01 Kings Stables The Kings Horses were stabled here at a time when crossing the river was a hazardous task and The King was carried over by his men.
02 The Cock Pit The Cock Pit is the oldest property in Eton, once used for cock fighting. The Victorian post box is nearby. Eton was the first village in Britain with a post office.
03 The Porny School Porny's charity school was founded by Antoine Pyron du Martré, otherwise Mark Anthony Porny, French master at Eton and afterwards one of the Military Knights of Windsor, who, by his will proved in the P.C.C. 12 May 1802, bequeathed his clear residuary estate.
04 Baldwin s Bridge The Baldwin's Bridge estate was acquired originally under Letters Patent granted by Queen Elizabeth, bearing date 13 March 1592, for the repairs of the bridge called Baldwin's otherwise Barnes Pool Bridge, and otherwise for the benefit of the parishioners, and comprised in an indenture of feoffment 10 August 1787.
05 Eton College and Chapel In 1440 Henry VI chose Eton as the site of his foundation for 'twenty-five poor and indigent scholars. The parish became at once a centre of activity, the building of the new college affecting the whole neighbourhood.
06 The Eton Wall Game Viewed from The Timbrall s, over the road is where the Eton wall game is played on a strip of ground 5 metres wide and 110 metres long (The Furrow) next to a slightly curved brick wall erected in Matches are played on St Andrew s Day, as the Collegers (King s Scholars) take on the Oppidans (the rest of the school). DRAFT
07 The Edge The Edge II bronze sculpture of a naked man can be found in Common Lane look up high for this! The sculpture was produced by British artist Antony Gormley who is best known for Britain s largest sculpture situated near Gateshead called The Angel of the North.
08 The Burning Bush The wrought iron lamp post is by Henry Woodyer, an old Etonian, famous also for New Schools, behind the Cannon in Cannon Yard.
09 John Keate The longest-serving and arguably the most remarkable Head Master in Eton s history is Dr Keate ( ). He has the reputation of being the greatest flogging Head Master, the symbol of unreformed Eton, and a figure of fun.
10 Natural History Museum More than 16,000 specimens and displays are housed at the museum, exploring themes including Thames Valley wildlife, biodiversity, evolution, and ecology. DRAFT
11 Museum of Antiquities Eton has educated 19 Prime Ministers, many members of The Royal Family, several notable writers, scientists, artists, actors and 37 former pupils have received the Victoria Cross, more than any other school. DRAFT
12 Christopher Inn The original inn was frequently leased to the college, but in 1845, it was acquired from the Crown by the and the then head master strongly urged that no lease of it should be made, inasmuch as the inn was the cause of much evil and temptation among the boys. It was given up to one of the masters, the condition being made that the tenant must accommodate a certain number of king's scholars in the event of plague breaking out in the college. Traces of the old building are still to be seen. DRAFT
13 St John s Church The church of St John The Evangelist is a building of stone in early 14th-century style, and consists of a chancel with an aisle, a nave with aisles and north and east porches, and a tower at the east end with a spire; it was built in The east window was inserted as a memorial to the Prince Consort in 1865.
14 Jubilee Square Designed by Ron Lewandowski and next to the Baldwin s Institute it was unveiled by Lord Waldegrave and commemorates both the Queen s Diamond Jubilee and the 100 th birthday of the Baldwin Institute.
15 The Brocas Fair In 1450 The King granted the provost the right to hold two fairs in Eton to accommodate those bought in to work in the town to support the school. One for three days following Ash Wednesday, the other for the six working days following the feast of the Assumption. A fair still happens annually on the land owned once by John Brocas, surveyor of works in Windsor Castle in the 14th century.
16 The Boatsheds Eton College Boathouse was built in the early 18th century. The River Thames is used by many rowing clubs including those attached to schools. Boat houses are common along the river banks. Eton proudly hosted the Olympic rowing in 2012
