1 Week ending 20 Nov 2015 Week ending 8 Nov 2013 From Claire Lilley - Head of the Junior School claire.lilley@sidcot.org.uk A great time was had by all last Friday for Children in Need Day. The Junior School raised A big thank you to Sharn Salmon for providing the breaktime hotdogs; they were much appreciated. On Tuesday I joined J6 on their trip to Weymouth on the Evacuee Experience. The children have spent several weeks learning about the events around WW2, making gas mask boxes, planning their outfits and making identity cards and labels. They all looked fabulous as we set off into the blustery unknown! On Wednesday our Year 5 & 6 pupils took part in the interhouse Spelling Bee. One pupil from each House and each year group took to the stage, alongside older pupils, to face the challenge! They did a fantastic job and the audience were very encouraging and supportive of their efforts. Well done! Celebration Assembly Being celebrated this week are: William Boreham-Wilson, Kate Milne, Sophia Radford, Joseph Sandiford, Joe O Neil, Mia Petrie, Bethan Kolind and Luke Jowett. Well done everyone! We also celebrated Luke Jowett s excellent swimming achievement, having swum 80 lengths and raised 600 for Somerset Time For Youth - Well done Luke! The House point cup was awarded to East House. Well done everyone in East!

2 Travelling Book Fair November 2015 We have great pleasure in inviting you to attend our Travelling Book Fair. The Book Fair will be in the Junior School from 20 November to 25 November All the commission earned from this fair will be taken in class reading books. We do appreciate your support for this event and as a result receive many up to date reading materials for our pupils. Should you wish to purchase a book for your child, the book should be taken from the bookcase and the details recorded on the sign up sheets. You will find these on top of the bookcases. The cost will be added to your end of term school fee invoice in the usual way. If titles run out during the book fair, Carolyn Parker, Secretary, can order extra copies for you. School Photographs Colourbox Photograph orders were sent home this week. We hope you were pleased with your photographs. If you have not received your order please do not hesitate to let the School office know. Christmas Post Box The post box will be put out in the Junior School Entrance Hall from 1 December 2015 for pupils and staff who want to send internal cards. Our very own postmen/ladies from J6 will deliver them to each class. Please ensure that the child s name (including surname) and class are clearly marked on the envelope.. PTA Second-hand Uniform Sale, Friday 4 December 2015 The Junior School PTA will be holding a second-hand uniform stall between 8.45 am am on Friday 4 December 2015 in the Hub, Senior School. Should you have any unwanted uniform which you would like to donate, please leave this in the Junior or Senior School Receptions and Chantelle Parker-Mills, PTA Chair, will collect this. The PTA will sort the uniform to decide whether it is suitable to sale. The proceeds of the sale will go to the School PTA funds and this will, in turn, benefit the pupils. Please could donations be washed and put in a bag marked for the attention of Chantelle Parker-Mills. The PTA will be selling both Junior and Senior School uniform. All monies taken will go to the PTA. If parents require payment for unwanted uniform, they should sell these privately. May I thank you in advance of all donations. From Chantelle Parker-Mills, Junior School PTA

3 U11 Netball v Fairfield - Monday 16 November from Mary Dowds, PE Faculty All the U11 s who were available, played in a match v Fairfield on Monday. To ensure that all girls participated, we played on two courts with 5-a-side games. One court played traditional 5-a-side rules and the other court had a more free for all approach so that movement and shooting could be practised by everyone. All the girls participated enthusiastically and showed great improvements since their last fixture against Fairfield earlier this term. There was far more movement into space on both courts and ball handling was sharper. Fairfield had some strong defenders, so Sidcot had to work hard to keep possession. The Yellow team had a fairly even game. The first half score was 2-2, with Sidcot creating a lot of space but taking too long to pass the ball, so then losing the advantage. In the second half they were a lot sharper and linked together well. The attack of Stella, Sophie and Athina passed quickly and accurately, giving Sidcot numerous chances to shoot, many of which were successful. Meanwhile the defence of Claudia, Lily and Elsa worked hard to intercept the Fairfield attack and often caused them to make errors which the girls then capitalised on. Final score was Sidcot 8-4 Fairfield Player of the Match: Sophie Lee The Green team, at times, showed great timing in their movements and passed the ball quickly down the court. Sadly they were often stopped from having a chance to shoot by a very quick and springy defender. They worked hard to keep possession and were very focused. Ava, Emily and Jess linked some great passes together and it was a pity they often lost possession in the attacking D. Final score Sidcot 0-3 Fairfield Player of the Match Emily Hawkins The Blue team worked hard to create some attack but often found it difficult to find the space away from the Fairfield players. They restricted Fairfield s movements on many occasions but couldn t quite stop them scoring. They now need to be a little quicker and more decisive when wanting the ball. Final score: Sidcot 0-3 Fairfield Player of the Match Eva Fawcett Credit should go to the following girls ; Elsa Cardale, Athina Michael-Carpenter, Lily Adam and Eva Fawcett for showing great sportsmanship by playing for the opposition and being determined in their roles.

4 Class Focus - J5 Sevington Victorian Trip As part of their work on the Victorians, J5 visited Sevington Victorian School on Thursday 12 November. It was a fantastic day which was both thoroughly enjoyable and incredibly authentic. Being dressed in Victorian costume, the children and staff stayed in role for the whole day and truly experienced what it would have been like to be a Victorian school child. Below are a few descriptions written by the children... This term our topic is The Victorians so on Thursday 12th November J5 travelled back in time to 1897 to find out what a Victorian school was like. I felt scared that they might be strict and that I might get the cane! When we got there, we had to line up straight boys on one side and girls on the other. Girls had to keep their heads held up high and boys had to keep their feet close to the curb. By Christopher French. As I got on the minibus I sat with mixed emotions. I felt nervous because I knew they were going to be strict but I was also really excited because I knew it was going to be really fun being a Victorian child for one day. During the journey we were all laughing at our Victorian names mine was Maggie, Emily Hawkins was Florence, Emily McGurl was Mary and Eva was Lily! By Honey Hann
