominated the first quarter largely on the fantastic ruck work from Taniela. The second quarter was a lot more even, however for the a majority of the quarter the ball remained locked in forward half with the boys rushing their kicks which resulted in many points being scored. In the last quarter the game was played mainly between the 50 s as both backlines defended well. Final scores were 8 goals 5 points, 53 points to 0 goals, 1 point. A great team effort by the whole team. Girls Football In beautiful weather on Thursday 4 th May, our girls footy team played against Ranfurly and Mildura South at Number 3 oval. In the first game we competed against Ranfurly PS. The final scores were 36 to 0. The team displayed great willingness to tackle and included each other by handballing to each other. Our second game was against Mildura South PS. In a very tight game the girls lost 25 points to 27 points despite having 3 more scoring shots. The girls displayed great sportsmanship when competing and great commitment and listening skills while training. Cross Country Well done to Flynn, Shahr Banu and Xavier for being great representatives for Mildura Primary School while competing at the 2017 Division Cross Country. Flynn finished 49 th, Shahr Banu finished 43 rd and Xavier finished in an excellent 7 th position. All three students ran a great race and ran to the best of their ability. As Xavier finished in the top 12, he now gets to compete at St Arnaud on Tuesday 6 th June. All the best Xavier! Girls Netball First game was against Ranfurly, Girls netball A team won, scores were 20 to 7, B Team lost 7 to 20. The Girls played well as a team and need to work on running to the ball. Second Game played against Mildura South, A team lost 24 to 4, B team lost 27 to 1. The girls tried their best against strong teams, they need to work on getting in front of their players. Third Game played against Mildura West, A team lost 23 to 15, B team lost 31 to 9. The girls played well, but slowed down in the 4 th quarter. They need to work on their passing and defending. Soccer On the 26 th of May we went to Mildura West Primary School to play interschool soccer. We played with three less players but with great determination and good coaching, we won 2-0. Aryan and Yuthi scored our two goals. Jemus and Mitch were great in defense. Our best players were Aryan and Belal. We will find out in the next few weeks if we made the finals.
